There are 2 types of beginner plant people: Me- been dabbling in plants my whole life but decides to get serious about the hobby and only buys the most beginner plants and still lost tons during my first winter. My Brother: Has never had a plant, decides he wants a plant, buys a super rare hybrid anthurium.... it literally thrives and now he's cross pollinating and growing bonsai trees like a pro while i argue with my adansonii

I got my McDowell 7 months ago in the US from a well known plant shop. The roots had started rotting just prior to shipping so they offered me half my money back if I still wanted the plant. They are so hard to find in the US that I took it anyway. Well, I totally saved Dean and now he is the most gorgeous big boy! Absolutely love and highly recommend this wonderful Philo!!!

Actually it’s called Philodendron Dean McDowell, in memory of a very good friend of the person who crossed two species and produced this hybrid. I think that should be mentioned, cause he said it’s important for him to tell the whole name of the plant ☺️

Even though I'm not a fan of crawlers I would like to get a Dean McDowell someday because of this information. I heard it was named after the hybridizer's friend who died of AIDS. I don't know if Dean McDowell is queer or not but given the horrible history of ADS and the lives that it took, I feel like it's all the more important to remember those people like Dean who must've meant so much to John Banta (the hybridizer).

This is a fantastic series and I'm so glad you are tackling it. I'm not a beginner per se, but I do proceed with extreme caution when I decide to spend my money on plants. I got into plants in 2019 after suffering through my 3rd miscarriage. The plants really helped with the healing process and I went from zero plants and thinking I had a black thumb, to 65 indoor plants, plus a massive outdoor food and flower garden. Turns out I have quite the understanding of the needs and wants of most plants (except pothos, honestly they hate me). Despite my experience, I still hesitate before purchasing a plant because I don't want to throw my money out of the window. I always find these lists helpful, but when you do them you always provide an angle I don't often see in other similar themed videos. Helps me feel like I'm making a more informed purchase.

Yes, please do an anthurium one next! In terms of philo, I stay away from verrucosum at all costs haha, even though all the different forms are so pretty! But literally, any change in conditions and they kick up a fuss straight away. Some other philos I've found easy are gigas (definitely over juvenile melano) and ushanum which grows like a weed and seems to thrive on neglect haha

Absolutely stunned to hear your take on domesticum variegata. I took two cuttings from mine and put them in Sphagnum moss. They had long and strong roots in less than two weeks. The butt cut of the plant is also pushing out new growth from two different areas. However, I got my plant for an absolute bargain because the seller thought it was reverting and wasn’t sure if cutting it back would bring back the variegation. Time will tell.

I love that the Pink Princess & Verrucosum were both part of the "wrong for you" category. I'm over a year into my plant mama life and I'm only now considering a Pink Princess because I know I'll have the patience and additional knowledge I need to care for it. The Verrucosum is a different story. I got one when I was only just getting on a roll plant-wise because I thought the leaves were gorgeous. What a mistake. It has lost all it's leaves twice since I got it and the 2 it has now are small and dinky. I was definitely not prepared to care for it. Even now I have huge confidence issues taking care of it cause I'm always second guessing myself. ai-ai-ai.

Hee Kaylee, I've been a fan of your video's for quite some time. You bring information that is sometimes difficult to find ! I'm sending a message with a plea for the Ph. Erubescens (pink princess). I think this plant is even stunning without it's pink variegation. The leaf shape on bigger leaves, with the clear red edge and the way the new leaves come in all burgundy before turning green is just stunning to me, as are the deep reddish brown stems. I also like that it grows architecturaly without looking leggy. The fact that it's not a cultivar, that erubescens is found in the wild with and without the variegation is nice too I think. With this plant I consider the variegation as a surprise, sth that will happen (if you have a plant with variegation to start from, that is) only you don't know when. It can get obsessive the variegation seeking, to the point where it's no longer healthy for the plants.

I own a verucosum, (one with red under the leaves) climbing issue was solved by tying it to the pole with soft elastics. Never had any pest issue yet -it's been year-. It seems to be affected by excessive airflow tough. But I really don't regret having one .

Yaaaassss I need an anthurium guide next! A local small shop is special ordering me a forgetti and I cannot wait!!! It will be the longest month (she acclimates responsibly before selling) ever waiting for her to be in my home.

Oh my god, the funny thing is that when you were talking about how awful these Phil. Verrucosums are, I got a notifications on a verrucosum for sale😂😂 Guess what I did? Checked verrucosum off of my wishlist😁

Just let it acclimate, please do not report it right away. It might die if you do. Just leaf it alone, give it high humidity and airflow and let it dry out inbetween watering. Mosspole helps. I also wouldnt propagate it without airlayering.

@@sinas.5910 yes I completely agree with everything you said they are a pain in the ASS unless in perfect conditions. I know people who have collected for years that can’t even care for this plant, that’s why I never bought one! Lol. Good luck my dear, just make sure you give it the exact conditions so you don’t lose her because they are gorgeous! 💕

@@knitwit2871 Yes, it is such a Diva, so easy to rott. If something is off, it rots and dies. I have to repot mine soon, so pray for me 🤣. But I am happy to start seeing aerial roots starting on the moss pole.🙏🏼

This video came out just in time. I have been wanting a Philodendron Verrucosum, but have been debating since I've researched that it can be a fussy boy and I am in Canada which means dry AF winters so I will be skipping this plant but it is by far my favorite plant in terms of looks. It's so unique and beautiful, just so unfortunate it's a pain in the butt to upkeep. In the end, I purchased a Philodendron Melano x Verru since I saw in your previous video that the hybrid is easier to take care of. Wish me luck!!

So many people warned me about verrucosum. I still got it though and I had no pests with it for the year I had it. It grows super fast and is actually one of my easiest plants. I don’t know 🤷‍♀️

@Drew Pettis I think they are pretty much impossible to root, if they don't have any aerial roots, only with airlayering.

Loved this video. I don’t think I ever heard you speak of the Thai Sunrise. I have one and noticed recently that I’m getting mote lime leaves than variegated. Now I know why. Also, anyone in the comment section that has any recommendations on my melanochrysum, I’d love feedback. It is TEENY TINY and I have it now in a terrarium on a pole in 98% humidity and still nothing!
