These look beautiful You reminded me that I needed to work on my plants. I use clay. I’m sure it’s more strenuous on my body. Your plants look very healthy growing in plastic. And the added ventilation in the plastic pot is helpful for ventilation. I might consider changing over to plastic. You have a double green thumb. I talk to my plants too. They appreciate the love. @@ronjakh How does a non porous matter retain anything well. I am looking at Melissa’s plants. They grow beautifully using her method. My opinions are from whatever research and many years of attending classes at The Indoor Gardening Society of New York. They do have chapters throughout the US. Please understand my comment was conversational not confrontational. My other concern is that the plant will topple over being top heavy and planted in a light plastic pot. I’m going to try her method and mine. I think I honestly love the beauty of terra cotta. And I ask for help when I need to move things. When I first started making structures for composting outdoors I used the coated metal. It looks just as difficult to work with as the plastic. I like the way Melissa works and her choices for securing her plants. Plants need to breathe just like human bodies. They require water. And they should sweat and release fluid. I appreciate your opinions.

Just subbed, really love your content so far. Your plant chores were spot on. So much seems personal preference and “by my experience” which makes it so much more accessible (at least to me). One can know the science and “rules” for what can and will work, but per household there can be so many variables. This one was a gorgeous video, I live very far North and its finally warming up now so I’m itching for an adansonii to ship soon. Watching this helped the itch and you’ve made me so excited =) Keep up the work, looking forward to binge watching some more tomorrow.

When i chop & extend a plant, i cut it the day before. This allows the cut to dry. It's not super important, but it can prevent rot.🌱

Watching you do the chop and extend, I was thinking- since you use a support stick in back, maybe don’t bother taking out the moss and just sit the pole on top of the substrate? You can zip tie the support stick to the inside of the pot for security and the pole to the stick. I would think the roots would find ground since you have the long one growing? I’m doing a chop and extend in a couple months, so it’s very interesting seeing the process. I love the giant adansonii leaves. Nice job!

The stake adds a little support but it stands up without it. The base in the soil really needs secured well so it doesn’t fall over. Wet moss plus the bigger leaves makes the pole somewhat top heavy. I have the base sitting in a heavier ceramic for added support too but I don’t see sitting the pole on top the soil working but haven’t tried it :)

I use chopstick to push the moss out from the bottom. It makes it super easy.

I think you’re removing coco husks rather than coco coir. The husks are gritty bark like stuff. The v coir is like soil and retains moisture. I don’t believe the husks retain water like the coir does. If you’re removing chunky things than it’s coco husks. Like the covering on a coconut.

@@plantsbymelissa You have and I've watched them all but it looks like a piece of cake when you do it. I end up spending a lot of time trying to get soil to stay in the moss pole and getting it to stand up straight. I use 1/2" pvc pipes with holes drilled in them for self watering and it just seems like it takes me all day to do a 2' pole. I'm switching over to the metal poles with no pvc.

But i'm wondering how often you have to water these moss poles when grown like this? And what do you feed your plants with because obviously the growing medium wouldn't have much nutrients in it? Hi, I'm going to link my moss pole playlist here for you. I have several more videos on them. I water mine twice a week and I only use a slow release fertilizer in the soil. I've used slow release for about a year now and I feel like my moss poles are getting enough nutrients. Subscribed....Very informative video. I purchased an Adansonii about a year ago which is now about 2 feet tall with many vines which is ready for a moss pole for the Chop and Extend process. Its in a 7 inch pot with 4 individual plants in it so its pretty bushy looking. I'm thinking of repotting it by splitting it into 2 six inch pots ( 2 or maybe 3 plants per pot) with chop and extend poles. How many plants per pot would you recommend? Thanks for the great video!

Yay thank you!! I’m glad it was helpful! I love hearing that 🤗 I would say 3 is a good number for adansonii. You can add more to fill in the pole as it grows but sometimes it gets a little crowded or by the time you chop not all of the vines catch up and you’re left with just a couple and one vine tends to grow first for most of my poles. Also, when you have a couple vines growing you really appreciate each new leaf that grows. It’s definitely personal preference and what you find you like over time 🥰

Sure! I used to use plastic bags all the time to increase humidity as a little makeshift greenhouse. you have to be careful of leaves touching the bag though or they can rot from the moisture inside.
