Fern My moss poles are like your wire ones but 5-6 feet tall and I take a 1/2” PVC pipe and drill 6-8 tiny holes in the pipe and then put my moss on the wire around the pole. Then I water down the pole. When we went on a cruise last summer I was gone 10 days with my poles out in the Texas summer heat and they did amazing. The pipes slowly release the water through the holes for about 10-12 days saving me having to water as much. I teach moss pole making with this technique. Best wishes. 💚💚💚

A fun project is to actually find a nice tree branch outside, around 60cm or higher, a bit sturdy and just take it home, bleach clean it and add wood varnish and then top it off with high-gloss wood lacquer. And use that bad boy as a pole for your plants. The more wonky the more fun way for plants to grow!

We go hiking and find cool branches that have fallen on the ground or when we’re chopping up our overgrown wisteria. I find the ones with a lot of bends and twists. I plant it to the base of my climbers and use that for stability. I like my plants to look as natural as possible. I don’t think I can achieve that with moss poles of any kind. Thanks, Fern for saying that we can do whatever we want. I love your openness, perspective, and your insight on your personal journey. Say your truth, girl! I’m subscribing right now after this one video. Keep up the great work!❤

I gave up on moss poles pretty early on. Where I am it's just too expensive to get the moss and the maintenance/maintenance costs was just too much for me. I know I would probably get more benefits growth wise but it's just not feasible for me. Now I just use dead,gnarly and twisty branches that I sand down smooth(or leave as is). It just gives this really natural/organic look, like my plants are just growing up a tree/across a branch. I'd love to get some terrarium decor like hollowed out tree trunks and such aswell at some point for them to climb on. These are good options imo if you use stakes and don't want just a straight stick.

I use the wire mesh poles but slide a 3”x36”plastic strip of translucent, heavy duty, ribbed drawer liner down the inside back and then add moss. Also I leave out 2” of moss at the top and drop in a clear plastic Solo cup with 2 tiny holes in the bottom. I just fill it up and it slowly drains into the pole. Super easy😊

I just found precut wire poles on amazon. I ordered a pack of 6 with some moss to give this a try. I didn't have much money to buy a roll of hardware cloth when I first started so I used Jeff's advice and used planks. But then I didn't have any wood and it was really expensive at that time, nor did I have any of my kids beds to take apart, LOL. But I did have left over recycled barn wood from a shelving project I did a few years ago and used them!! I loved the look but I am not having much success getting the plants to actually climb them.

I water my moss poles every 1.5-2 weeks, but I do a thorough drenching at the kitchen sink. I also let them dry out a little bit more. Haven't had any issues so far. 🤞 I probably am trading off optimal growth speed with my lazier watering schedule, but I found moss poles way more doable that way. Also, big advocate for closed backs too! So much easier!
@thecrazyplantenby
@thecrazyplantenby 6 ай бұрын
I'd only be concerned your roots might get dry rot if its getting “crunchy”.. My humidity is fairly high so mine don't dry out too quickly.. I've seen people do a self watering type thing and they put a bottle on top with small holes and that's probably perfect fit a lazier approach too but they'd stay moist for you!

I wish I saw this video sooner!! I spent hours hydrating and fluffing "premium" moss I got off Amazon for my first moss poles only to find it has a funky smell. (It was the Legigo brand if anyone's wondering, and their coco coir also has an unbearable chemical smell, so I would not at all recommend that brand!) I want to set my plants up for success, so I'm definitely going to use your recommendations instead. Thanks for the great info! Hi Fern I’d love to get your advice…I decided to dip my toe into the moss pole world by experimenting with some small offshoots from my monstera deliciousa and planted 3 of them. I made my own plastic back and wire front moss pole and attached the rooted cuttings and their aerial root nubs have grown into the pole. The weird thing is that one of those thick roots has grown upward and is now sticking out of the moss but the vines have not reached that height yet. Should I continue to fill the pole to cover that root or let it be an upward aerial root? And will other smaller type roots develop from those vines and root into the pole? Thank you for your help with this. 20:20

good point - no, I don't think these square ones are bamboo. they have never rotted on me! I've had this one in my tortum for a couple of years now.

I just changed a bunch of baby philodendrons to moss poles, but I'm finding they look sad and droopy. I'm worried I'm overwatering? Is that a common problem? What's the rules to follow when you first transfer the baby plants to a big moss pole. They look so tiny next to it!

I have a Monstera Adansonii that I bought that was put on a plank, but has outgrown the plank and I tried to put a moss pole attached to the plank but now I think I have to repot it. What’s your suggestion should I just carefully remove the mature part of the plant that’s attached with staples to the plank and just create a new moss pole in a bigger pot when I repotpot it, this will be my first time doing this, any suggestions

Hi Fern I noticed you didn’t speak on one pole you used to talk about. Trofolia I think is the brand. What do you think of those now?

I don’t currently have any of them in use, but I think they’re great and super handy if you don’t plan on doing chop & extend! You can’t really remove the roots off of them so they don’t work well for propagating.

How tall do you let the clear plastic poles become before chopping?

Moss is hard to get where i live, even if i order it online. How about filling the pole with soil mixed with perlite or vermiculate? do the roots know any difference, or is this not done mostly because of the extra weight?

I haven’t tried it but you can! I’ve seen other people experiment with different mediums on their channels, so try to search up some videos to find a good alternative :) good luck!

Hi Fern, when you do a chop and extend when you put the top half in another pot, will it ever grow roots into the pot or only in the poll thanks
@wildfern
@wildfern 6 ай бұрын
Yep, it will definitely root into the pot!

OK, thanks so much. I just wasn’t sure how deep to put the stem into the pot that I’ve cut. Thanks.
