one of the best things my horticulture TA told us was to do essentially this and just mix our own soils. she said “soils can be expensive and you don’t always know exactly how they’re made up. just buy the main parts in bulk and mix how you need it”

In my opinion it looked like she used an 8 quart bag of cacti/succulent mix, then maybe 4-5 cups of pumice, 2-3 cups orchid bark, a couple handfuls of mosquito bits, 2cups of coco choir, and 2 cups of perlite. But I'm totally guessing!

@amberfrazier575
@amberfrazier575 7 ай бұрын
It’s too compact and thick, you will most likely not have success with any plants if you just take any dirt out of the bag such as miracle, Gro, all purpose, potting mix and plant in just that. You will almost always need to add at minimum perlite and Coco core. Besides, maybe some worm castings, and orchid bark for drainage and plant health what she recommends is a great mix for an area like the Pacific Northwest. Your location matters. If you live somewhere in Arizona, Texas or Southern California, you might want to add a little bit extra of Coco core or some Spagna Moss for added, moisture retention. I would recommend 3 part :black, gold, cactus and succulent mix, 2 part, all purpose, potting soil, 1 part pumice, hand full of worm, castings, and mosquito bits. If you are transplanting and removing all of the dirt from the roots, I would recommend a mychorzial fungi root dip /handful of Myco mixed into the soil to prevent shock and increase nutrient absorption on each and every single plant you ever transplant. It is also better to keep your plants in clear nursery pots and put them inside of your terra-cotta or decorative pots so you can always remove them and take a look at the roots and the water retention/absorption/drainage inside of the nursery pot. I would also like to add, flip the bag over and read the ingredients that the potting soil is made of from the back. Sometimes it is hard to find, but it will be there somewhere on the back near the bottom of the bag most likely I recommend the black gold, cactus and succulent, makes because it contains many of the items that she is mixing into her soil already you would just need to add some orchid, bark and mosquito bits.

Well you can grow plants in all perlite in the world of semi hydroponics! So there's nothing wrong with adding more. Measure with your heart! Just means you might need more nutrients long term is all. 😊

I actually switched in reverse - when I started, I would lightly till the mosquito bits into the top 1-2” of soil in each pot but almost immediately started to experience mold and unfortunately lost a few plants because I didn’t catch the mold issue quick enough. After that he’ll, I switched to doing the mosquito bit “tea” and find that it is even more effective in preventing those damn fungus gnats from trying to take over the world lol

Okay Y’all 😂. Here is the recipes. I know it’s hard to understand, but she is giving you two different types of soil mixes to use. First soil mix for Cacti & Succs: Use bag of soil that is branded for Cacti & Succulents, add in horticultural pumice as the amendment. Soil mix 2: Use bag of All Purpose Potting soil, Bag of Orchid Bark, Mosquito Bits (to help with fungus and gnat prevention), and perlite. Can also top soil with worm castings. :) There ya go folks lol 😂

The reason you’ll want to wear a mask when messing with pumice and perlite is that these minerals are felsic which are high in silica. The dust from these minerals are a mild risk to lungs having the chance of causing silicosis. If you breath enough of this dust over a decent amount of time, you can develop this lung disease.

@rebeccaherrera6006
@rebeccaherrera6006 2 жыл бұрын
You need to take it out of its pot and remove that soil. Like toss it. Wash the roots and cut away anything that has been infected , treat it with fungicide, and repot it in new soil. I would just water as usual but because the plant has gone into shock from the change, I would wait a couple of days before I water it just enough for the soil to be damp.
