I know this is not exactly the area it's meant to be used for but I wonder - considering it's Skinsafe technology - could the Manscaped Lawn Mower be used for people who keep their head shaved? I imagine it would be particularly handy when shaving the back of one's own head. 😁😁

Although this is true, the opposite also happens. Most of the current technology inventions that are now available for civilian use were, initially, technology us in the military in their first stages before becoming available for civilians, not to mention all the technological advancements that happened because of the military. As far as I know, the internet, that now everyone uses, was an invention for military purposes. Wireless communications technologies were also grewing rapidly because of the military, medicine too. I am not trying to justify anything, I am just stating that there are two sides on one coin.

There is another that is in the similar vein as the non-lethal lasers. An electrolaser, or Laser Induced Plasma Channel (LIPC) uses a laser to ionize the air, making it conductive, then dumping a ton of electricity through the plasma. Essentially creating a small, guided, lighting strike. Apparently there has been some success in the field

Plasma weapons in atmosphere is almost certainly a dead end research path. The exception is something that generates the plasma AT the target, instead of trying to project it to the target through air. The Geth shotgun in Mass Effect works like this; it fires electrically charged projectiles that shatter on impact and flash ionize the surrounding air into plasma to cause an explosion at the impact site, along with nasty electrical effects on target. It's probably the most realistic 'plasma' weapon in sci-fi. Another hybrid weapon not specifically mentioned in the video is the electrolaser, sometimes known as a plasma channel weapon. It uses a laser beam to create a conductive plasma between the weapon and the target, and then a massive electrical charge is launched down the beam. It's a lightning gun. The US Army was experimenting with the tech about a decade ago, but it didn't get much farther than zapping cars in a lab.

You can actually build one. All that is needed is some ion seed source such as a metal salt vapor from a flame and salt water mist, an excitation source to superheat it and ionize the air itself like a microwave magnetron. A magnetic field coil that makes the plasma spin to create a vortex (several yoke coils plus a home made gradiant coil) to confine and cause charge separation and finally an acoustic pulse generator to lob the plasma. It doesnt do much damage but can scorch and makes a rather loud bang when it hits something. 🤓

Actually, you can get a somewhat solidified plasma fuel blob from roofing silicone off accidentally hitting it with a welding arc, or even sometimes grinding-sparks. So adding a little core of aluminium/ thermite/ iron oxide to it, isn't hard. And you'll find you can both ignite and fire anything down the barrel of a gun you want, with pretty well known schemes to, even if you have to "pre-set" what it is essentially a high-temperature incendiary round, that will burn as it flies down the barrel. You could possibly even add rifling to it. But short range plasma "launchers" are pretty piss easy, even with low-end tech. They're just not very useful militarily. They do "incendiary round" work, with extremely obvious "wow, that's not stealthy" stuff, even if they can hit temps that can melt a tiny bit of steel. Kinda useful to know, but not that useful as a "Plasma Rifle". ((F'ing terrifying if you get hit by one. But, seriously, so is 5.56mm/ 7.68mm/ whatever ammunition. It's just another way to die, no better or worse than anything else, and at least you can shield against thermals and plasmas. Kinetics are hard too)). I mean, try and tell me the tiny copper jet from a Rufous 12.5mm/.50cal anti-material round isn't a "plasma round", or any anti-tank rocket isn't an "explosive plasma round", and I'd have to disagree. Shaped charge? Plasma round. Anti tank rocket/missile? Plasma round. Two-stage shaped charge? Plasma round with anti-defense-mode characteristics. Plasma rounds are here man. We *are* in the future.

the description of the effects of the device used in the MARAUDER experiment sounds a *lot* like the PPC (particle projection cannon) from Battletech - extreme mechanical and thermal shock along with an emp effect. The game doesn't include the EMP effect except as a very optional rule buried in an old, old sourcebook, but the way the weapon is described sounds like this MARAUDER experiment quite a bit. The 'Mechs and their various energy weapons are powered by fusion engines, so they have plenty of power on hand And by what Im assuming is sheer coincidence, the Marauder-class BattleMech carries between 2 and 5 of these weapons, depending on the variant and year!

Anything could be weaponized. But I'm not sure plasma weapons even functional would be thing. The spreading of a military tech often need a widespread use and mastery in civilian field before. Gun powder composition co evolved with chemical industry and fertilizer. Same for lazer weapons. They start to be a thing because laser are a decades old tech , with a very broad range of applications. The only exception I could think of is atomics bombs who were the first off the lab large scale application for nuclear energy. To get plasma weapons we need to have a valid market for plasma tech and funding improvement. And honestly even if it was the case a big tech breakthrough would be required for using gigawatt in plasma when you could more reliably and cheaply use this energy to throw a chunk of metal with forcefield or centrifugal energy.

Problems with plasma weapons ... First the gas pressure law would mean it would work like a flamethrower. Second back scattering from the atmosphere would give the user a lethal dose of radiation

i want to try this one. induce the laser with some plasma particles, put the plasma ring around the laser segregating the electro and proton into different outlets, shoot the laser, run an electric current through the beam.

Plasma is notably used today in EUV lithography. A CO2 laser is used to heat droplets of tin, which become plasma and emit EUV light. This is used in the mass production of advanced microchips. Chances are, you're reading this comment on a device whose manufacturing process involved plasma. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extreme_ultraviolet_lithography

I mean, they could be? As long as you don't roll a 1 on your hit dice and take 1 or more mortal wounds with no saves and lose your specialist weapon squad member because of it.

Not super relevant to the video, but there's also a fifth state of matter: Bose-Einstein Condensate, colloquially known as "ghost matter". Basically, get matter very, very cold (as in, just barely above absolute zero), and you start to see this weird new state of matter which behaves a bit like a liquid, and a bit like a gas, but seems to have the ability to "phase through" some solids as if they aren't there (hence the "ghost matter" moniker).

I like Simon because he is not close-minded on most subjects. When the greeks came with the idea of the smallest particule which is uncutable, and when the 1700's scientists use that term for what's known as atom, nobody could think of sub-atomic particules. And yet, here we are.

Let me get this straight. The US Department of Offence is giving the Marines plasma cannons? Even if it is just a non-lethal stunner, that scares me more than if it was a lethal plasma weapon given to the Navy, Air Force, or Army.

Let me get this straight... there is a Russian missile that has a freakin plasma deflector sheild that absorbs radar? This takes my mind straight back to the Philadelphia experiment. If a plasma field can absorb radar then it is a small step from being properly attenuated to absorb other radiation frequencies such as light. Perhaps time and space.

No you clearly don't understand what's being said lol. Anything going at that speed creates this plasma around the front of the missile due to heating up particles in the atmosphere. Every missile like this creates this plasma effect wtf you think is going on when space craft re enter our atmosphere from space missions lol like wtf this been a thing. And when meteors/asteroids enter the Earths atmosphere....same thing....this is about as long long long ago history as you can get with such a thing....ffs
