Plasma Cutting Body Panels - Tracked Amphibious Vehicle Build Ep. 15

In this tracked amphibious vehicle build episode I'm working on the sheet metal that gets welded to the tube frame I built a couple of episodes back. Plasma cutter gets worked harder and steel gets cut into smaller pieces. I haven't neglected the almighty and powerful angle grinder. It will remain my main tool for sure. But using more advanced technology is always a time saver. Join me on my metal fabrication adventures and please consider subscribing for more. Cheers!

I would plumb the grease fittings to a centralized easy to access lube point (like they are on large construction machinery) another option you may want to consider is making one of the panels removable where it bolts on and can be resealed with a dab of rtv silicone it looks like the bigger top panel would be ideal for that It would allow service and repair of that entire spindle and driveshaft easy access to the grease fitting etc.

@J.C. Kohle yes then it'll last longer and repairs wouldn't get put off until something catastrophic happens (like bearings welding themselves solid and welding themselves to the axle stub shafts too (happened on a skid steer loader that an operator decided to neglect greasing and checking chaincase oil unfortunately I was the mechanic there to fix it that day... it sucked I ended up having to replace the entire spindle mount assembly (which was seized in from all the heat from the bearing welding (aluminum spindle housing) + steel (bolts, bearings, and shaft) + high heat (from the bearings and shaft welding solid)= a very angry mechanic with a cutting torch)

I worked with an older guy building a twin engine 6 seat executive aircraft, from scratch for Ted Smith Aircraft in southern calif. back in the early 60s. Joe Wojic was his name. The plans for the aircraft had been reduced to dozens of working blue prints. But joe and I were tasked with building the air frame jigs which had to be mathematically perfect. In all dimensions. Joe used a surveying instrument to begin the jig construction. The work took months. Much like Donn DIY amphibious project , each piece was hand made by Joe and myself. I learned more valuable techniques in the two years I worked with Joe than the rest of my aircraft mechanic career which spanned 25 full time years in the aircraft building business. You talents are equal to Joe Wojic . You are a master at a very young age. I was first learning the things you know almost by intuition. I am now 77

Like the addition of the wrench holder. Simple stuff like that makes me smile, as simplicity and ease of maintenance should be more commonplace in any piece of machinery. Well done.

One thing that you might consider is track flex. I don't know what you are going to use for tracks or maybe just tires. If you are using tracks, as you catch the edge of your track on a big rock or log, your track will flex and bounce. First away from your body panel and then into your body panel. The wider the track the more flex will show up. Adding a plastic roller to this area will greatly help from gouging into your body panels. Our snowcat has tracks that are five feet wide and has plastic rollers on the axle housings. This helps somewhat when we are going down a road that has been plowed out to 8 to 10 feet wide (wide enough for log trucks), but our tracks are 12.5 feet wide. As we try to blade the road out to fit our tracks, the center will be soft and the tracks will flex lower towards the center of the vehicle. This condition will cause the tracks to dig into the axle housings at the front and rear. It bends up our cleat backers and bolts on the edge of the inside of the track. It's even harder on the machine if you run over a log that is between your drive wheels and the frame causing the track to rub and gouge into the body on the underside of the body. Now, we don't take our cat across water, but your machine is supposed to float and you will want to protect those exposed panels especially if you run over a log in the water. A gouge could sink it in less than a minute.

I went to the pick and pull here in new york state today. You would find so much to reuse in your projects. That is where I picked up electric power steering from a saturn vue to use on my 1950 tractor. I had to plow snow once already and it is a joy to use with 66 yr old shoulders!
