Plasmatics

3 жыл бұрын

'The Damned' is featured on the Plasmatics’s third studio album, Coup D´Etat (1982). The video shows Wendy in epic form driving a school bus loaded with explosives, crashing into two walls of TVs, climbing on to the roof and then jumping off right before the explosion. The video shoot had to be completed in one day, and no second take was possible. Always a danger freak, Wendy refused to stop the production even after seriously spraining her ankle. The video was a massive success despite MTV’s pushback with its legal department demanding the inclusion of a “warning” label at the beginning. Once again, Wendy Williams transcended the limits of what rockstars were doing at that time, whether male or female.
Recorded and produced by Scorpions´ producer Dieter Dierks, the album was critically acclaimed and considered “the best slice of unrelenting heavy metal since the last AC/DC album.” (LA Times)
“Wendy Williams is doing vocally what nobody since Janis Joplin has done” (Aberdeen Press)
“Williams makes Ann Wilson or Pat Benatar sound like Judy Collins” (LA Times)

--- Lyrics --
Black visions from the satellite sky
Deaf ears hear not their cries
Fat jackals howl at the moon
Flies buzzing, playing death's tune
Night ends but the sun it don't rise
Tombs open and the dead they will rise
Black market buys your soul real cheap
No escaping, what you sow, you will reap
Prisoners of the damned
Find another land
Planet of the lost
Land of fire and frost
Prisoners of the dead
Fear the unknown dread
Tidal waves at sea
Set the serpents free
Coup d'etat on a global scale
Opposition, locked up in jail
Domination, the goons are the boss
Human race nailed to a cross
Prisoners of the damned
Find another land
Planet of the lost
Land of fire and frost
Prisoners of the dead
Fear the unknown dread
Tidal waves at sea
Set the serpents free
Prisoners of the damned
Find another land
Planet of the lost
Land of fire and frost

When I read or hear people say that Madonna and Lady GaGa are the real glass ceiling breakers in music I just laugh. I am so grateful that Wendy's words remain in this world, "Be true to yourself". Best advice ever, what sense is there working for what you don't believe in. If you don't have goals and work towards obtaining them, you're just being used to obtain the goals of another. Wendy represents to me what it is to be fearless and free. I wish she could have stayed around because she could've taught us so much, but I'm also relieved that she never had to see how much colder and more cruel this world has become. I love you Wendy!!!!!

I still remember watching this on a black and white TV in my room; Denver had a second PBS station start in the early 1980s and they produced a video show initially called 'FM TV' as they would simucast the audio on a local FM station. So, I first saw this video on a 12" black and white TV, with stereo audio nearly as clear as this video. They played videos MTV wouldn't touch. MTV also sent KBDI a cease and desist letter for the name FM TV; KBDI held a contest for a new name, and Teletunes was born. Anyhow, that was the only place that would play Plasmatics, Ramones, Skinny Puppy, X, and other stuff alien to the Top 40.

My family moved when I was fifteen from Philadelphia to a nice quiet little town in Maryland. Thankfully I was already into the Plasmatics, Motorhead and a few I can't remember. When this album came out, I thought my new friends could handle it. They couldn't A few guys who remember me from back in the early 80's like to remind me that I was always trying to turn them onto the Misfits 80 Miles might as well have been Mars

I first became aware of Wendy because of her acting, and then I heard her singing. Her end came too soon, but she looks like she is having fun in this video. You are not forgotten, Wendy O. Williams.

To me she's a nasty sociopath who belittles her fans but we as males might forget that Madonna had an enormous impact on women over 40. Cultural relevance undeniable, and La Isla Bonita , Justify My love and the whole album Ray of Light are pop gems . I am definitely not a fan , I can't stand the woman but credit is due

I like the over the top part of the music even when its metal but my favs r their punk tunes & performances. Glad they always stuck to their guns & followed their own vision, I respect their commitment as artists, but for my own selfish desire as a fan, I wish they had taken the Ramones path & never changed.

I think they were a small part of a large divergence in metal in the early 80s- subgenres popping up like crazy - Eddie left Motörhead by in large because what he thought was her Yoko-ing the band. I wish they could’ve made just a couple more of records like coup de etat I think she wanted to change the way women were viewed in the scene but they were sharpening their beaks to the breaking point and just chucking the whole candle in the fire rather than burning ends- twice as bright and half as long. I was crushed when I found out she was dead. I have her tattooed on my right shoulder. I wear a Mohawk today @ 37 because of her. I think even if they changed styles a third time it might’ve been awesome because of her. She was incredible. c'est la vie.
