Thanks for the demonstration. We had a painter over yesterday to look at our plaster, and number one, he’s telling us he doesn’t need to Prime our semigloss walls prior to painting. (1st. Red flag). Then he’s looking at some very thin cracks and telling us they’re always gonna show through and can’t be fixed. The cracks are smaller than 1/16”. (2nd. Red flag) Final straw was he said to just put caulk in the plaster where picture nails had made chips of plaster come out. I have a huge problem with people doing a half-ass job. I like things done correctly the first time and be done with it. Thank you very much for your time and walking us through the project step by step. It’s extremely valuable for me at this time. Going to Lowe’s this morning in hopes that they have all the materials listed. I’ve subscribed to the channel.

Your first mistake was trying to hire a painter to fix plaster they are all clueless on anything more than paint but he should have known to prime at least. In the uk they do use something that seems like a mix between caulk and mud to fix cracks so it can have room for expansion

I do it a little differently with mine. Typically, where there are cracks there's probably blown plaster from the lath with how old it tends to be, so in my house I drill holes along the cracks and squeeze in a bunch of construction adhesive, then screw with washers to get the plaster back to lath while the glue cures. Afterwards you just fill the holes and crack, which shouldn't need much raking out as the whole thing is now stabilised. I use Toupret TX110 for my filler as it dries fairly solid, enough to drill and screw, but still sands well and dries quick so you can get multiple coats done over an hour. Same process for ceilings but I bore the washers in a bit and leave them in for some mechanical security.
@gregkosinski2303
@gregkosinski2303 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah depends what you’re trying to repair. You have to push on the plaster to feel if it’s gotten unkeyed. If it is, it’s necessary to re-attack to the lathe. Oftentimes the cracks can form without the plaster actually coming away from the lath though.

Nice video, hits all the repair points. One thing I would add is to wet the area you are repairing before you apply the durabond, make it wet but then remove excess water so it is just damp. The dry plaster in the cracked area, if you don't wet it, will absorb the water out of the wet durabond your applying and dry it out faster than the rest of the repair durabond and could cause it to de-laminate from the surface or crack again later. You could use a bonding agent, plaster weld, sold specifically for plaster but old plasterers use to make a wetting agent from elmers glue, water, and plaster to make a watery slurry to paint on to the repair but I don't know the details on that.

Next I stick fiba mesh to the plaster. Mud all purpose with some glue added into the crack through the tape pressing hard. Last I tape it with fibafuse and sand/finish accordingly. Seems to work great. Anybody have any ideas where I could improve?

Do you always have to put tape over the mudded area and then apply more mud. This is my first time learning this technique in depth.
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
It depends. If you use mesh tape, just stick it to the wall first, then mud over it. If you use other types of joint tape, apply mud first, then the tape, then wipe it down fairly tight, like in this video- kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKXLhX2YjN18ldU But this was a deep crack so I filled it with hot mud first, then put the tape on top as it might have been hard to stick it to the raw plaster. Either works.

Hi, I'm new to your channel, I hope all is well! Thank you for sharing your professional work! I'd appreciate it if you provided your insight on the following questions: After properly fixing the crack in a lath and plaster wall, will the cracks come back again? If so, how soon or how frequently will the crack resurface? What causes the cracks and how can you avoid or slow the progression of occurrence of the cracks or are they inevitable? Would you recommend covering the plaster with drywall? This will be my first rental property so I would like to know the most cost efficient but also effective method of covering a fairly superficial crack. Thank you

Your cracks can come back if you only apply a thin skim coat and or your house starts shifting a bit. Some cracks will take awhile to develop again and others sooner rather then later. If you have a small real thin crack I'd make it a hair wider, fill it, tape it, and then mudd it. If you only skim coat a thin crack it will come back real soon. Adding texture to trouble areas (after fix) will allow you to add extra mudd and will cover blemishes that you otherwise would see. Hope that helps

Hello. The green label All purpose is very weak, as is the USG Plus 3. The strongest is to use a Fast setting mud like I showed in the video, with mesh tape, or fibafuse or paper tape if you are good at taping. If there is not crack, you could probably be fine with the Green label, but only if it needs a Very thin coat. Anything over 1/8" thick needs hot mud.

Can you still use the mesh tape on smooth walls that you will not be applying a texture to after? Would you just float it out? Thanks

Been a long time subscriber to your channel and I’m a little unsure about how to make this repair. I’ve removed veneer bricks from my kitchen wall and have gotten holes in the plaster. Do I need a bonding agent before I apply mudding compound and if so which brand do you recommend? Thank you so much for all your help!!
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 2 жыл бұрын
The only time I use a bonding agent is when I’m applying texture over vinyl over gypsum in manufactured homes. Otherwise, sand any surface that has any gloss to it, scrape off any bumps that are sticking out as best you can, and clean off any contaminants such as dust grease or oil. Otherwise, just fill the defects like normal and use hot mud on deep ones, regular mud on the rest. www.ThatKiltedGuy.com

Thanks for the video! Is it necessary to expose the plaster if the paint on top of it isn’t loose? I plan on using the same products as you
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
No you can just scuff up the paint with coarse grit sandpaper like 60-80 grit and that will give some thing for the mud to stick to.

Just came across your channel. Really appreciate all the great videos. I'm in the process of repairing plaster walls, some cracks and some larger areas that I have patched with drywall. I'm curious which would be better, the extra strength FibaTape that you used in this video or the FibaFuse tape that you tested in your other videos?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I think either will work great, although I think the extra strength is definitely stronger, especially in the inside angles.

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thanks for the reply. Know you're very busy. BTW, I gave the USAF 4 yrs about 600 moons ago repairing aircraft radios. Also, I have a bunch of hairline cracks in the plaster that I have gouged out with a v-groove so I can fill with hot mud. I don't want the cracks to come back so I am trying to decide whether to tape with the thinner perfect finish Fibatape. Love that kilt. My son used to be a big kilt guy.

@@david2go13 Thanks for the comment, and thanks for your service. I would prefer using the fibatape on those cracks myself.

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thanks. I'm actually trying to decide if I can just fill, sand and paint without taping. I can add a little glue to the hotmud to improve adhesion. If I decide to tape, I'll go with the Fibatape. Thanks for the suggestion.

There is a guy on KZbin that does a lot of repairs with no joint tape so it might work fine. I actually think it would as I’ve patched a fist size hole with nothing but hot mud in a test piece and it’s holding up great.

Just found your channel. Trying to do some plaster repair in my old house. This video will help. This question is off topic. Just wondering who is singing the "Waiting for a summer song " song that starts playing at about 16 3/4 minutes in the video. It is a nice song, Thanks for the tips and keep up the helpful videos.

What kind of paint would you use after the job? Is painting over plaster different than drywall?
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY
@ThatKiltedGuyDIY 3 жыл бұрын
I would use any good quality paint. Most of them work well if the technique is right. I prefer Sherwin Williams but that’s partly because they cater to professionals better and or better at color matching. just don’t put it on too thin, and two coats is better than one for sure, and always prime raw Drywall or at least put a third coat of paint on any repair.

@@NinjaFalllow so I went to Lowe’s and asked them. I ended up getting Kilz 1 primer and doing one layer and then Kilz 3 primer for layer two. Kilz 1 is way less expensive and soaked right into the plaster. So it was a perfect first layer. And then Kilz 3 was way better quality, but It went farther because I used the cheap primer 1st. We haven’t picked or put on a paint yet. But so far, it looks awesome and has good coverage.

Why do some people use tape to repair cracks of that size, but others like you don't use tape?

Shine think mesh tape isn’t any good, but I’ve used over 500 rolls to repair over 10,000 repairs with no problem. I use it because it’s faster.
