Jamie is the most generous teacher I’ve ever run across. If you ever get a chance to take a class from her at “Higher Fire Clayspace” in San Jose, CA don’t miss it! When I work with plaster I line a 5 gallon bucket with a plastic trash bag and fill that half full with water. That’s where I clean my gloved hands, my tools, and my measuring containers. If I’m sanding, I do that over the bucket as well. Odd as it may seem, the plaster will harden even under water so you can leave it to settle for a couple of days then pour off the water and put the hard plaster in the trash. I have a place to leave the bucket to sit so I use the same water and plastic liner over and over. I just keep refilling the water as it evaporates leaving the hardened plaster in the bottom of the bag.

Can’t wait to get my plaster and try this. I was using the back of a plaster mold to wedge very wet clay and some tiny pieces of plaster got in the clay! I was so upset but you just showed how I can still use it!! I’m so glad I can still use it for something.

Thank you! I'm just getting started with plaster casts using recycled gypsum from drywall (amazing source!) and your tip about the release agent was a lifesaver :D

You're great! You have such a awesome way of explaining to were people understand what you're doing step by step. I'm on my way at this moment I have my plaster and I'm going to start making molds.

Thank you for the video . where else do you use starch solution?
@jamiemeador2967 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. I really only use it for stamping as a release agent. Once in awhile I may use it on a plastic slump form.

Just superrrrrrrr, thanks a lot for your teaching us what We needed a lot. God bless you🙏❤️🌹👍

For the volume measurement you could simply pour the water into a measuring jug, then you dont even need to multiply. Or if you have a scale, you can weigt the plate before and after adding water and subtract. Each gram of water is 1ml

Have you ever tested the plaster for durability? Pressing extremely hard in the middle to see if it will break? Using a rubber mallet or hammer?
@jamiemeador29675 жыл бұрын
No, I have not. The only time I've had them break on me is when I've dropped them by accident. At one time I was considering how to make them thinner and stronger. Someone suggested adding a mesh. I have yet to try that.
@jennifereverett62985 жыл бұрын
You're using them to mold a softer material than I would. Soap has to be pretty hard to not squish out from under the pressure of a stamp. I fear pieces of the design breaking off into the soap as well as the stamp breaking under the pressure needed to get an impression.
@davezad2 жыл бұрын
@@jennifereverett6298 A better option for marking soaps would be a bisqued clay stamp. Pottery plaster is fairly strong, but you're right, it would probably deform after repeated uses.

maybe u can tell how hydrated (you want dehydrated) the plaster is by how well the water sucks it up.

I have just discovered your videos and think that they are great. Your explanations are clear and concise. Thanks very much. I have a question for you -- have you ever considered bisque ware in lieu of plaster? Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your video! it helped me a lot! btw what kind of ceramic did you use in the last video? Does it matter if I use any kind of clay on the mould?
@jamiemeador29674 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure which video you mean by "last". For this I used an "inbetween" clay from clay planet - an unknown mixture. For making pots I use sculpture Raku by clay planet or Laguna's bmix with grog. You can use any clay body with moulds. Happy clay-making and thanks for watching!

This is useful, but I wish that you had published the chart for when we have different cubic volumes than what you have done here.
@jamiemeador29677 жыл бұрын
I feel like the chart is not mine to share. It's something I figured out based on someone else's work. I can tell you the pounds of plaster is roughly 1.5 times the pounds of water.
@Catastrofius7 жыл бұрын
That is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
@paulsiwy60977 жыл бұрын
I use 5 parts plaster to 3 parts water and find it to be just the right consistency for pouring yet not having too much water. Also dry the forms slowly for maximum hardness.
@Fireguy977 жыл бұрын
When measuring the depth of the water in your plastic box, you have to make sure that table is level, as you mentioned right after you measured the water. Other wise you might be measuring the low or high side of the water depth, making your calculations incorrect.

Jamie, how do you store all your molds? Also, do you sell the molds you make in the 28 inch wok? I've searched online to no avail...
@jamiemeador29677 жыл бұрын
I store them in my studio usually stacked. I've sold at workshops. I don't anywhere else. I make that wok available during my workshops so students can make their own. It takes 33 lbs of plaster!
@cgriffisteach17 жыл бұрын
Jamie Meador I noticed Higher Fire has an online store that connects to Etsy. The plaster isn't as much an issue for me as the issue of buying two woks for the production of a mold. If you make them again could you please do a sale through the Etsy page? Thanks!
@crosen86 жыл бұрын
It may be simpler to find the volume by calculating how much water fit; each oz takes up 1.80469 cubic inches.

I get it from my local clay supplier and they refer to it as "in-between" clay. It's the change over clay. I don't know exactly what it is. It's from "Clay Planet" in Santa Clara, CA.

Why do you not just bisque the clay cutout of the oval and use that instead of making a plaster form?
@jamiemeador29677 жыл бұрын
Bisque would work. I like plaster because it keeps the size I want (do not have to account for shrinkage) plus no warping.

Either that or you can do like everyone else and mix it up like pancake batter make more than you'll need fill your molds dump the rest in the garbage because plaster is as cheap as air and save yourself a bunch of ridiculous calculations.
