Plaster Coving Installation - How To Cut A Stop End
This is the ninth video in a series of Quick Coving Tips that explain how to install plaster coving and plaster cornice.
A professional plaster coving installer explains how to cut a Stop End, which is a way of running coving neatly into the wall ahead of an obstacle. Sometimes when fitting cornice there are obstacles that can’t be covered for example where the landing ceiling runs into stairs. In such circumstances, it is traditional to place a decorative feature like a corbel ahead of the obstacle or finish the coving neatly with a stop end.
Step 1:
In essence, a stop end utilises the same technique as for cutting an external mitre and for a stop end two external mitres are required.
Step 2:
The first piece is cut and fixed on the wall so that the top edge of the mitre stops approximately 25mm from the obstacle.
Step 3:
The second mitre is then cut delicately so that the squared off mark on the wall edge of the cornice is little more than the thickness of the coving itself.
Step 4:
After cutting you are left with a small wedge of coving which will be used to cap the end of the first piece of coving, creating a small neat corner that gives the impression the cornice has ended.
Step 5:
The stop end is then stuck in place with adhesive and filled. Don’t fret if there are small chips in the stop end that you cut as these will all be covered during the filling stage.
