When the sun degrades plastic, they flake off into micro-plastics and blown all over including into drinking water and the sea. This is why recycled plastic isn't used for outdoor applications in the west. This will make plastic waste situation worse.

@@mychevysparkevdidntcatchfi1489 the plastic as paving is also not 100% exposed to sun light. I guess it's under 8%, depends on the thickness of the brick. If the bricks are then utilized as a building block, we can assume no surface will be exposed to sun light at all. It will act like tree which storing carbons into somewhere static, trees store carbons in their body, this mechanism store carbons in the building itself. I think it is still a great innovation. Imagine if someone could benefits from collecting plastic, make plastic wastes economic, then many companies of its kind will benefit while trying to solve our plastic problem. Making money is still strongest motivation to create movement ever.

My only concern is, what is rhe toxicity omissions of these plastics in building materials as i recall interlocking foam floor panels were at a point giving off toxic fumes that could cause cancer. This isn't to say this isn't a fantastic idea but even small particles inhaled have some risk to living beings and in places such as india have entrepreneurs exploiting the local workforce and putting them at huge risk. Thorough research needs to be carried to insure that these future projects are sustainable and safe.

That will eventually lead to micro-plastic problem, although here it's not that big of a scale. Just like in the oceans it falls apart and is consumed by fish along with plankton. The real solution is to replace plastic production industry completely with something eco-friendly. Like plastic bags that decompose. Even if you charge people 10 cent for each, they will just have no choice.

I am thinking large molds that can be filled to produce igloo or teepee style small homes, with floors and space for windows. The material lends itself to just about any kind of application, and it seems it would not degrade too soon. That would be important, as well as recycling the old material. Whatever is made, it's got to be better than plastic as far as the eye can see. It is appalling that no one seems to clean it up.

It is a terrible idea and should be immediately banned. Why? because as pavements and roads wear the plastic particles get washed off into streams, rivers and the oceans. They cannot be removed once in the water supply. Waste plastic can be removed from the environment simply by picking it up so it never poisons water supplies. Once collected, waste plastic can be turned back into drinking bottles or burnt as a fuel. It is very clean if you burn it at over 650 degrees. This is a far better use for waste plastic than making it into products that will gurantee that it ends up poisoning the water on the planet.

Possible, but you gotta also take into account that she created an extremely cost-effective way to create building materials that could be used in parts of Kenya that would definitely benefit from it. Sure you can't re-cycle them but it's still removing a lot of waste from the environment that would otherwise never be removed. I see it as a positive. With plastics and waste management there's never a full no-problems solution until we stop producing it.

@@ibejibenson1783 surely it's a debatable point. Ted Talks are great food for thought but never a complete or specific solution...u need to take it, add your situation and your creativity too to get a complete holistic solution Politics is the root of all corruption fur me...it's evil. Once you solve the technical problem "how to fix it" You end up having to solve the finance problem "how do we pay for it" Even when technical & finance problems are solved...politics always (99%) obstructs the solution (the people won't vote for me if i vote for an expensive or overly complex solution). Every problem in life boils down to politicians skewing or stopping the right thing to do. usually lobbyists involved paying politicians not to do the right thing as well as voter approval

Instead of releasing all of the gases over time, it will release them all at once. And it will do it in a way that you can actually see it. Thing is, the way they are doing it now, it is every bit as harmful as setting it on fire. Just that it will do the same damage over a longer period of time, and it will be invisible. But the effect is identical.
