Plastic Briggs & Stratton Cam shaft Exhaust lobe Issues• 🔧

Highlighting potential issues with a plastic cam shaft off of a Briggs & Stratton engine referring specifically to issues associated with the exhaust valve when running a machine at low RPM. This specific Cam can be found on both Quantum & Classic B&S engine types.

Starting compression bleeder: allows easier starting as it kicks the valve open slightly at starting RPM , then swings out of lifter range when running by centrifugal force. Only thing plastic cams are good for are using them as cores for lobe angle changes: cut the 2 lobes apart on the shaft, move them slightly for more or less overlap then drill and pin them to the metal shaft. Once you find the right lobe separation (longer or shorter overlap) find a custom cam that matches it in METAL!

There is a very good reason why car and motorcycle engines have camshafts made out of chromium steel, nickel chromium molybdenum steel, or cast iron.

Indeed they don't. The motor I just gt running from the scrapyard is more than 70 years old and will run for decades yet.
