I will show you how to easily fix a hole or crack in a plastic gas tank. This will work for lawn mowers, tractors, or any small engine machine that has a plastic gas tank. Thank you for watching.

Very smart man you are. Helped me fix 2 holes in my big Redmax 8500 blower fuel tank and boy am I glad because there's only one available on ebay and they want $70 for it. Thanks, sincerely and have a great day.

You're absolutely correct sir. The tank on my redmax blower didn't have any tabs with extra material to use for the repair so after melting the cracks together maybe I got the area a little too thin because overnight gas starting seeping through again. So I didn't give up and removed the tank from the blower, washed it out and off with soap and water and roughed the repaired areas down with sand paper. I then applied a big puddle of Krazy glue on both cracked areas and covered them with baking soda and the super glue instantly became as hard as a rock. I sanding a bit more to smooth out the dried hardened glued repaired areas, installed the tank back on the blower and filled the tank with gas. It's been sitting full of gas for 2 days now with no leaking so I believe the problem has been corrected now, thanks again.

Hey, that super glue and baking soda is a good trick. I will have to remember that one....Thanks.

I've done a similar fix in the past to save a plastic gas jug. I didn't think the same would work on this kind of plastic, which seems harder and more brittle, but it seems to have worked well. I'm going to try the same fix on my riding lawn mower tank. It should work, but I'm concerned the sub zero winter temperatures will cause the crack to reappear. Time will tell. Thanks for giving me the courage to try.

Good job on that, winter is tough on old plastic, I wish there was a pourable liner for proplyne plastic, someone could make it and have Phil McKraken advertise for it.

Thanks for taking the time to make the video. The only Thing I'd have done differently was to use Acetone to clean repair area and donor piece prior to repair.

A good idea with a crack is to drill a small hole at both ends of it to stop it creeping further and then use old plastic bottle, as a welding stick like you have done...

Thanks for the video. I have a coleman generator with 5 gallon plastic gas tank it has a SMALL leaks at the seam...So I cant fill it more than 1/2 full. I cant get a new tank as it's a discontinued generator. Is it ok to use it, since the tank is not fully sealed?..Is there a good way to seal the seam crack?...Thanks for any help.
@Buckwsr5 жыл бұрын
I don't think there is any problem with using the cracked tank, keeping the fuel level below the crack, of course. Fuel is probably just gravity fed to the carburetor, so it's not a pressurized tank. You could try to use the soldering iron to repair the crack at the seam. But if it doesn't work, perhaps you can design a way to mount a generic replacement tank in some fashion. Good luck.

Any thoughts on JB Weld epoxy?

jb weld will hold up well. have used it to reseal a shitty crapsman rebranded chainsaw. 👍

J b weld is great But it will not hold the plastic under the vibration

I have a backpack tank sprayer that had a hairline crack. I used 2 part epoxy. It doesn't leak now. Now I have a leaking lawnmower float. I can't find the leak & it's full of fuel. I'm gonna try drilling a very small hole to drain, then epoxy the hole. Then I will try submerging it & look for the bubble. Hopefully I'll find the leak & epoxy it too. If I had $10 I would just buy a new float.
@josephhaddakin70956 жыл бұрын
Update; after researching, I used a heat gun on low to piss out the gas. I then put it in hot water & found the VERY tiny hole. I'm going to do like you did & use a soldering gun on 15W.
@Buckwsr6 жыл бұрын
I admire your resourcefulness. I'd probably just replace the float... Thanks for watching and commenting.

Buckwsr lol, I'm broke till next month. The plastic was so thin that it melted thru very slighty. I used epoxy but it kept bubbling because of the warm air. I put a piece of blue tape over the repair. We'll see how that works.
@jimcoon58867 жыл бұрын
do you wash tank before heating???
@Buckwsr7 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea.,..get all the fuel out of it and rinse it out. Honestly, I can't remember if I did that.
@65csx834 жыл бұрын
@Dave Hanson It's not about residual fuel, it's about fuel residue contaminating the repair making it less likely to hold.

My brother patched 2 cracks im my dirtbikes gas tank a few years back and a year later it cracked. About a moth ago i got around to patching it again. And a few days back i descovered that it cracked again. What do i do. I cant buy a new gas tank cuz the bikes too old and now all of the modles of this bike are having the same problem or will have the same problem a few years down the road
@Buckwsr6 жыл бұрын
So are these new cracks appearing in new places, or the same old crack repair failing over and over again?
@chickensfloat74276 жыл бұрын
@@Buckwsr these are new cracks. I think what caused this recent crack through was the colder weather making the plastic shrink. but still the gas tank should not crack in a garage in 45 degree weather.
@chickensfloat74276 жыл бұрын
@@Buckwsr and the crack after the first 2 that my brother patched (the 3rd crack) formed while the tanks was sitting in my house where the temperature stays steady. Thankfully all the times this tank cracked it was empty or the fuel level was low. By the way this bike is from 1980 so it may just be time to have a tank welded up.

Good grief there's a lot of plastic tank repair seal kits that would do the job much easier and faster.
