One suggestion for amateurs: before backing out idle adjustment screw. Turn that idle screw in and count the turns; this way you know where to set it after reinstalling!
@drewthompson7457
@drewthompson7457 2 жыл бұрын
I count half turns, I find it easier. Also, I have had 3 carbs where the owner, or somebody, has turned the idle screw so hard so that the needle was broken off and jammed into the seat. Have you found any way to get the needle out? I haven't.
@davidbabcock1231

Okay I’m an idiot so please don’t take me for one. Wouldn’t you have to count the turns when your removing the idle adjustment screw from where it’s currently at so that when you screw it back in you put it in the exact spot?? Or am I way off??
@danoakley6538
@danoakley6538 2 жыл бұрын
That will work. Doing it the other means when you screw it back in, screw all the way until it stops then back it out however many times it takes to equal your first count before removing it completely.

You are a blessing to people sick and tired of throwing away perfectly good small engines and buying another one because they don't know how to fix the one they have, and it isn't worth paying someone to figure it out. My husband doesn’t believe in maintenance and he refuses to drain the gas before winter, needless to say the lawnmower wouldn’t start up this spring.🤔 Long story short, after watching your videos I had our lawnmower up and running within an hour and this morning I’m sitting on the deck with my cup of coffee watching my husband mow the lawn. 🥴🤣👏🏼

Tip for those who don't have a drill and want a quick fix for cleaning out that little jet hole: Find a piece of steel cable and break one individual wire off of the frayed end with a needle nose pliers, then use the needle nose pliers to grip the wire and push through the jet hole while twisting.

A few months ago I replaced the engine in my case 444 with a 13 hp predator engine. From the day I put this in the engine would surge, I figured it was in the carburetor and just purchased a new carb from amazon. Same thing, engine was surging. I watched this video and I thought that this couldnt be it because it surged with both carburetors. This surging was so frustrating that when I went out to plow snow the other day I figured what the hell I may as well check that jet in your video. Sure enough it was never opened from the factory. I have a small set of drills we use in the heating business to drill pilot orifices, so I found the proper size and opened the port which was never opened after being made. The engine runs beautiful now. Actually a pleasure to start and run. Thank you for the video.

OMG, I stumbled onto this video in the hopes of finding out how to clean a carburetor. My Kohler 7.3E marine generator has surged for years and after trying clean and even rebuild the carb to stop the surging, the only answer was to buy a new one. I've been through a few in the 900 hours I have on the generator. Well not any more. You're video helped me find that pilot jet and I never took that off because it had a screwed down clamp over the jet, which I took as a "do not touch". I did as you instructed and then fired up the generator and wow, no more surging, just purring like a kitten. I wish I could post my short video of her running, but I don't see that it's allowed. Many thanks Steve!!!!!

First of all, I really love your videos! I have watched so many already. I love how you explain things in great detail and thank you so much for zooming in the camera, so I can see exactly what you are talking about. That makes all the difference in understanding what you are talking about. You make everything seem so easy. I don't know anything at about small engines and now I know more than my husband does..lol. I have a Honda HRR2169VKA with Easy Start Auto Choke System GCV160 that wouldn't start, so I found your site and watched how to clean the carburetor. I cleaned it just as you instructed, but I couldn't remove the screw to clean out the pilot jet. I stripped it. I put everything back together and it still wouldn't start. I could see that the choke was open, so I found another video that said to check the thermo wax assembly and sure enough the pin was stuck in the out position and that's why the choke stayed open. When I pulled it out, I noticed this black tarry stuff stuck around it. I replaced it with a new one, but it doesn't fit tight like the one I pulled out. Do I need to clean out the hole that it sits in and put some RTV goop on the back of it to keep it tightly in place? I just put it in without any goop. Now when I pull it to start, the mower surges. If I let the motor shut off, I can't start it again right away. I have to wait a while for the thermo wax assembly pin to cool down enough for the pin to go back in, so the choke will close before I can try to start the mower again. Is that normal? Also, Should I take the carburetor apart again and try to remove the stripped screw to clean out the pilot jet? How do I get that screw out now that it's stripped? In case you were wondering, the mower has gas and oil and I tested the spark plug per your video. I don't want to give up. What should I do?

Steve - Great video, thank you. One thing to consider for newer mechanics. Before removing the idle screw, screw it in all the way counting turns to seat it. When you reinstall idle screw after clearing the pilot jet, reseat it and back out the # of turns from where you started. Easy and eliminates a variable for testing.

I'm now the proud owner of a set of micro drill bits and a can of carb cleaner, plus a mower running as sweet as a nut again. Steve you are a Godsend! I have spent 2 weeks and countless hours on the internet, (before i found you), trying to get my sisters 1 year old Husquavarna rototiller to stop surging. Hi Steve. That was very generous of you to share that fix. I have a Simson powered by Honda Pressure washer (From Costco) It had the surge problem from day one. Being a truck driver I had no time to return it to Costco. It was just a thorn in my eye. I watched your video today and went after it. I found the Philips screw head. Took it out reamed the hole and now she pers like a kitten. Thank you very much.

Thanks a million, Steve. I'm not an intuitive mechanic but I can follow directions. Your video gave me the confidence to tackle my log splitter that is run by a Wisconsin EY 27 W. I removed the carburetor, disassembled it and cleaned every jet and hole I could find. It now runs great with no surge. One question: I never did figure out how to set the fuel/mix screw but I'm not going to argue with the result. The hardest part of the job was reattaching the carburetor to the engine. It must take a special socket to reach back into a very tight space with the 10mm nut.
@jim1934
@jim1934 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Is it a straight shot to the nut? If not, can you get a wobble socket on it? If you don't already know, a wobble socket is a socket with a built in U-joint. The advantage of this socket over a socket and u-joint combination, is the shorter length.

WOW! Thank-you so much for posting this. My Honda mower started surging recently so I decided to try your trick. It worked perfectly. I had to take the carb off on my particular mower. My only problem was I was stupid and didn't take pictures or pay close enough attention to how it all was assembled. I finally figured it out. The most surprising thing was I discovered there was no air filter element in my mower. I bought it new at Home Depot and had never taken the air filter cover off. BTW, the Amazon link to the micro drill bit set is no longer valid but, if you search, you can still find the same kit.

Another true nugget from Steve’s SE Saloon! Story: Recently I executed a total cleaning of every nook, crevice and port (purchased and used the mini drill set) I could see along with new OM parts on my 1995 Walbro-LMT # 5-4993 Carburetor, my 15 hp Briggs developed the “death” surge😢. Back to Steve’s videos and I found the nugget solution🎉. Only had to remove the breather housing to get to the carb. There it was…The flat-headed Brass Pilot Screw. After removing and inspection, the “jet” port as well as the Pilot Screw end port was blocked. The correct size mini drill bit was the ticket to success. Put it all back together and Wow!!! It ran smooth as silk 😊 Thank You, Steve for always sharing your small engine “golden nuggets” which have been my inspiration in restoring my Dad’s 1995 JD Sabre 1546G!!! You sir, are a genius. My Toro SS 3225 has been surging for a couple of years and your video motivated me to find that illusive fuel jet and clear the hole which was plugged solid. Your solution worked flawlessly and I am so grateful. I would have had to have the mower picked/taken or have someone come to service it which would have costly. This took literally 10 minutes of which 8 were to find the jet! So thank you.

Great vid, thanks for keeping it simple (KISS) One note I would add is that a person can buy off the shelf from Lowes, Home Depot etc a welders torch tip cleaning set. This handy little tool is so invaluable for doing this type of work vs ordering and buying the drill type set you showcase. Handy little flip open set with all the sizes youll ever need and they stay attached to the case so you won't lose one. They're only a couple bucks.

Great video Steve, lots of good info here for those wondering why they are experiencing this issue, probably one of the most common and misunderstood small engine runablity issues. At the 6:05 mark in the video you mention removing the Phillips screw in order to gain access to the pilot jet. The small dot on the screw signifies that this in fact a JIS ( Japanese Industrial Standard) screw and not a Phillips. This not a criticism only a heads up for those that aren't aware. The confusion between the two has caused much grief because the geometries of the two cross head drivers and screws appear similar but in fact are totally different. Phillips drivers are designed to cam-out, JIS drivers are not. Using a Phillips in a tight JIS screw is an exercise doomed to failure. For those regularly working with Japanese JIS screws ( dimple on the screw head) do yourself a favor and purchase a set of JIS screwdrivers. Lots of good info out there on the subject, below is just a quick grab to get one started: www.motorcycle.com/ask-mo-anything/difference-between-japanese-jis-phillips.html Keep up the great videos Steve!

Thanks Steve. My new lawn mower started to actually sputter and stall and then I would start it and it would do the same all over, I have watched many of your videos but this on helped me to fix my mower. I originally was using regular gas but found out that I nee to use the higher grade. That's probably what caused the problem. I got some carb cleaner and couldn't find a set of wire files so I was told to use a set that cleans acetylene torches. Pulled of the carb and cleaned it up, and used the wire file to cleans the jet and the idler also . Now it runs perfectly. I didn't even have to open a beer LOL. Thanks again for explaining how to do it . You got my vote. John from Chatham Ontario

The final thing was that it was left surging and this did the trick. gcv135 engine with the in built pilot jet under the screw. Beware of people selling 0.3mm drill bits that aren't. Recently changed generator from a cheap Chinese one (lasted 5 years) to one based on a GX390. The geni is mostly used for heavy gear like the welders or compressor expect for times of miserable when I need the geni to boost the house batteries. We are having relentless rain ATM in AUS and the new geni really started playing up yesterday. This appears to have fixed it, one hour in and still good. Cheers mate, life saver 👍

Thanks a lot Steve, My Iseki lawnmower has a GVX160 engine. The engine was not running smoothly (was hunting), also black smoke came out of the exhaust and when hot there was sometimes a big plunk and fire coming out of the muffler. The first thing I checked was the air filter. The air filter was very dirty and clogged. I installed a new air filter, the big plunks and the fire were gone but the engine was still hunting. I followed your instructions and removed the jet valve. The small hole was plugged, I took a wire from a wire brush and cleaned the hole. After that I cleaned with compressed air. I've put it back together and started the engine. The problem was solved, the engine was running smoothly.

Thanks for the great advice! at 4:22, cleaning out the pilot jet ... that's what worked for me on my Westinghouse portable generator. An important point that needs to be made, because I almost didn't do it right --- make sure it's a 0.013 inch drill bit, or thereabouts. Anything much larger may drill out the entire aperture. I made a note to myself and attached it to the generator as a reminder, because I need things like that.
