No extruding all pressure. Ball screw driven extruders are the newest goto with geared down motor drive for adding incredible amounts of torque. Clamping is then the issue. 😊

Firstly, I am not master in this field. However, what I see is the heater band wire directly connect to port 1 and 2 (~220V) of the PID controller. My concern is whether we get electrick shock when touching to the heater band during the operation (I mean when the heater bands getting hotter to reach the set temperature value) ???

I've got onr of those "drill press" stands.... they're not what I'd call "great" but they sort-of "do" for home use. I've been on the look-out for a reasonably priced injection moulding machine for ages.... this might be a good plan.
@chriswesley594

Hello again. Yes, they are cheap and not very rigid. The reason this model worked is that the frame doesn't have to be rigid. The piston alignment and the strength relies on the downward force from the lever being transmitted through the mould. The second reason I stopped making these is that people just wouldn't get this, despite clear instructions sent to them. Mine is still perfectly aligned after several years of use, but some customers got fded up that theirs went out of alignment and froze. I'd get them back to re-align them which is annoying. The new model will solve both problems. The cylinder doesn't need any boring, and the piston cannot move out of alignment. I won't say how those are accomplished but you might subscribe if you'd like to see a video when it's available.

There are many many uses for a machine like this. 3D printing is great - I ahve two printers - but they take a long time to print things and the finish isn't always what you might want. Moulding is lightening fast and dirt cheap. That's why it dominates the planet.

Permission to ask, I tried vertical injection molding with a manual lever using HDPE plastic, but when in the barrel the HDPE plastic melts unevenly, the bottom near the nozzel has melted while the top is still thickened, how do I make it liquid evenly for HDPE material?

what would be the melting temperature of the molten plastic? & are you using recycled plastic such as -HTPP used for 3d printers. will you be devising a machine that makes larger castings of objects. when I worked in a plastics factory we used polyprophelane beads in sacks for the plastic material
@chriswesley594
@chriswesley594 4 жыл бұрын
Nigel, the melting point of the molten plastic depends on the plastic you use, but 200 - 250C is usual. Yes, I use HDPE and PLA - and that PLA IS from failed 3D prints. I already have a larger machine but it is not for resale currently.

@@chriswesley594 gotcha. nah, i keep toying with the idea of a 3D printer, it appeals to me but the market is saturated with builders and rip off copiers (reverse engineers), injection moulding has more appeal due to its strength but its one of those things that interest me more in how it works rather than all the hassle of actually doing it. Reverse engineer?.... bit of an insult really, an engineer would know the heating capability of the 120W heating coils from the manufacturers, be able to apply the q = U A dT equation to find out the transfer rate, they would also have to know such things as the thermal conductivity of stainless steel. (16 - 24 W/(m K).... Like i said, just curious as its always interested the crap out of me :D

@chriswesley594

Depends on the mould Rodney. If the ways are wide and the part simple, mould heating is not necessary. As things get narrower, longer and more complex, injection gets harder and heating helps to keep plastic flowing until the mould is filled.

*i have many questions* Is there a reason why stainless steel is used - can it be aluminium or copper? To have more capacity, can the piston and barrel be made a larger diameter, rather than length? When injecting plastics of different color or plastic type, how is the funnel and barrel cleaned to avoid mixing of colors or plastic types? You mentioned in one of your videos that the mould could be made of plastic resin. Would the heat from the molten plastic deform a mould made of plastic? How much torque do you estimate that you are applying to the lever arm when filling the mould? :
@chriswesley594
@chriswesley594 7 жыл бұрын
Critical look - here are your answers. Both aluminium and copper oxidise - they tarnish. The oxide is then available to contaminate the melted plastic and the part you'remaking. I know that LNS technologies nickel plate their hot parts, but my concern there is that - when the plating's gone, the machine is open to oxidation (rust in that case). You can make the piston wider, but then the injection pressure for a given lever force is lower. It's a compromise point which you choose for the work you have in mind for the machine. The barrel is cleaned ("purged" as the industry calls it) by flushing it with something. You can buy purging compounds but I just push the new plastic in after the old and accept that I'll have to do it a few times before the old plastic is fully gone. No, the resin moulds don't melt. The injection force needed depends on the plastic being used, the temperature of the melt, and the mould, and the specific design of the mould. Long thin runs present a lot of resistance whereas short fat runs present a lot less. My GUESS is that the down force for a typical mould would be in the region of 30Kg at the lever handle.

Pretty clever. Liked the idea of using a resin to make the mold with. The Nazis did something like that with the gears for their planes? I think that it was. They mixed their phenolic resin with silica sand with a lost wax method. If memory is serving well enough, I think that the article that I read claimed that they might have gotten 80 or so gears from a resin/sand mold. All that they did after that was trim the new gear to speck with a file.

The element is about 120 watts. From cold, it takes about 5 minutes to heat the machine to working temperature. After that, from one shot to the next, you have to wait a couple of minutes to melt the new load of plastic. You can speed things up by lagging the injector barrel.

Anyway, I've been wanting to do this for a while. I can think of more than a few parts I'd like to mold rather than 3D print.

I am currently in Panama, so shipping is expensive / takes a long time, so I was wondering if I could get those ss parts machined here... Thanks so much, Nike

Hello Nike, and thanks for your comments. I do not provide plans, sorry. Postage to Panama is about £130. Do you mean you saw THIS model in a Discovery Centre? If so, please let me know where it is and if there is a website for it. Thanks Chris

Chris Wesley thx for the replay. Yeah I am pretty sure it was THIs exact drill press model. I was just looking for one the other day for a project I was working on, that’s why I remember it. www.discoverycenterpa.com/ I might order one of your machines and pick it up in Germany when I am home for xmas. How long does it take to ship to Germany? And how much is the shipping? Thx!

Mehrdad - the short answer is no - not yet. The current model is 1.2 cubic inches, whic is about 20 cubic centimeters. Plastic density is about 1g per cubic centimeter, so that's also about 20 grams.

Whats the cost of having a aluminum mold made ?
@chriswesley594
@chriswesley594 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on who is making it, whether it's aluminium or steel, and what the part is. If you outsource it, then unlikely less than several thousand pounds for an aluminium mould and far more for stainless steel. I make my own from aluminium or brass with the aid of my metal lathe. If you have a CNC router, you can make your own even easier. It's now possible to 3D print moulds, though I have no experience of that so far.

@chriswesley594 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Joshua, it is on EBay for £425 + £25 P&P. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201749893363. If you'd rather buy it privately, we can split the EBay fee I wouldn't have paid - so £425 all-in. The nearest thing sold commercially to this is LNS technologies' machine - currently on sale for $1,800. (techkits.com/products/model-150a/) Frankly - there's is a more professionally finished machine, but then they're a professional company. Mine does what theirs does, and it's solid stainless (there's was nickel plated last time I asked), and it's a third of the price.

Hi I have a new design that I would like to be able to injection mould at home, it has 7 parts and the volume of plastic would be around 950g. each part is no more than 200g do you or could you make something?
@chriswesley594
@chriswesley594 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam. The capacity limit on the 4a model - the successor to this machine (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qp-ZXoCdf5uijLc) - is 1.2 cubic inches. For a typical thermoplastic like HDPE this equates to a mass of 19 grams - so this machine is far too small for your needs. You need a machine with ten times this capacity. Making something would be possible but it would be a prototype and involve you in a lot of up-front investment.
@adampragnell2622
@adampragnell2622 6 жыл бұрын
after reading your comment I have decided to remodel a juicer into an injection molding machine, Im seeing alot of people designing benchtop injection molding machines but all have a low capicity 10-20g. I see no reason why bigger capcity is a problem with these set ups. you are really only limited to barrel size and shaft. I take it putting a number of shots into the same mold isn't feasible ? I guess you would get separation, could this be overcome by heating the mold?
@chriswesley594
@chriswesley594 6 жыл бұрын
Adam, multiple shots into one mould is not feasible, no. I've also seen a lot of other people making injection moulding machines. And whilst they man demonstrate the concept OK, they are not usually practical machines. Aluminium, for example, oxidises in air, and will deposit a powder into the body of your parts. There are problem with scaling up a small machine to make a big one. One is that plastic is a very poor conductor of heat and as you increase the barrel width you increase the time it takes to melt the load throughout its width. Commercial units get around this problem in a variety of ways. Another problem with increasing barrel diameter is that the injection pressure for any given handle force drops. (pressure is force divided by area). Of course all obstacles can be overcome - commercial machines, after all, DO exist. But it's not as easy as you may think. Have fun & good luck.

Hi Foxy, yes I do, but much of the cost and the work is in these stainless steel parts. You'd need three parts: 1. The barrel itself, with drilled tapped holes for the bottom support strut and thermocouple 2. The funnel ring, drilled and tapped for the top support strut 3. The piston, machined for a close fit in the barrel. Please write to me at chris@chriswesley.org for a price. Best Wishes, Chris
