Have you thought about instead of just threading it on, getting plastic into the threads etc, to use a 37 degree flare hydraulic fitting on the barrel nose instead? They are super common, cheap, and would make it much faster and easier to exchange mold/plug.

This is so cool! How does the heating work? Are those induction or thermal resistance elements? I have an unused log splitter just waiting to be misused! Do you have to use anything to keep the piston clean, like oil or silicone?
@PreciousPlasticMelbourne
@PreciousPlasticMelbourne 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers! These are band heaters which you can pickup online. These ones are “premium” and cost $60aud each. Might be overkill.. not sure. Once the plastic is heated it doesn’t stick to the steel piston. We Use LDPE & HDPE only so we’re dealing with low melting temps.

Good question. We use this technique when making thick parts to prevent sink marks, however it's not necessary for all moulds. We actually found that filling the hopper and letting the rod fill the barrel after each shot actually works well for smaller parts. Having said that, it's difficult to monitor if the mould is full.

Although precious plastic is a great idea the inefficiencies of these systems are actually worse for the planet than the highly optimized industrial processes. Simply wrapping your barrel in a fiber insulation will cut your melting time and energy usage by a MASSIVE amount. Right now you are putting more heat into the room than into the plastic. This is the same as banning plastic bags. If you consider that paper bags weigh many times more and the increased fuel used for transportation paper bags use more oil than plastic bags which can be used multiple times, recycled and used to replace trash bags. Paper bags are usually destroyed half way through their first use if they even last that long. It is much more important to focus on recycling and increasing efficiency than trying to do these low tech replacements.
@mortarriding3913
@mortarriding3913 3 жыл бұрын
While there's some validity to what you're saying, you skip over two fairly substantial solutions. First with PP; they set up with the intention of preventing plastic going to landfill, that there currently aren't any waste streams for. With fully developed machines, and processes, they should be able to achieve that goal, while not attempting to be competitive with more efficient industrial processes. Second with single use bags; take your own bag. Stop being lazy.

The point of precious plastic is basically that it's a sort of movement to prevent plastic from going to landfill and encourage people to reuse it. It's not meant to be some big superpac with billions of dollars in research funds providing industrial machinery and fully researched and finished processes. It's more a social thing to help bring about a necessary change in how we view and use plastic.
