Plastic Pointers #10 - Dodge Challenger Urethane Bumper Repair

John repairs a thermoset polyurethane (PUR) bumper using the airless plastic welder. This type of repair is not a fusion weld repair. It's like a braze or hot melt glue repair. It's very important to not overheat the base material! Thermoset polyurethane is not meltable. Trying to melt the base material can result in damage.

Good job 👍🏻 We dont see thermoset bumpers much in the Uk nowadays Merc were probaly the last european OEM to use that material. Sometimes spoliers and bumper lips are made of it.

I believe Porsche and Mercedes still use it for bumpers.

Thank you! This was a 2016 or 2017 Dodge Challenger bumper. It looks like the 2021 models also have urethane bumper covers. There aren't a lot of late model cars with urethane bumper covers, but they do exist! Unfortunately, people don't think they are repairable.

Круто!!! А можно произвести работу, тем же способом, как и заварка сшытым полиэтиленом? Тоесть - просто паяльником? И какая должна быть температура основного шва. Например - Бампера? Спасибо за ответ.

This is not fusion welding. You must use a thermoplastic urethane welding rod and the airless plastic welder. You cannot weld with gas. The base material cannot be overheated or it will be damaged. Just melt the welding rod into the v-groove without heating the base material.

@@scottb7600 thank you. But I have watched all of those videos 😂. I’m just trying to process how to weld a 90 degree butt joint with urethane.

@@wickedgood1984 On a 90 miter joint you would start with a fillet on the inside of the 90. With the pieces apart sand the surfaces that will be the inside of the 90. On the outside surfaces create a 30 deg bevel on both pieces. Tape the outside of the parts with foil tape so the inside is 90deg then fill the inside corner with filler rod, making a fillet of the urethane rod. Once cool, add urethane rod to the outside of the 90 and over the bevels, building it up to form as sharp or radiused corner as you want. Sand the outside to the desired profile. The process is just a variation of a butt "weld" for a flat surface. Be aware that as the material cools on the inside 90 it will pull the 90 closed, but the outside material will pull it back out somewhat. so if precision is needed, you may want to start the angle a degree or two more open before adding the urethane to the inside fillet.
