Plastic Welding Repair and Recycling

The best way to affix something to polyethylene plastic is to weld it on using some heat. That's assuming what you are trying to affix is also made from p.e. This works excellent for repairing holes in kayaks and plastic bass boats. And in this case, adding a cup holder to my Pelican Bass Raider.
My original attempt to attach a steel cup to the boat with the marine adhesive known as 5200, failed because just about nothing will stick to HDPE. It's been weeks since I shot this video and still no leaks. She may not look like much, but plastic welding sure does get the job done!
On a side note, this video's moral is to recycle and reuse. But you see me cutting up a Roundabout that for all intents and purposes, is perfectly functional. Thing is, a manufacturer is never wanting to put a flawed boat out in the marketplace. Too many problems can arise if someone got their hands on it and it sunk or they wanted warranties fulfilled. So, rather than give them away, it is way smarter for a company to destroy a damaged boat.
My job here is to try and reuse some of it so it doesn't all wind up in the trash. I wish more people would find uses for old things and repurpose them. There'd be less trash in the world and more treasure.

Great information. I bought a soldering gun kit that came with wide flat tips for cutting rope, etc. It's my go to for plastic welding. It's slower than a torch but works.

When I first subscribed, I wondered what those were! It was quite a while before I even caught a mention, and even longer before you showed someone using one of them. They're such neat little boats. Also, the ease of repairing HDPE is partly why I love having a kayak! It was also videos much like this one which encouraged me to purchase a couple basic tools to do simple plastic-welding repairs. So thank you!

I love your diy videos. My friend dropped his hobie stand up kayak off the pickup and was going to trash it till I asked him for it. I’ve gotten two years of fishing out of it using your videos to fix it up. Granted it’s a bit ugly cause I figured out some stuff for myself, the fish don’t seem to care about the appearance and it’s a blast to use on the lake. Thanks for sharing your knowledge .

Dang...I passed on a real cheap Hobie kayak a couple months ago because it had a crack in the bottom. I thought about one of your older videos where you were doing this, but figured it would be a hassle coming up with the right type of plastic. Never thought a five gallon bucket would work... Oh well, live and learn!

Hi Marty! Great video as usual I've done quite a bit of welding plastics, mostly motorcycle fairings and I've found the Weller soldering gun to work for me. They have a couple of flat tipped options that allow you to slip between the two surfaces and slowly work your way along as they melt. The 200watt kit was $40 on Amazon last I knew - Regards

Great video! I never thought about doing that. I would have probably used some epoxy and roughed up the two surfaces. Good trick to have in the trick bag!!! :) Thank you.

Question: If one was more patient in the application of heat, or maybe used a pro hot air gun (such as used for stripping paint) could it have been done neater? Can one get the plastic hot enough to bond without discoloring or deforming it? Thanks. :)

i know theres been alot going on, but to not be bored i search through the archives of your channel, that is when im done kayaking in our canal, i love kayaking, there is a bridge in the channel so i went up to it, caught a mangrove crab, and dropped it, its like 6 or 7 feet deep, so im waiting for winter so the reds will come in our canal, because i caught a friggin hardhead with a crab, but it was nice to feel the pull on the rod after about a month, is this too many commas?

we have fiddler crabs in the backyard, if we had sheepshead then i would use em, but any way to attract sheepshead? i dont know if they are in our canal or in the laguna at all.
@accordino86
@accordino86 4 жыл бұрын
if you have fiddler close there is a good chance you have sheepshead close they hang out around structure like docks, jetties, retaining walls ect. the bite is very very light if you miss the light bite they more than likely will have spit it out by the time you realize it
@jakelencher817
@jakelencher817 4 жыл бұрын
@@accordino86 yeah cause the fiddler crabs tend to just "disappear" off my hook. i think they may be a little harder to get out of the hole considering we just got a cold front last night and it is going on us hard right now, i havent used the crabs in a while though, i think we may be getting reds in the canals because it's a cold front. is there like a good hook size to use for em though, i havent seen any eating barnacles. however i saw a barnacle eat the tiniest shrimp ever.

Why not use the bucket and repair the damaged boat. That would be the better recycle move. Why scrap a boat because of a small blemish crack on the deck. You should offer the boat at reduced price to your patrons. I would have bought it and I'm sure many others would have as well. Stop cutting up good boats man. Anyhow... I still love you man keep up the videos
