The best way to affix something to polyethylene plastic is to weld it on using some heat. That's assuming what you are trying to affix is also made from p.e. This works excellent for repairing holes in kayaks and plastic bass boats. And in this case, adding a cup holder to my Pelican Bass Raider.
My original attempt to attach a steel cup to the boat with the marine adhesive known as 5200, failed because just about nothing will stick to HDPE. It's been weeks since I shot this video and still no leaks. She may not look like much, but plastic welding sure does get the job done!
On a side note, this video's moral is to recycle and reuse. But you see me cutting up a Roundabout that for all intents and purposes, is perfectly functional. Thing is, a manufacturer is never wanting to put a flawed boat out in the marketplace. Too many problems can arise if someone got their hands on it and it sunk or they wanted warranties fulfilled. So, rather than give them away, it is way smarter for a company to destroy a damaged boat.
My job here is to try and reuse some of it so it doesn't all wind up in the trash. I wish more people would find uses for old things and repurpose them. There'd be less trash in the world and more treasure.
