Plating our boat's hull - Ep. 9

In this episode we add in the stringers and the side plating of the hull. We come across a few difficulties (as always) and show you what we did to make it work.
Our steel monstrosity is starting to take shape, and look like something that will hopefully one day float.
We started building in summer 2017 and this video was taken in spring 2018. Since then we've moved the boat from the shed you see here to a boatyard. We have experienced some major setbacks with some crucial parts that were badly made and have decided to move house etc. We're still working on the project, but both having full time jobs we won't be breaking any records getting it done.

I looked at Bruce Roberts steel hulls several years ago, we conversed with him through emails and even purchased a set of drawings from him. Fate sneaked in and changed my course. I've watched a few builds of the Roberts hulls, I think even though yours are shorter in film time they are more informative as what "real" hurdles you are faced with. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them so far. Keep the films short and keep up the fantastic work.

This may be a bit radical, but if you can't sort it out with those radius plates, would you consider cutting strips of metal sheet same way you would with wooden planks, weld strip after strip to close the gap. Perhaps not the best idea but functional and at least one to consider.

Just stumbled on this channel. What a project you have dude. I love watching boat building you probably know the tally ho project on KZbin. Ive never really seen small scale steal boat construction like this before and it's supper interesting. I'm a welder my self mainly vehicle registration and before that on agricultural machinery but this is making me question my career choice. Keep the episodes coming dude

I did a boat-building apprenticeship with McMullin & Wing. We built steel and alloy yachts. OK this is how we did plate rolling. The plates where typically small - a 2400mm x 1200mm cut to 2400mm x 600mm. You need to divide and conquer here - small plates First we made a vertical plywood pattern for each frame - our frames where 400mm apart - you could put in more frames just in the aft section. We also cut longitudinal patterns about 150mm apart where the plate was to sit. Two men would hand wheel the plate in a standard wheeling machine - stopping every few minutes to check the templates against markings on the plate - black marker.. if you have not got a wheeling machine or do not want to buy one they are easy to make - sheet steel 2 wheels and a truck jack Off course you have the great advantage with steel because you can use heat and a hammer to get the final fit. Hope this helps

I got crushed under a fuel tank at work when I was 28 am now 56I have endured 3 major surgeries so far and live a life on pain killers but I am still hoping to get back on the water one day that's why I say get her done,be careful while you are doing it so you can finish the boat and get to enjoy it,while you can because you just never know when something bad is going to happen

This i sooo nice to watch! I wish I would have done this 20 years ago, instead of bying an old project where I ended up putting in the same amount of work and still walk down compromise alley. One thing that I liked on my shooner though was that the cooler for the engine was built into the keel, that took away the need for a thru- hole/heat exchanger and seawater pump. Something I would recomend... But I will enjoy following this project.

Good job thinking through the problems! We didn't have pre-cut plates when we plated Lady Dew so if an issue such as sagging had crept in we never knew it LOL

Same here, no pre-cut plates with my Roberts so I just overlapped the ends a little and trimmed them with the plasma cutter! Still lined up pretty well though - I Think! :-). Cheers, Garry.

Nice work! one comment though, cut outs from structural members should not have any sharp corners but all should be cut out rounded, or if you need the corner (e.g. for a door) then the corner still mus the rounded out further into the bulkhead and later on covered again. This all the prevent any notch effect and propagating crack. Keep going!

Bro the proper way of building steel boats : Metal sheets must start and end on vertical frames. No sheet joints should be allowed unsupported. This will cause distortion with weathering and long term stress . All metal sheets should be cut an shaped on plywood models first. But you did a quite good job if it's for personal use.

Newbie question, but the sheets are lying flat but looked shaped once they're hoisted? Did I miss something? It's going to be a hell of a boat - great skills and confidence!

they are flat plates (but flexible) they take on a bit of shape when we attach them to the hull. Any more shape than this and they would have to be formed/ rolled like the radius plates which go on later :)

The follow up on the issues you had early on are a bit confusing. What happend to the side plate issue ? Was it their fault , your fault ? You received new plates but that still didn't fit so what happend next ? Great job I'll be waiting for the next vids ;)

Thanks Rob, we've had new radius plates and it looks like they fit! (we managed to fit some of them and check but not all). It was their fault! admitted to corrupted cnc files. Looks good now anyway, just waiting for lock down to be over + some decent weather so we can get cracking on it again in Kent and move the boat to Wales

Hi Looking great! When you buy a Bruce Roberts cut file do they recommend shops to cut them? Also, was the steel wheelabrated then coated? What is the coating on it? Sry for all the questions

If you email Bruce from his website he'll probably direct you towards something in your region. The steel was all shot blasted and coated with a weld primer called "sigmaweld"

My friends are selling there bruce Robert's spray, there wanting £70k, at the moment there in inverness waiting for the quarantine to end. She was built by a ship yard in the north east of england, approximately 45 feet ketch.
