After reading 2 hit series in Death Note and Bakuman from artist writer duo Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, I go over their next series Platinum End and my overall thoughts as the anime adaptation comes this fall.
What did you think about the ending of Platinum End: meaningless or well deserved?

I remember reading somewhere that explained Nakaumi's suicide as god was to show how suicide can affect others even when you think it won't. Wasn't the most satisfying or well executed end but I don't think the message was life has no meaning, but the importance of giving life meaning.

First part was brilliant, although we never see the resolution of some characters stories. Overall I felt it was great but very flawed, there were only a handful of interesting characters, and you can only go so far when your "final battle" is just a big debate with some hostages thrown in. Also I'm pretty sure it was explained why Nasse was special, she existed before God as the first microorganism to exist on Earth, and when she attached herself to God he cut that piece off and it became Nasse. Considering the fact the "Aliens" said "Is it worth planting another Seed? Another God?" Its possible that Nasse was the seed.

And the aliens revelation in general just proves that it never mattered who came first (man or God) because there would also be a “okay but who created that?” Which even these divine aliens couldn’t figure out. So cherish life; but it can only be cherished if it ends

Honestly speaking i dont personally think the ending of Platinum End was meaningless, its only meaningless if youre not looking from a bigger picture, for instance each god canidate lost all hope in life and the angels came to give them hope of becoming god. In other words the angels and god themselves are hope for people to keep living, meanwhile you have the angel of destruction muni who wants the end and wants them to lose all hope in god and heaven itself which she herself in other words is basically depression, she chose yoneda beacuse she knew he can make humanitly lose all hope in god and heaven and bring a end to hope itself (god and heaven) which was basically killing (the creature) which in so if he succeded in doing so humanity would have ended why keep reading. So now as you can see god as hope, muni as depression, in the end of platinum end it displays how when nakaumi peaks into the world and sees all the people who want to kill themselves he wants to save them all instead of helping them kill themselves because he thought it would be best for humanity, after asking god who he is currently fusing with, what his job is and he says its just to watch over humans and do nothing, he then distracts the angels kills himself as god which is also known as hope, as hope is dead everyone slowly starts vanishing why you ask? because in a world with no will to live no hope for anything we would cease to exist, now nakaumi thought killing himself as god was the correct decision because god did nothing at all and as yoneda said (the creature) was not needed but he was very wrong god didnt have to do anything, he was needed in every way, Shuji Nakaumi never ever intended to end humanity. He believed the death of God will make no difference, just like how a suicidal person thinks his death will make no difference to the world around him. Suicidal people often think their lifes are insignificant, and so their deaths won't really matter. Most of them fail to see what havocs their death can cause to their close ones, just like how Shuji failed to see how his death will effect the human world, and he will never realise how wrong he was.. So With no God (hope/will) the lives all around the world ended. The Meaning: Depression saps the hope/will to live and often results in suicide. Hopefully that wasnt too long lmao

I think that the ending is just the ultimate critic against suicide. All the bad and all the good doesn't exist anymore after god kills himself, which is what happens when a person kills themselves, everything disappears, all the possibilities, all the good and all the bad, there is just nothing. A meaningless void.

Honestly I feel like Platinum end could have gone out better instead of a rushed ending. As someone who had hopes for the anime having a different ending compared to the disappointing ending that all the manga readers kept preparing us for, Metropoliman felt like a final villain that should have been there until the end and what ruined his character was the fact that he died so early on and him being red arrowed by Susumu. Yoneda was a decent character but he didn't have as much of a drive for the plot compared to the first antagonist, he was willing to give up so soon. Also I think it's kinda odd how god's body isn't immortal and still can die, especially after letting a suicidal boy to position as a new god. I can see plenty of reasons why people are upset with the ending, my reason would be Mukaido's family getting killed off after his hard effort of putting down the evilest of evil for the sake of his family just to have them get erased along with all of the cast because Nakaumi wanted to send a message.

For me, Yoneda answer is probably "what humanity would be in the next 300 to 500 years". Although "they" were not time travellers, "they" were from another planet and a species that were faster in terms of development in science, and "they" reached immortality and now yearns for death and is planting seeds and create a god to create a species that in hope that would kill "them".

Some people keeps forgetting this manga is not about fighting,is about the beautiful of living and don't commit suicide. Because if Nasse didn't save Mirai,he wouldn't have those happy years with saki,that's why he wasn't scared about being vanished. And for those who commit suicide,they might not causing the whole world vanished,but for their family/friends/lover,something does vanished,they just exaggerated it with the ending.

@@Entrejai and you actually didn't watch the ending. They specifically included a dialogue that made the entire event of Platinum End seem LESS relevant, and almost entirely irrelevant. @Ribcut
@Ribcut 2 жыл бұрын
@@Entrejai The humans in Platinum End are considered dirt. Their lives are entirely insignificant. The writer obviously showed favoritism to professor Yoneda, and he was the closest God candidate to actually figure out what was happening. That "God" was seeded by higher life forms, and entirely fabricated. They were seeking a means to end their own lives by simulating another reality, hoping a life form would discover a means to their end. These life forms were the organisms Yoneda was talking about, who would solve all technological problems and achieve immortality. Now they are jealous of individuals who CAN commit suicide. This is not some deep interpretation and is very straight forward if you took 15 seconds to actually read the ending instead of shutting off your brain the moment Nakaumi ended his life.

I think what he means is that your existence in this reality is most likely your one shot; if you kill yourself then the window shuts, and the curtains close. Realistically, from the lens you inhabit regarding this flesh suit that you are in, killing yourself and your death isn't too much different than all other's disappearing instantly. In the same way you are required to have faith in God, you also need faith that this reality will persist past your little window of time with which you get to experience it. Might there be something else afterward? Maybe, but I highly doubt that we'll be able to discern that experience from this one; or perhaps there is an ebb and flow beyond this which determines what happens. Certainly if there was and we could perceive it, this current life we experience would have markers of the other realities we may have experienced; maybe it still does, but if so we clearly can't completely identify them with our sensory toolkit provided. That all being said, I think Platinum End is like, alright. It's not really too great, doesn't really speak to the human condition, and in regards to existentialism I don't really think it's too provocative. The storylines are pretty mediocre, the characters lack substantial depth, and the resolution, ironically like the final antagonist, doesn't really speak to the viewer on a human level. In my opinion, reality isn't about the beginning, end, or an answer; it's about the experience and flowing with it. Whichever way you come to that truth, is completely dependent on your own conscious experience, which we have only a very basic binary understanding of in our current predicament.
@yato_papxios
@yato_papxios 2 жыл бұрын
You're right. I just watched the final episode and I gotta say this story was like an idea that was trying to be simplistic (action between a good hearted protagonist that wants to find happiness for the whole world and an evil antagonist that doesn't care about the rest of the candidates or the innocent and is just trying to accomplish his personal desires in the first half) and at the same time complex (with the good hearted main character maturing a little but still stands up for his "everyone deserves to be happy" belief and the antagonist trying to prove his points about life to the people in the second half) since the story took down the path from action to philosophical debate between the characters, just like you said, I wish it had deep meanings of perspective to it. Just like actual philosophers debating. To me it seemed like I was watching feelings vs logic, heart vs brain, nothing more to it. And my bigger issue with that is the fact that there can be no person like Mirai who is all about feelings and at the same time there can be no person like Yoneda either who is all about logic and that makes unrealistic, what is supposed to be a real life message. Two absolute sides. At least since we had more than two characters left I wish we had more perspectives but they were divided into 2 teams. It sure has lots of messages like: death is unavoidable but life is meaningless without it, we should be grateful for our lifes, death can impact the living world, but still so much wasted potential imo :/ (sorry about my English I wish it's understandable)

I guess in this story, consciousness and deity are entangled phenomenons, as subjective as meaningless. Consciousness "artificially" creates meaning; implies life and death, love and hatred, but in the end, nothing has sense. It's all illusion, the crowded scenes in Shibuya show that, everyone is in his own narrative, sharing stories online without having critical thinking about the "non-sense" of existence. I think it's not that Mirai has no character development, he becomes like a "buddha" and reaches his fulfillment. On the other side, Professor Yoneda recklessly seeks meaning where there isn't. There is no purpose, no end to our existence. Just a sequence of experiences, just to be taken as it is. It's the "insoutenable légèreté de l'être".

I really believed that the Platinum End story could become a masterpiece with the first half of the manga. For me, the manga had two pillars to be followed: 1 - Mirai's anti-murder ideology 2- The concept of happiness being established by each character. Unfortunately, the authors threw this a lot aside, there could have been many climaxes to put Mirai in situations of killing or dying. Or an end that the concept of "happiness" of each of the characters were established. I was very afraid of the manga becoming one of those with time travel where everything is resolved with this (like Mahou shoujo site) and the best solution I had seen was Mirai becoming God and creating a copy of it on earth that "he" could live with Saki and be happy and make the whole world happy but unfortunately the ending presented was not about the protagonist but about nihilism. I expected a "platinum" ending as the manga itself has its name, but unfortunately it is like a bad ending. Perhaps the story of this manga could be turned into a game like those where you have a different ending depending on your actions but unfortunately, with the unpopularity, I think we will never hope for Platinum End.

There was so much that could have been done to make this series so good but it just chose to end with the simulation route. I felt like my excitement to know what was going to happen next in this story was killed and wasted. In some ways that’s kind of what this is trying to do. At the end, it was a failed simulation that was setup by some Higher Beings to find death. To me it didn’t really seem like it was trying to go for an impactful and tragic ending, but more like a lazy attempt to try to put a bunch of philosophical ideas at the last minute and hoping to make an impact. true, the simulation route is the nearest to explain the end, but it was too rushed that is hard to catch it, Yoneda was re representation of the big and dense speech the manga on what is humankind, divineness, life and reality. but poorly developed and was forced to explained it in the last chapter. in my opinion it was too much ideas too hard to explain, and too much deus ex for trying to get running the plot on the way they wanted. still i admire them for bringing concepts like nihilism and religion this time

It reminds me of End of Evangelion somehow but this one is kind of twisted. But there's still something that was unanswered here and that's Nasse. Is she really something special? For me I think there's still a true God right there but humans are unable to know who or what is it and Nasse somehow knows it. I saw some people said that Ohba and Obata don't really like the fact that the manga will be cancelled. They were actually pissed off and want to end everything so that's why they erased everyone. The irony is they are the one who created the manga so literally they are the gods who created life on that manga and the rightful one to decide on how to end it.

I think this manga suffers from either baggage or execution. Fans of Death Note wanted something similar. And we're more or less satisfied with first part. Real question is are the authors always wanted to create something similar and just decided to focus on philosophy in second half? Or is first part an elaborate ruse trying to lull readers into a false sense of expectations?

They are basically showcasing their writing style and what new grounds they would like to explore. Its like don't expect NiSioiSiN to not write dialougue like NiSioiSiN. But basically the title "if you try yo decipher it" is what the story is essentially aiming for. I'm a fan of both Death Note and Bakuman. And I'm proud they pulled of Platinum End and stick to what they wanted to do, even if by default that this worl will be very polarizing.

I am coming from the anime not the manga. I think platinum end was a great series, the music was amazing, whoever was in charge of the music made perfect choices I think it's inseparable thing from the series. The art most of the times were awesome as well at least in the important scenes the art were gold. The plot was very interesting and good i loved almost everything even a character with such small screen time like Hajime, I think the falling of the series is starting from the last fight in the stadium, it was so dumb how they were captured like they forgot how to use their wings and also like u said the ending wasn't dumb but really disappointing like we don't get to understand Nasse although it was hyped all over the series because except for the end Nasse were the most useless angel. Anyway i think the anime is definitely worth watching i don't regret watching it, it's just the end is so broken...

I think in my concept should be a different main character that he is an atheist scientist who finding a proof that there is no God. Then suddenly a prediction in his dream happened to be the destroyed cause the choosen one kys. He start to become religious and finding what God truthly is. Then our OG protag meets the new protag telling that he's a God candidate. He start realize that not just him but also everyone of the people are God candidate so his plan was to ruin the game and face off the God to contradict the evidence to prove that the God is false.

The ending was extremely philosophical and beautiful. I can understand the reason why many people got disappointed with it, because it may have hurt their religious feelings or either they are extreme atheists( or ignorants) or simply shonen watchers But here's what i interpreted out. The ending showed that God is a creature, or just an energy, or maybe an intelligent being who created the entity called 'humans'. But the thing is, we humans started clinging to God for our own benefits. Inequality, hatred , injustice, humanity's truth is ultimately this. But still millions of the same humans worship God and aspire for paradise(heaven). There was a line where Yoneda says " Gods are just phenomenon we created in minds", and it's true. We fantasize God in everything, thinking he has time to benefit all of us humans individually. We aspire for paradise but we can't create paradise here on earth. We think God will do everything for us and ultimately truth is God does nothing. It is us humans after all who can change this world into a paradise. These religious gods are just fanstasized entities who we humans use as a medium to escape from our own harsh truth . That's why its said, God does nothing. It created us and it's only there to destroy us. Rest all are our own responsibility. It's us who need to change and make this world a heaven. That's why Shuji disappeared because God does nothing, but is only there. And in the course, all humans are destroyed Ultimately the ending was extremely nihilistic and beautiful in many ways. It was a rant on a major flaw of humanity to think God will do all good deeds and not us. That's why Mirai was made to think about everyone's happiness. Eventually, all humans need to be like this Plus the ending somehow showed the meaning of life

Bad story telling is bad story telling..I appreciate the symbolism and it's ultimately what kept me on the show. As a concept I prefer the philosophical discussions on the 2nd half but as a show that entertains and makes you think, they should have kept up with the themes of the 1st half more. Now the ending. I'm ok with the ending of God killing himself as it's our fault for entrusting everything to God. I agree with gods only purpose being the create us and ultimately us to figure out what to do with the life being said, assuming people will hate this ending, which personally I don't hate, I just think the execution left alot to be desires especially with the plotholes. I believe it's pompous to believe people will hate this ending because of their religious beliefs. I disagree with that view, I believe despite your religious views, a badly executed ending is a badly executed ending and one's religious beliefs don't make you blind to this fact. I like the concept of the ending, not the execution, and the mass disappearance of humanity personally has no explanation behind it so. Platinums End, Good Ideas, Amazing art. Great sound effects for the anime. Alot of potential here but the execution was bad at times and good at others. Would I recommend no, overall it's 6/10 because I want to like it more. It's just overly mediocre which I find worst than a 9/10 or a 3/10. I'm more disappointed in the production of the story vs the story itself. It's alot like when you cook popcorn for too long but without burning it

@@romenpal-m6f yes, also this series is a seinen so expectations should have been different. I think this show killed off metropoliceman too quick and they had god candidates that easily agreed with one another. The first ones were degenerates but the other half were misguided. It would have been better to have see the god candidates reflect negative aspects about humanity since the show wanted to go on the philosophical part. Also the kid with the trump mask was probably the worst character on this show, he was more of a plot device than a human. Also the woman who wanted to keep her red arrow, probably the most believable character in the show other than the professor.

They really screwed up killing Metropoliman. I think, overall, out of all the numerous things wrong with this manga, is was when they killed Metropoliman that was the biggest misstep. And I see a lot of ppl saying "It's not supposed to be about the action scenes" "it's not supposed to be a happy ending." That's not what the problem was. I love philosophical discource. That's why I read Death Note. I don't care about happy endings. Thats why I hated the ending of FMAB. But this ending just wasn't it, and the story itself flopped many times over. That said, I enjoyed the read.

Nasse seems to be ironic in the anime when she says something along the line "..so I should also died, because I'm just an angel too [ 😉]. That made me think that not only she was something that existed before the creating of the creature but maybe part of the parts of heaven [or outside heaven] where the real supreme beings exist. I could be reading too much but it seems to me that there's a level above where the creature/god existed.

After finishing the anime, I realised that this is slightly based on a story 'Five boobs of life'. Which teaches us the value of death. There are many things in this anime that I disagree with, even the ending. But that doesn't mean that I didn't like those things. The fact that I really liked the ending even though I disagree with it is something even I don't know. Everyone has different believes about God, they follow different religion, no religion etc. When I was watching the anime l, had the set aside my personal believes so I can understand the anime's perspective. It's not that I will stop praying to the god I had been believing for my whole life just for an anime. I watched that anime thinking that it was an anime and nothing else. I don't think that the characters were shallow. I think that they weren't portrayed very well. And just had firm believes that they didn't wish to let go. This was a very good anime and I doubt that I will forget it.

I think the writing was lacking a little. The later half after Metropoliman died felt lacking and without a clear purpose or direction for the story. In the end we're left confused and wondering why the story happened to begin with. It also gives the first half of the story less meaning imo. The guy that died for his family's safety is never revisited or really touched on again. I think it's just became a very nihilistic story in the end. One that attempted to create a high level thinking about purpose and meaning but completely missed communicating those ideas.

I'm conflicted. I didn't hate the ending, but I wasn't satisfied. And the last half was very dialogue heavy and philosophical. But, what about Nasse? She seemed like she would be the true God. I mean, I felt let down in a way. It seemed like a very depressing ending as we don't even know what entirely became of our characters other than assuming they're dead. Also, I know the story is fictional, but the numbers and such are way off when it comes to number of deaths every day, those who believe in God, etc. I am glad I read the manga, however. Death Note is definitely better and the ending while somewhat depressing, had closure.

I don’t even think it was really a suicide. Think about it, if it was really a suicide, why did Nasse tell the angel of destruction that SHE caused all of this? She planted the ideas into the professor that inevitably was enough of an inspiration to make the child do whatever he wanted him to do. The child states after everything he did and even after betraying the professor he still 100% believed his ideals and wanted to help him in the professors plans. The angel of destruction planned all of this and i feel as if this is the hidden truth of the matter. And for the text at the end, i feel like those were the thoughts of the Angel of destruction and not the creatures that created the “god”. This might just be a crazy theory i put together but I truly believe the god of destruction was the main problem in this entire anime and the one person/thing that caused the ending. Also, another point. The god of destruction said multiple times that the professor was fit to know the truth, which possibly is an indicator that he was worthy enough to be so into his ideals that it would be easy for her to manipulate him into causing such a massive mess that could cause what happened.

The same way Jojo Part 7 and 8 we're labeled Seinen despite having fighting scenes like their Shonen counterparts since the manga had darker and deeper themes. Even Araki considered his later work a seinen. So, I will continue to classify Platinum End as a Seinen as it clearly had darker and deeper themes. Especially with it's philosophical discussions at the very end. Metropoliceman for example doesn't represent a Villian from a shonen

I liked the ending since the message is something I realized after too many years of pondering upon the answer to the following question. What is the meaning of life? The answer is not what you may think. Which is...to not ponder upon it too much. The ending gives this answer in quick succession with the last few pieces of text which is what I agree. If you go through life wondering the meaning of it all. You’ll be distracted and won’t enjoy life to the fullest. God proving to the profesor that he was right was symbolically showing that pondering upon this question will only lead to a fruitless end. So...don’t think about it too much and do what you want. But if you want a better ending where everyone dies then watch Future Diary. Way better ending.
