Western anime fans tend to heavily associate anime with the well recognized "anime art style", and a few specific writing styles or genres, because the anime that usually becomes popular over here are usually the conventional shonen/seinen shows. But in Japan "anime" can refer to any animated work produced in Japan, because that's what the actual word means. It is just the Japanese word for animation.

Some guys made an english fandub of Hametsu no Mars (the third worst-rated anime on the list) and it was hilarious, they voiced every character with the same dude voice and replaced sound effects like gun sfx with toy squeaks or dolphin sounds while adding cheesy music over it, a fantastic experience overall. Its rating would definitely have been higher if that fandub was the official

But it is not, I just checked it on MAL, two or three of the voice actresses here are still active on big named animes even now. Edit: and they are not just minor characters, their characters mostly have important roles

I’d love to suggest The Endless Eight arc in Haruhi Suzumiya. A great anime, and I actually loved this arc - but imagine watching the same episode eight times in a row, with the most minor differences possible. People had to wait a week between each episode, only to see the exact same thing. It’s like the Dr Strange Dormanu segment spread out over eight weeks. Perfect.

My favorite thing about Endless Eight is that KyoAni had like 3 other novels they could have adapted, but decided it'd be better to make a 40ish page story into basically an entire season. It's the most high effort avant-garde shitposting I've ever seen, and they totally got away with it.

I loved the arc, but I wasn’t as familiar with the source material, and I can just imagine his expectations were, only to be stifled. It’s almost like a social experiment gone wrong.
