Ginge here. The song has several layers. Tim IS singing about the N word, in a safe way people can understand. He's singing about prejudice in general. Our own prejudices led us to immediately thinking he was singing about a different word. And while in America ginger isn't really a derogatory thing, there are times and places in the world where red heads were killed as witches. South Park didn't really help with the whole 'gingers have no soul' thing, either. Remember phrases like 'beat you like a red-headed stepchild'? Tim himself is amazing. He's moved away from a lot of the comedy he did a decade ago, so if you did go see him today, he's doing more serious stuff. But it's just as wonderful. He also wrote the music to Matilda and wrote the play version of Groundhogs Day. He played an incredible Judas in JCSuperstar. He's an actor and has been in Californication, the Artful Dodger, Upright, Secret River, and he was an uncomfortably cut Friar Tuck in Robin Hood.

Ranga short for orangutan Fanta pants because pubes are orange 🍊 Tim is amazing good. Intelligent, edgy and great pianist. And the misdirection at the start is a misdirection in itself. The whole song is actually about the word we were all thinking of at the start. Tim has heaps of excellent comedy songs all with a message and all funny af! He also has some beautiful serious songs which are also worth checking out. He is touring USA atm! He has written the music for two Broadway musicals, was in the tv show Californication, written and started in his own tv show Upright and played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway.....So yes too much talent and success for one human 😂

Tim wrote Matilda the musical, he is one of Australias heroes... we all love him. This song has a lot of similies between the two words, the stereo typical sayings.. such as once youve gone Black, you wont go back. One of many he put in there. He has a lot of comedy but also some serious stuff. He did a song with an Aussie Rapper who has supported Ice cube by the name of "Briggs" (part of A.B.Original) They did it during lock downs. Its called "HouseFyre"

- Ranga (Orangutan) or Fanta Pants - Bozo (the clown) or Fire Truck - Carrot Top or Blood Nut - Match Stick or Tampon (both making reference to something pale white with a red top, Match Stick also can be reference to Red Head brand matches) All these and many more are slurs against people with red hair. I used to get called Duracell a lot too, the Australian slang for a Duracell battery is copper top because of the colour of the positive end of the battery and my hair is a verry coppery red colour. Best revenge I ever got for the teasing was in electronics class, i got asked how I tell the difference between my hair and the copper wires, I asked the person who asked to come close and I'll show them, I pulled a hair out from my head and put it on the hot soldering iron making sure they got a good smell, no-one asked that question again (if you've smelt burning hair you know why)

So it makes the twist even better. Tim is an amazing wordsmith and musician!! Tim Minchin is a friggin genius. There's a live show with an orchestra, you should watch the whole thing. Even just go one by one from the beginning, it's going to take you on a fantastic ride. He's like Bo Burnam on a whole other musical level. I don't always agree with his social or political commentary, but I always appreciate the mastery with which he delivers it. A great example of his skill is a song called You Grew on Me. The first couple times I heard it, all I took away was a kind of silly, maybe a bit cynical look at romance. Then it got stuck in my head and as the layers peeled away, underneath this kind of dark comedy is one of the most beautiful and sincere love songs I've ever heard. It's absolutely brilliant.

Tim Minchin is just wonderful, so many other good songs you can catch up with. With regards to this song, yes the letters spell ‘ginger’ but depending on how you write it, it’s an anagram of the other word you alluded to. Oh man you’ve got to look up & listen to more Tim Minchin. I know you’d appreciate his wordplay & he’s a fantastic pianist & composer. He wrote the score to Mathilda the musical & has done a lot of musical theatre as well as his unique one-man comedy tours. I hope you check out more. I really enjoyed your reaction.

one meaning of "fanta pants" refers to red hair in the pants being the colour of the fanta drink. Ginga is an aussie slang term for a red head. A lot of these terms are Aussie slang, but the two words have the same letters

I don't know of any gingers that actually consider it a harmful word. But it is kind of funny that it's a derogatory word that nobody gives a shit if you use it.

That's exactly the point of the song, he's calling out the hypocrisy of why it's OK to use derogatory word and not another derogatory word that has the same letters, both derogatory words should be treated the same as they both were used for the same types of discrimination

I love this song. Tim is fantastic. He's got a really unique writing style and his wordplay is extremely clever. I've always been impressed by people who have this kind of talent Because music speaks to me on a very raw and emotional level. A lot of his stuff is funny, but he's got some stuff that'll tear your heart right out. You ever hear a song or a verse that hit you so hard, you couldn't hold back the tears? It happens to me a lot. It's like music imprints itself onto my soul. Can't help it. Music is life to me. The part you sing on Shroud makes me fucking weep bro.

Tim is doing a small tour in the USA and Canada currently and I will see him next week. A multi- talented and intelligent Australian. He's written 2 Broadway and West End musicals among all the rest that he has done. If you want to see him being "grown up" his most recent release was Play It Safe done for the 50th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House.

If you want to be blasted at Tim’s piano playing ability - Dark Side, awesome version. But, Tim’s music can go from piss yourself laughing to serious topics. He’s even written an Australian Christmas Carol, White Wine in the Sun (it’s summer time during Christmas is Australia, and commonly sit outside having a BBQ with family. He wrote that song while living in London. He has been there for a few years). But definitely Dark Side, Pope Song, Storm, Inflatable You, Lullaby (Black Pegasus didn’t like that one, took it too literally) Not Perfect… and then White Wine in the Sun (warning, it’s only 1% funny but a MUST watch).

@@KrizzKalikoOfficial reading through the comments, glad to see others recommending White Wine in the Sun. Might want to do it closer to Christmas, and if you are going to do that, you might want to also try another Australian legend (Australia’s Bob Dylan) who also created an Australian Christmas song - Paul Kelly’s “How to make Gravy”. If you want context to the song, to understand the Australian culture for why these two songs are culturally important, and not your usual Christmas songs, let me know and I’ll DM or reply here. Actually,… because Lullaby strained Black Pegasus’ impression of Tim Minchin that much, this could be an opportunity to do a reaction with him, where you are re-introducing him to Tim.

Tim Minchin really is on a whole different level to so many of his 'contemporaries'. Clever wordplay, subversive, hilarious, irreverent, self-taught...then there's the whiplash of going from this, and The Pope Song, Thank You God, Cont, and Lullaby for example, to White Wine In The Sun, Not Perfect, and I'll Take Lonely Tonight which is intense, but not surprising
