1978 Leaving the hospital with the rest of my family after the death of my Dad, I started my car and the first few notes of this song began playing from the radio as I sat in the parking lot, listening. It's still one of the greatest and most unexpected life-lessons I've ever learned.

There were no rules back then. We didn’t care what you looked like, what you wore, your hair, skin color, sexuality. We cranked everything from The Jackson Five to Sam Cooke to Queen to Black Sabbath to Earth, Wind & Fire to Elton John. I always felt like everyone had something to offer. But I’m a hippie so ❤❤❤❤

I know Carry on Wayward Son is typically the most known or liked by Kansas, but Dust In The Wind has this hauntingly beautiful feel to it. The title is a Bible reference. Anyway, it's great to see someone enjoying the classics. Keeps those songs out there for the world to hear.

The message of this song is not an endorsement of living an Epicurian lifestyle; in fact, just the opposite. It's a reflection on humility. Seeking the accumulation of wealth & luxuries are vanity, as they will pass away just as we all will. We are meant for a greater purpose, much greater than our own selfish desires.

The 60s 70s and 80s really shows you how good the level of music can be when the industry allows ordinary looking people to make music. You get rich musicianship, deep lyrics, and complex themes. Atlanta Rythym Section is another case of amazing music from regular guys. Check out their songs -- So into You, Spooky, Champagne Jam, Not going to let it bother me tonight... Thanks as always for the reactions from so many different decades and genres!

Kell Livgren, the white haired guy in the video playing guitar wrote this song. And, the melody is a finger picking exercise Livgren used to keep his skills sharp. His wife asked him what he was playing, Livgren told her it was just a finger pickin exercise. And, she told him - well it would make a great song. And from that conversation this song was born. One other reference - the spiritual aspect of the song. Catholics on Ash Wednesday get ashes. When they get ashes, one fo the phrases the person applying ashes says - Remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return. Physics would say we are all a combination of dust that was dispersed through the universed billions of years ago by the big bang. All messages that can be found in this incredible song.

One of the best live shows I've ever seen was Kansas and Styx in a small (really small) venue in the 90's. Just three hours of two bands playing and singing. Perfectly. They still had the hair, just much more grey.🙂‍↔️

Some people don’t realize that Kansas was a Christian Rock band. Listen to the lyrics of all their songs!
@donnaerickson2021

Not exactly right. Kerry Livgren was on a spiritual quest when he started the band. He became a devout Christian and started writing more religious music. But Steve Walsh wasn’t comfortable singing the lyrics, didn’t want to be a Christian band, and just wanted to play in a rock band. This led to a parting of the ways when Steve left Kansas in 1982, and formed his own band, Streets, but ended up returning to Kansas in 1986.

So very true, a timeless piece of wisdom. I've always enjoyed this song, particularly knowing that it's based on a phrase first uttered in the time of Socrates around 2430 years ago, by the traveling philosopher Ted Logan ... "All we are is dust in the wind, dude".

As someone being born in the early 1960s, I think we had more style back in the day. You wouldn’t be seen in public with pants showing your drawers, pajama bottoms, etc. Hair, makeup, clothes…you showed your best self, had pride in how you presented to the world. Miss those days. It’s too casual now.

I enjoy your insights and commentary when you are on the other KZbin channel with your friend and subscribed to your channel as well. There is such a wide, wide world of music to enjoy out there. I don't know if you take requests but if you haven't check out Eva Cassidy. Any videos from her Live at Blues Alley are classic. Over The Rainbow, Autumn Leaves, Stormy Monday are a few great ones that show her versatility from classics to the blues. Thanks you for sharing Kansas. This song is a classic and they had a few others as well. And speaking of songs that show how much more open music was back then maybe check out Lola by The Kinks. Fun and timely for today at the same time.

Another excellent KC, MO band, The Rainmakers. Their songs “Let My People Go-Go”, “Battle of the Roses”, and a fun one, “Big Fat Blonde”, are great songs to start with. Another favorite was released in I believe 2014, “Like Dogs”. The chorus and hook are about dogs, but the verses are about different kinds of men, so it’s interesting. I was loving the chorus and didn’t really catch the verses about the men until after listening several times. 🙄

They got completely let down by their record company and distribution. Imagine this: “We had the number one most played AOR song in the country with 'Last Chance' and our record company, Virgin, had gotten into a fight with Atlantic Records, who was their distribution. We ended up not being able to get our album in the stores for six months.” 🙄 “Last Chance” kzbin.info/www/bejne/omaloqOsmLyor9Esi=3hpKTpvCxc1BkdGq “Flesh and Blood” kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZqisoKJjqb6BpKssi=kO2ctEjxFV-zJi68
