Merle was the total package. He wrote, he had one of the greatest voices in country music, and he could play. He was also the poet for the common man. “Holding Things Together” and “The Farmer’s Daughter” still give me an emotional reaction.

Oh, you’re hearing Greatness in Country Music…The Hag. Master Songwriter, Guitarist, Fiddler and Vocalist. As soon as Merle was released from San Quentin - he was writing hit songs; awareness for convicts that have served their time: Lonesome Fugitive Branded Man A really great place to start with The Hag.

Unfortunately, Merle passed away in April of 2016 but he left behind a string of hits and was a legendary figure. He was, along with Buck Owens, a part of the Bakersfield sound and was not only a great singer but a great songwriter, too. Check out Mama Tried, If We Make it Through December, Lonesome Fugitive, Okie From Muskogee, The Fightin' Side of Me, Branded Man, and Are The Good Times Really Over (I Wish a Buck Were Still Silver) to get a thorough sampling. You may also want to check out his duet with Willie Nelson called Pancho and Lefty.

Sad song but beautiful. The harmonies and the haunting sound of the musical instruments really set the tone. Merle's vocals weren't what they used to be still good singing though , he sang the song with heart , powerful

Unfortunately as Merle aged, he commonly messed up the verses/lyrics in his live performances, as he did in this case. For the full effect of the song, listen to an older recording or the studio version. RIP one of the biggest legends in not only country music, but in the music of the world.

I love Waylon Jenning's guitar!! We need to do some of him! He has a whole concert on KZbin that has already had each song separated. It's Waylon & the Waylors on a stage & his iconic W up on the black wall done in white lights. Gota ❤ Waylon!!

Finally someone cover “The Hag!” He’s in my top 5. W&W, M&M. Waylon and Willie, Marty and Merle. (Of course there’s other greats like George Jones, Highway men.) Merle is on my daily playlist. He lived most of his songs and his sons Noel and Ben are spitting image of him. There’s a video of Noel explaining Merle’s story behind this song. It really cuts deep.

Great one Krizz. I got to go see Merle on the Marlboro tour in Houston Texas in the 80's. Been a fan ever since then. His catalogue of Music will be a fun Rabbit hole to watch you react to, if you decide to. Personally, one of the many Favorite songs of mine that he performs is "Misery and Gin". I think you would like it. Also.. we been keeping it like you put it... "I Got my hand on the Bible, Other hand upon a Rifle." In South Texas from the moment we were old enough to Understand. Much love to you and yours.

If you love harmony, some of the best is by the Trio, an all-star group formed by Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. Look for such gems as: Telling Me Lies, Wildflowers, Where Will the Words Come From, My Blue Tears, After the Goldrush, and many others.

Seems like you are into unique music that maybe isn't heard every single day on every channel everywhere you go. If you are there is an Irish country singer, he is awesome. His official video has 11 million views on it already. It may not be very popular in the state yet, but it should be. His name is Derek Ryan and the song is "Made of Gold". It's honestly one of the best and most beautiful songs I've ever heard, You won't be disappointed istening to it.
