It is worth checking out the biography of Alcibiades for more context. He had a very exciting and eventful life. With the war between Spart, Athens and Persia, he at one point betrayed each of them for each. This dialogue is probably written after Alcibiades died and with hindsight, so ironic foreshadowing in the dialogue Plato seems to actually mock Alcibiades for his stupidity and vice. Another dialogue, Plato's Symposium, also has some interaction between Socrates and Alcibiades and he is portrayed largely the same.

When attributing concepts found in the platonic dialogues. Do we attribute them to Plato or Socrates?
@lewiskirk82893 жыл бұрын
I always attribute them to Plato. He is using Socrates as a mouthpiece. In my opinion.
@heidikickhouse-2 жыл бұрын
@@lewiskirk8289 Knowing nothing of course when I first studied this fifty-three years ago, I attributed your "concepts" to Plato, and the integrity, the goodness, to Socrates. Unlike the Gospels, written centuries after the events occurred (or didn't), I assumed Apology had to resemble somewhat the conversations that had occurred, if not that day, on that topic. For example, the Socrates created in a young girls' head would have never have disparaged theatre (even just to make a point), I remember arguing heatedly at 15/16 for a distinction I had entirely invented.

Foundational work of western philosophy and civilization: First sentence: gay
@Sara3346 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! It is a very contemporary and simplified way of phrasing the matter, but it is a solidly correct conclusion I believe. Anyone who tells you homosexuals are not a critical part of the western canon is either misguided in their knowlege or misleading to serve an ahistorical agenda or both.
@necrosteel5013Ай бұрын
@@Sara3346 you do know their definition of love is not at all of the type you believe. homosexuality is eros, which is one kind of love considered a vice and a madness, in fact sexual love in general is seen in that light. agape is another form of love, particularly because its devotion to gods. philia is another form of love, that of imperfect friendship...similar to eros it's driven by pleasure, which is simply feeling good in the general sense, like eating tasty food or having pleasant conversation. your perversion of the ideals of the Greeks as something they historically and actively hated since they openly used homosexuality as an insult, is absurd.
