Most of the politicians don't actually possess knowledge? Brilliant! Thank you for sharing your wealth knowledge Mr Sadler. Still a rare and valuable commodity it seems. I appreciate the tremendous efforts put forth in these videos.

Yes, from the Platonic view on knowledge, most politicians definitely don't possess it - really one could say the same about those who run organizations of all sorts, whether businesses, schools, military units, etc. I'm glad to read that you enjoy the videos - if you'd like to support my work producing them, here's my Patreon page - www.patreon.com/sadler

new Core Concept video - about the people Socrates is really concerned over at his trial, and why he thinks they'd turned against him years back

For many people today Socrates is seen as a rebel in the progressive sense, but is his critique more from a conservative stand point? Was he criticizing people for their (at that time) modernity?
@GregoryBSadler10 жыл бұрын
Neither, really -- political and cultural categories like progressive and conservative don't really fit genuine philosophy (Aristotle noted something similar in his Politics)

Conservative in the abstract sense, that of wishing to conserve some past or present state of affairs from a perceived dangerous innovation, definitely. But words like 'conservative' in our present day are loaded with connotations. For instance we can say that people with centre of left opinions who are afraid of a rightward turn in the politics of their youth are reacting in a conservative manner against a social development, but most of us would find it odd if you called them "conservatives", because the word conservative has its own long embedded set of meanings and assumptions.

Thank you for the videos! I've watched a lot of them over the past year and they provide some real clarity and fill up a lot of the holes in my knowledge. Really useful :)

Excellent video. As usual, Dr. Sadler carefully and succinctly clarifies a philosophical concept. I highly recommend that anyone who is interested in ancient philosophy - especially Plato's work - watch this video.

Thanks for sharing these interesting materials. Could it be possible to allow me (and others) to contribute to translations? Because in my country (and others) people are not necessarily good enough in English to understand. It would be very helpful and the world would become better.

These lectures have been wonderful in my development as a philosophy student. Thank you very much for these great lectures. I wanted to ask you if you would be interested in producing some lectures on the works of the major Islamic philosophers (philosophers such as ibn Sina, al-Ghazali, ibn Rushd, Omar Khayyam). Would you be interested in producing some content on the works of these philosophers? Thanks
@GregoryBSadler10 жыл бұрын
People have asked that from time to time. The answer is Yes and No. I've got tons of content in Western Philosophy yet to produce -- and each hour of video probably amounts to something like 4-6 hours of time spent total. So, I could quite literally keep working for years just between Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, etc. The other thing is that while I've read Muslim philosophers, I'm by no means a specialist in their thought, as I am (or can at least claim to be) for many of the thinkers I shoot video on.

Professor, I have a question. In Plato's writings are his philosophical ideas being expressed the ought the character of Socrates? Or are those ideas Socrates, or both? If they are both, how do we know who's ideas they are? I hope this makes sense. Thanks
@GregoryBSadler10 жыл бұрын
The more of Plato you read, and the longer you study him, the better you get about deciding how much of it is Socrates, how much Plato, and how much is both (which you'd expect, given that Socrates was his teacher) If they're both, they're both person's ideas, since they're in agreement -- just like if you and I have the same idea, it's not like my having the idea means you can't have it, or your idea is really just my idea in your head. You and I just have the same idea, yours in your head, mine in mine

As a neophyte, reading the Apology is, at times, confusing. Language such as, " Is not this ignorance of the disgraceful sort, the ignorance which is the conceit that the man knows what he does not know?" (Translated by Benjamin Jowett (1871; 1892).) To me, this could mean that the man thinks he knows something but he is wrong and doesn't know it. Or, it could mean that the man knows there are things he doesn't know." I gather from the overall theme that Socrates is referring to the first interpretation, but the sentence caused me to ponder over something that could have been stated more clearly. Perhaps a different translation would help?
@GregoryBSadler10 жыл бұрын
There are plenty of other translations of Plato readily available for you.
@Myshcan10 жыл бұрын
I came across a translation by R.E. Allen and recommend that to first time readers of Plato, rather than the Jowett translation.

Translations from the 19th century are hit and miss when it comes to how readable they are today. The only readable translations I've read written from that century were by Aubrey Stuart. He translated Seneca's essays and Plutarch's lives.
