As an asexual person apart of the aromantic/asexual community, this is beautiful to me. This will open the door to more platonic relationships between all types of people. Remember, asexual people are a spectrum. Some have sex, some dont. Ask your partner what they want. What we don't experience is sexual attraction. Think of it like a more spiritual and emotional bond that is more intense than the average acquaintance. It's 2022 and people don't need to marry into a sexual partnership if they don't want too. I love this! Most older Asian marriages are like this too, they're just between a man and a woman. We've been sold a story in the West that marriage should be based on passion and romance. But the truth is those things eventually fizzle out and what you're left with is love, respect and caring for one another. Why can't that also be the case here? Most marriages evolve into financial commitment, family commitment and a sense of safety...especially when you're older.

@@r.jdavos1981 No, we have instilled a fear of intimacy in this generation by instilling an "avoidant attachment style" by putting children age 5 and under into daycare, othercare, and leaving the baby/toddler with grandma instead of babywearing and co-sleeping for 90%+ of the day. Dr. Faye Snyder says in her books that a 1-year-old child can't handle more than 1 hour away from their mom per week without getting core damage to their personality, I'm guessing borderline personality disorder (BPD), as it says in her book The Handbook. It's where the BPD symptom "frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment" come from. They can't stand to be abandoned because it triggers their unconscious memories of their babyhood terrors of being abandoned by their moms as infants, if only for an hour. Babies don't know why their mom left, and in our evolutionary past on the African savannah, the only situation where the mom wasn't near her baby was because the mom had died. If mom is dead, that means no breastmilk for the baby, and the baby will die of dehydration and/or starvation most likely. So, babies evolved to want to stay near their mom's nipple at all times. This is why the skin-on-skin babywearing slings, frontal knapsacks, and women shirts that can hold newborns and young babies exist. People who have a secure attachment style don't fear intimacy/abandonment. At the root of a fear of intimacy is a fear of abandonment. If you weren't abandoned by your mom as a baby, even temporarily, you won't have a fear of intimacy. Go read John Bowlby.

Wow... this never crossed my mind as an option. The best relationship I ever had was with a roommate for over 4 years. The apartment we had together, I originally got with my cousin. He was dating her and he moved in when they got more serious. Then one day, she pulls a total "See U next Tuesday" move, cheats and breaks up with him, and decides she wants to move in with some new guy. Leaving both of us hanging (me with the apartment lease). He, being low on money, living paycheck to paycheck with bad credit at the time and not wanting to move back with his parents, agrees to stay with me till the end of the lease (5 months left) and take over my cousin's part, which was a big help. What came out of that was an amazing 4 year partnership between two completely different people. Him a beer guzzling, football watching, X-box playing, red meat and fatty food eating, blue collar, every other word cussing, messy slobbish, macho chest beating straight white man. Me, a wine sipping, musical watching, health food eating, fitness obsessed, drag wearing, vanity focused, effeminate latino gay man. And we just complimented each other and got along wonderfully. I cooked and cleaned, he handled the heavy duty chores. I helped him get his finances in order, and get into healthier and better shape. He helped me become less obsessed with looks (my own and others) and grow a back bone in my actual relationships, as I use to let men walk all over me. And by extension, my work life. I'd call him my "hubby" and he'd refer to me as his "wify". There was even a long period where neither one of us were dating anyone, and we were just content. We'd go and have dinners or plan weekend activities together and it was strictly platonic! Of coarse time came when we had to move on to the next part of our lives. We still keep in touch, but live completely different lives now. But I always look back to our time together as the most comfortable and fun relationship I ever had with anyone... and it was without sex!!

I’ve met a couple who was in a similar relationship. The only difference is that they were 79 years old and had been together for over 40 years. Their relationship enabled them to buy a house, look after each other, and become prosperous women living in the south. Eventually, they were able to help tons of people in our church and would spend their time educating children and doing missionary work in Haiti. They never got officially married but they genuinely loved each other. Only one is still alive today. It’s my opinion, that this type of relationship can work for many who don’t want to follow a traditional route as long as the values and respect are there. This is coming from a conservative person.

This is very interesting cause I was just thinking about an old girlfriend of mine whom I lost touch with and was wondering what she was up to. I also thought about if she is alone then I wouldn't mind living with her. I am very hetero, but after a difficult marriage and divorce and at this stage in my life, I don't want to live with a man. I realized that they don't make good living partners for me. I don't want to share a bathroom with them, I don't want to live up to their libido, I don't want to cook, clean, do their laundry for them. I don't want to put up with the stress of him looking at other women or wondering if he is cheating when he starts acting weird. I don't want any of that anymore. However, I think it's important to have someone in your life who can be as close to you as a husband but without the physical attraction. With men, there's always the issue of sex. I can do without it now. So this story is quite interesting and eye opening.

@marshmallow76402 жыл бұрын
There is plenty of platonic opposite sex relationships. I don’t know why they only showed same sex couples. Also not sure why you think opposite sex wouldn’t work out, there are plenty of non-sex crazed people.

I mean good for them if they're happy.. I just dont think this is a good idea in the long run. Binding each other in a marriage contract in a relationship that's ultimately just best friends who are roommates just seems so unnecessarily complicated. But i guess as long as they're happy and all that, good on them

yeah because the couple that has known eachother for a year and number 1 thing is that they have crazy sex together has alot more weight to stand on it terms of a long term relationship. "just best friends who are roommates" is already doing better than alot of marriages of a man and woman that dont even speak to eachother in their day to day.

This gives me hints of polyamory. Because for the first couple since they aren't romantically involved and raising children what happens when and if one of them does find a romantic partner? This is a safety net it seems because they fear taking a chance on a new person to have this with in their life. It's understandable but this can get very messy quickly. I guess I could see this as feasible if they were elderly individuals instead of young people.
