I think my takeaway is that you were driving pretty well in this round, so the "aggressive" play was just getting you a couple clubs closer; but for those of us with much higher handicaps, the misses will be much bigger, so when it comes to risk vs reward, there could be much higher risk in hitting driver or going for hero-shots. As I continue to try to bring my handicap down, I know the difference in my scores would be much bigger than one stroke, so I'll continue to play with my head and rely much less on my swing... course management rarely fails while my swing often does.

100%, I have found the same in my play, and those I frequently play with who are serious about improving but still above five or six handicap. In almost every case, the risks simply aren't worth the rewards offered by the course, when strokes can be eliminated from other parts of the game much more easily. I appreciate the "strokes gained" analysis and theory by Broadie, but it is only applicable for very low handicappers and professionals who 1) have the skill to identify and execute the right opportunities to exploit its benefits, 2) have the skill to reliably recover from the inevitable errant shots especially deep rough and fairway bunkers, and 3) have a quantifiable need to gain fractional strokes over the course of a multi-day tournament, where 1-2 strokes makes the difference in where one places. People often forget that not only are their skill levels on another planet, pros and their caddies know the courses they play inside and out, they are making highly informed decisions about every shot. Similar to an F1 race, the driver and crew know the course intimately, and have strategized and tested where small risks can be taken to gain fractions of a second, which has the mathematical potential to add up to a slight edge after hundreds of laps. You wouldn't try this approach while going to get groceries in a Toyota XD

Agree with you too. This course has a lot of room for high #s for those that want to grip it and rip it. Been using the WOTP system for about a month or so and it's really taken the stress off the game and made it enjoyable--especially when I'm in the middle of the fairway watching others look in the rough and woods for their ball(s). lol

Matt, you keep hitting it out of the park with these videos. This highlighted what I’ve been thinking about. If you can’t comfortably reach the green if you are confident in yourself, you are probably going to score about the same with any club you are confidential with. And the biggest difference between a good round and a bad round is going to be your mental attitude. I’m probably the opposite of most everyone. My confidential club off the tee is my driver. For some reason I’m not confidential off the tee with other clubs. So what do I do when I can’t hit a full driver. I just hit a 3/4 driver into the middle of the fairway.

NICE PUTTING! To me, Conservative golf is not hitting a 4 iron/hybrid off the tee all the time. Conservative golf is not boring. What is boring is hitting a Driver into a fairway bunker or OB or into the water. Who likes making bogies and double bogeys all the time? That's boring. Making pars is not boring. Conservative golf can be hitting Driver (Green Light) or hitting 3 wood or 2 hybrid (Yellow Light). If the hole is not very long it certainly makes sense to lay up and hit a full wedge into the green rather than hitting a driver to an awkward distance of 50 yards to the hole for your approach shot. PGA Pro Michael Block has a good video out where he hits Driver off the tee on a Par 5, then hits a 9 iron for his second shot to 100 yards from the green, short of bunkers and creeks. Then he hits his bread/butter Lob Wedge approach from 100 yards out and makes Eagle 3 (sinks the lob wedge) when his goal was birdie 4. He says you never know what might happen when you play it smart. You see far to many PGA Tour pros going for the green in 2 on par 5's only to end up in the lake or an awkward greenside bunker position. To me, Conservative golf is going for the green in regulation, not going for the green in 1 less than regulation (i.e. going for the green on the drive on a Par 4, and going for the green in 2 on a Par 5).

Brother, I just want to say thank you. I guess I kind of did things backwards. I watched a bunch of your videos before playing my first round of real golf. I've done scrambles with the guys, but there were always gimmes, mulligans, and anger in the group. I went out by myself and played a very lovely course with the knowledge that I will suck, I will miss, but I will be smart and play to have fun. Playing every single ball where it fell (I did lose a couple to water) I shot a 122 and was so proud of myself. I took a small journal and wrote a few words about every shot I took so that I can see what works. Thanks for bringing some zen into my life.

I loved the confidence meter, because I think what players need to learn is that you should play the shot you are confident in. And that confidence needs to be a confidence that you’ll be in a good position. Most golfers are going to have clubs you’re more confident with, and clubs you’re not, you need to make sure to stick to the clubs and shots you’re confident you can hit, and stay in safety

This is great - I just can't see how to apply it practically on my particular course. It seems that the risk-reward is high on just about every hole. Eg. first - short P4, slight dog-leg left, penalty areas either side of a huge dip in the middle and trees both sides. If you play short, it's a blind shot from a 35 degree slope and possible blocked by the dog-leg. It goes on from there; there seems to be so few opportunities to play sensibly, without incurring just as much grief. I wish you could see it! Maybe there are chances to apply this wisdom on second or third shots however.

I think you might have something there about aggressive and conservative, but for me it's for something different. I find it's not just a tee off distance that is important. I find I like to leave my second shot is better for me if it's a full shot rather than trying to manipulate or conjure up a shot that is probably way above my ability. I do agree but for a different reason.

13:43 The "conservative" flop shot? 😂 Great shot though, haha. I am a 16 handicap and I can totally relate to what you said. Some people think you are playing a high risk shot when you are actually not and sometimes it can even be the other way around. I basically always play with people who are not nearly hitting it as far as I do, so they go off their own yardages and think, "Oh, 250 yards to the beginning of the water? Of course I am going ot hit driver here." At the same time I cannot even hit my 3-hybrid, because it could reach the water. On the other hand there are holes which have a huge 100 yard wide fairway between a carry distance of 270 and 320 yards, which is perfect for my driving distance. I could basically hook or slice it 50 yards each direction and still hit the fairway which can even make the driver a low risk club sometimes. For my swing speed and my handicap the conservative play usually is the better choice, because it eliminates the quadruple bogey factor. I noticed that on Par 5s I tend to hit driver more often to have a chance to reach the green in 2, which feels great, but can easily end in a disaster.

I used my driver all round yesterday which I never do. I did it as a test to see if it’s worth it. The issue I have is people use their driver then don’t take the correct penalty. If you lose your ball and drop it 230-250 meters where you’ve lost it it’s a 2 shot penalty for the loss of ball and distance rather than 1 shot penalty. If people played properly their scores would be a lot higher.

Hit the longest club you can while minimizing penalty strokes and the need to punch out. As you said early in this video, you can hit longer clubs and still be conservative and vice versa. The key to me is to think your way around the course. Either style of golf still requires to be able to get up and down.

The strokes gained theory/approach is not "Hit the longest club you can while minimizing penalty strokes and the need to punch out." The theory prescribes hitting longer in order to, over the course of time, gain fractional stroke advantage over the theoretical opponent, who is not a simple average, but a modal average, using a pseudo-statistical methodology with a non-Gaussian (ie not normalized) data set. It further ignores the difference between correlation and causation in its analysis. It prescribes a shot selection approach that heavily favors the rewards offered by a course design. The point here is that for players who are low hcp or better, they can 1) control the ball more to avoid penalties and 2) get out of trouble reliably with more than just a sideways punchout. Players above a five or six hcp, and definitely above a 9, simply cannot do these things reliably enough to make "strokes gained" a feasible strategy for shot selection and course management. Players not regularly in the mid-70s shouldn't even be considering this approach. It only offers benefits to the best players who are seeking fractional stroke advantages against their peers on key holes, in particular during the course of a multi-day tournament where 1-2 strokes differentiate where one finishes in the standing.

Strokes Gained is a calculation of the number of strokes it takes a group of certain handicap players to get it in the hole from different distances. It does not say hit it longer. That’s conclusions drawn from reviewing the data. There are numerous flaws in the calculation like types of lies and if you are short sided or not. It’s assumed that these balance out in the long term. It also ignored wind and weather conditions. Again assumed to offset over time. That being said the concept of strokes gained should come into play with every decision you make. But it’s your personal strokes gained and it factors in more than just data on how far you hit the ball, what confidence you have, the lie, the wind, where trouble is. Our minds are wonderful machines. If you listen they take everything into consideration and spit out the best course of action for that instance in time. I’ve played my course many many times with different pin positions. I can they’ll you my expected score (in whole numbers) from any spot on the course to any pin position. I’m using my personal shots gained data to make every decision. For example today we were playing and where our balls were in thick wet rough. We were 125 yards from the pin. At that point we were playing to get the ball close to the green as possible. We accepted bogey as a fair outcome.

I think hitting the conservative shot first would have been better. Your second attempt will mostly be better because you have more info

It’s almost like if you are really good at golf it doesn’t matter what you do. Also you have options driver not playing we’ll just pull out the 4 iron. A lot of weekend hackers will screw up a 5 iron off the tee so they just think might aswell just swing my driver. It’s easy to lose sight of your game plan when you try to play conservative and screw it up anyways 😅

I'll be honest with you mate, I've seen your vids on and off for the last few years now, but never really took much notice. But I've decided this season I am making a push to break 80. And from watching a few of your vids about breaking 90, breaking 100, breaking 80 and some just about thinking slightly differently, Including this one, I think you have the key I need to achieve my goal. I've only ever shot 80 once, but it was on a par 70 9 holer with 18 tees, but I pretty much always break 90. Currently 16 handicap (been as low as 12), but never played more regularly than once a month (sometimes once every two years). 53 years old with long game of a 10 handicap.....but short game of a 25 🤣 Anyway I'll stop talking sh!te........you have my sub.

The problem is that mid-high handicappers with fragile ego's on Reddit think that they should be copying the gameplan of the tour pros because of 'data'. Play your game, hit the shots you can make 9/10, not 1/10. 🤙 Plaaayaaaaaaa
