Another club maker did a video on soft stepping the 8 iron shaft in the wedges, and I took his recommendation and did my Vokey 46 degree wedge to test. Played 18 holes yesterday and shot a 4 over 76 for the round. It was so successful that I ordered 3 additional 8 iron shafts for my 50, 54, and 58 degree wedges. Looking forward to getting them installed and to the new golf season!

So glad you said the name Freddy Couples. In the first summer of Covid, I decided that I would do whatever was required to become a good chiipper& pitcher of the ball. It took months of practice to train the brain not to flinch & develop that super-smooth, precise action into the ball - i.e. being able to take a full soft swing and hit it cleanly - it's magical when you get it. I had the image of Freddy in my mind for months. You have to let the fear and stress go - and you need to practice a lot - but it's doable

Awesome video. I am going down the wedge shaft hole now as I was fit for KBS tour lites in regular... still like my "old clubs" and tried Nippon 950 NS Pro 95's in my T200's and took out the S200's in my 54 & 60 vokey and used the 950 wedge shaft and even with those shafts it was amazing the feel in the wedges. way more active tips. Hmm. The 8 iron would play soft in a regular shaft but might work for me. I have a smooth tempo big time. if I have to get aggressive it gets real ugly quick Thanks for the cool video

Great video and the new swing looks good. I currently play PX6.5 soft stepped 1x in 4-P and this year got new SM8 50/54/58 with PX6.0 wedge shafts and basically got the same effect as PX6.5 soft stepped 2x. I rarely take full swings with the wedges and the 6.0 really gave me great feel in the partial shots.

I do have something I’d love your thoughts on/experiences if any. I’m a high swing speed and physically strong player with an aggressive transition. I love the JPX hot metal/hot metal pro 919 and 921. However, I cannot get the ball flight and spin down causing me to loose significant yardage and be handicapped with wind into me. I’ve always had a high ball flight (compared to playing partners) but it is even more exaggerated with these JPX’s. I’ve tried Project X LZ 6.0 (loved the feel and seem always on line), kbs tour 120 S and kbs c-taper 130 X. The C-taper was a recommendation by a fitter in Nashville who said it would lower the flight. However, the c-taper has noticeably increased the flight but does go around 5 yards longer in calm conditions. I also play the Jumbomax Str8 grips mediums which I understand could have an effect on dynamic loft?

It depends on the head weight, but general rule of thumb is you will lose or gain a full flex with two moves. So 8iron into PW or 8iron into 6iron.

I have a fitting in the new year for just this I have DG S300 in my wedges and it feels a little heavy and stiff. I play 105-115 traditionally and I just don’t like the heavier feel for full shots or chips. 8 iron shafts may be the answer. My wedges are my bread and butter so I need to make sure they are dialed.

S300 stock wedge shaft Vs. X100 8 iron shaft correct? the spinner shaft you should go up in flex and soft step (X100 8 iron) to bring flight down decreasing dynamic loft in order to increase spin
@SwingFit

Not in this instance although you can follow this same principle with the X100 if that’s what you wanted to do. The premise behind using the same flex but the 8 iron option is to cause the shaft to deflect more as a result of it being a touch softer in the tip. It’s just a different feeling and bend profile that we have found a lot of our customers enjoy and is preferred by some of the best on your

Thanks for all the great info. I saw the videos from Mobile Clubmaker and Mr. Short Game on this, but didn’t they use a stiffer shafted 8 iron? I already got an x-flex 8 iron shaft to put in a wedge to try this out (need to get it installed).

Haven’t watched the video yet, but what I would say is you can do this with really any taper tip shaft, so it can be a dgx100, rifle, kbs or any other taper tip iron shaft and you can achieve the same result.

The way I have heard the spinner wedge is this - easier to see in a parallel shaft first. 8i os 2.5" trim, 9=3.0", W = 3.5", since most shafts do not allow 4" of trim, what you do is go to a stiffer shaft (1 flex) which equals 3 steps or 1.5" of trim. That 2.5" of trim in an X flex 8i = 4.0" trim in a SW S flex. The same thing is happening in a tapered tip shaft without doing and tip trimming. The issue is the heads progressively increase in weight and if the PW, SW, LW all had the same shaft, the S & L will not match the flex profile of the PW and they will not play the same. The flight will differ with more spin. That may be what you want but maybe not. The spinner wedge shaft as I have described it allows the player to keep the ball down on full shots. Obviously this is all highly dependent on the player's skill level and what they want out of a give club (full shots, or only partial shots)

the problem comes when people want to play a lighter iron shaft like graphite or steel in the 60-100 gram weight and then play a stock wedge shaft that are all around 125-130 grams. Going from light iron shaft to heavy wedge shaft is not a good transition. Most will benefit with a wedge shaft that is 5-10 grams heavier than their iron shafts. Especially when chipping around the greens.. Light weight wedge shafts feel to whippy and a heavier shaft is more stable and smoother for those little shots.

Is the intent that you replace your wedge "set" with the shafts in your irons? I played new irons this year and was fit into a set of Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal Pros with graphite UST Recoil shafts. I have Vokey SM8 50/54/58 wedges with stock shafts. They obviously feel a lot heavier than my irons. So based on your video, I would get three UST Recoil shafts I have in my 8 iron. Is that right?
@SwingFit
@SwingFit 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tested this theory out with graphite shafts but knowing how the UST shafts play and feel I would likely just swap out for the wedge versions if these if your looking to make them feel and play more consistent with your irons.

So I play the MMT 105TX in my irons (4-PW) and the traditional (steel) wedge flex irons in Gap, SW and LB. So should I play the MMT 105TX irons shaft and just put that in my wedges? Or would I play the MMT 105TX wedge shaft? Not certain what the difference is between the MMT 105TX iron shaft vs the MMT 105TX wedge shaft. Thanks.
@SwingFit
@SwingFit 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I haven’t tested the 105 wedge shafts but I do know the 125’s are about as stiff as they come much stiffer then the steel counterparts. So in this situation I might lean towards an iron shaft but perhaps a 9 iron shaft straight in, no extra tip. But none the less I would suggest that this be tested as right now I’m speculating based on the shafts I have tested and tried.
@MM-zb9kc
@MM-zb9kc 2 жыл бұрын
@@SwingFit I got a reply from Mitsubishi. They stated the 8i MMT 105TX will play softer than the MMT 105TX wedge flex and will produce more spin. However it doesn’t give the whole story as I still don’t know how it would compare to the steel wedge flex. Now I came from DG120 100X shafts. Any idea how the steel wedge flex shafts play compared to the 100X shafts? Or if you play a stiff in wedge flex, would it be better to play a regular in wedge flex or the 8i 100X vs the stiff wedge flex steel shaft?
@SwingFit
@SwingFit 2 жыл бұрын
@@MM-zb9kc well a wedge flex is just that there isn’t a stiff wedge flex or a reg. Wedge flex. So with that said it really comes down to how you swing your wedges. No different from the video we just created if you swing it fast and hard just like your irons you would benefit with a stiffer wedge shaft, if your trying to get more spin and swing them easier with more control then go with the softer designs.
@MM-zb9kc
@MM-zb9kc 2 жыл бұрын
@@SwingFit ok. I can actually do both. When trying to get precise I swing very smooth with my wedges but at times when I’m trying to get a little extra out of it I can swing hard. It’s funny as I usually swing my irons (4-7) with a little more authority than my 8, 9 or PW as I’m usually trying to flight those shots. I thought there was a stiff version of a wedge flex but in any case, would the 100X 8i shaft be softer than the standard wedge flex and produce the extra spin?
@SwingFit
@SwingFit 2 жыл бұрын
@@MM-zb9kc all things being equal if you are comparing an 8 iron x100 to a traditional s300 wedge shaft they will actually play very similar to that of one another, but if you plan on hitting both styles of shots then the 8iron x would be the way to go.

I currently use UST Recoil Graphite shafts, in 780 F3. I was thinking of soft-stepping my PW (46 deg) and GW (50 deg) for a full swing. Will this mean I would get a 7 iron and 8 iron shaft respectively? I use an 80-gram shaft on my lower lofted irons, but was thinking of going 95-gram for these two wedges. Also, I have been seeing forums where they go to the next higher flex? Apparently, it lowers the flight and with less spin, both to compensate for soft stepping. Do you have any thoughts on this?
@SwingFit

I wouldn’t soft step, but increase weight and stay same flex. They heads are a little heavier, and I’ve found that the extra weight does much better then soft stepping.

Umm... I thought using an 8i shaft is a 1xSS as the 9i-W shafts are all the same? I thought the DG Wedge Shaft, wedgeflex is basically an S200, not S300? I thought the trick was to go 1 flex stiffer, then SS, ie if you play an S300 in your irons, use an X100 8i in your wedges? Would the benefits of this "trick" be seen on partial wedge shots too, or just full shots?
@SwingFit
@SwingFit 2 жыл бұрын
What you described would be better suited for full wedge shots for sure. Or at least for someone with a faster transition, quick tempo, or basically anyone that swings their wedges like their irons. In regards to the 9iron through wedge shafts being the same you are correct , but what will make the clubs play softer is the weight of the heads in conjunction with the longer tip section. Really good question thanks for sharing.

SO A SOFT STEPPED 8 IRON SHAFT IS REALLY A 7 IRON SHAFT IN THE FLEX UP FROM WHAT YOU PLAY?
@SwingFit
@SwingFit 2 жыл бұрын
If I understand your question, you actually will loose a flex when you soft step twice. As an example let’s say there’s a shortage of 7 irons in stiff flex I could simply order either a XS 5 iron or a regular flex 9 iron to install in the 7 iron head and it will play very similar to that of the original 7 iron stiff shaft. Now I would never really do this in a real world application for a single shaft, but could. In general if you soft step or hard step the whole set moves up or down the same increments. The only exception to this would be with either you wedges or the lower lofted irons so think like bookends. In fact this might be my next test soft stepping a 5 or 4 iron.
