🗡 Distal is a high-fantasy d20 RPG focused on hardships, not heroes. Growth is fueled by the trials you endure during life as adventurers, and modern mechanics support a mix of tactical combat and cooperative storytelling.
** Things we care about... **
💠 Backstories that are fun to create and relevant to the story.
💠 Decisions that are meaningful, and near-death experiences that leave lasting scars.
💠 Characters that are expressed mechanically as well as narratively.
** Noteworthy Mechanics **
💠 Deathmarks are permanent scars gained with each brush with death. Accrue too many and face the sweet forever-sleep. Scars harden you, as well, making you less likely to fall in the future.
💠 Trials mark a character's progression. Undergo trials by enduring remarkable hardships, navigating no-win situations, or overcoming harrowing challenges. These are experiences, not experience points.
💠 Monsters use behaviors, not actions. This makes them easy to build and run encounters with, more fun to fight against, and gives each monster a unique place in the world.
💠 Willpower Die can be added to missed attacks or failed checks. Slaying enemies restores this combat-only resource, building momentum through a fight, and avoiding the dreaded cleanup phase.
💠 Armor buffers are rolled to reduce incoming damage. Rolling a 1 on an armor buffer reduces the die size by a step, and rolling a 1 on a d4 compromises the armor until repaired. Preventing damage is way more useful than healing it, in Distal.

Good luck! Since the Daggerheart critique video I've been keeping an eye on Distal, as it just feels it has its focus on the right parts to make stories and encounters meaningful, compared to some other d20 systems I've looked at (either 5e alterations or new systems altogether) that mostly focus on 'quicker combat = more narrative'. I'm very excited to see where this goes! Only realized today that you are the same Wrel from when I watched PS2 videos, so additionally good luck with the rebranding, as I can imagine the algorithm is not very forgiving!

No solo rules, unfortunately. I know it's something a lot of folks enjoy, but I don't have much experience with, myself. I'd like to look into it more once the base game is done.
