Adam Devlin is an underrated guitarist from the 90s, he doesn't really stand out on album tracks but if you listen to the Bluetones live stuff you really see how good he is.

I've got a story about my first debut album I made at college! I remember going into college wanting to create a stone roses like album and I came up with the unique chorus bright jangly sound and it felt amazing! I made the songs and was so happy with it. like you way with the chords I practically did the same thing! for one of the songs with the sound I remember my teacher tried editing it but when I played it back the chorus bright sound was gone and i didn't like the change so I mixed it myself and got the sound back it's so beautiful and my absolute favourite

Nice watch man though I’m surprised you didn’t mention Squire’s ‘favourite chord’. Or at least one he leans on a lot which is the open position D5. He plays a lot in and around the edges of that on this record. Waterfall and This is The One being the main examples. I’ve always thought if there’s a tangible chord or technique that defines this record it’s improvising around that chord. Just my take,

He played the major sevenths shapes or he played the Hendrix style of barre chords where he frets the low e with his thumb

E Minor with pentatonic minor shape at 7th fret would be B Phrygian (without the notes that make it Phrygian).

B minor pentatonic actually has notes all contained in the E minor scale, so actually he was playing in the correct key (E minor), he just used F# which is in E Minor but not E Minor pentatonic.

There's an interview with Ian Brown where he goes through the first album and talks about who wrote the lyrics to what, pretty even from what i remember, compared to the second album where John Squire wrote basically everything.

This... I've never seen that interview and have lived my life desperate to know who wrote the lyrics to both the album's... It's crazy how little info there is on it... The first album's lyrics are so incredibly singular, really intelligent, grown up and ethereal... The second album's lyrics are very different, far less imaginative and not particularly original, though this fits the more traditional heavier rock sound they achieve on that album, then we have the seahorses and solo stuff and listening to Ian's output I came to the conclusion that he couldn't have written much of the first album as his solo lyrics are, to me, basic as hell, no way he could have written the poetic stuff on that album... That said as time went on Johns lyrics also devolved into rock cliche, culminating for both in the aberrations of the reformed roses two singles which were disgraceful, lyrically speaking... Don't get me wrong I'm a devotee of the lads, I love both albums and bits of their other stuff but the mystery of their forever declining lyrical skills is a case I've been trying to crack since 95... That first album is unbelievably brilliant
