DADGAD Tuning - fingering for 24 chords of the Circle of Fifths To get started, most of the chords can be made with two simple finger positions, with small variations for using minor chords. Example: A - xx2242 and Am xx2232 or A - xx7677 and Am xx7577 You might see performers using this tuning and applying the middle finger to the top bass strings on some chords where I have it as xx (looks like they're giving the bird) There are other ways to make these chords, but these are the simplest. After learning these you will be able to play Pachelbel's Canon, or Hotel California with ease. Fingerstyle picking is fun too! D - xx0200 or xx7797 G - 55oo2o (big stretch needed) or xx5455 C - x32032 or xx5575 F - xx3233 or xx10101210 Bb - xx3353 or xx8788 Eb - xx1011 or xx99119 Ab - xx1131 or xx6566 Fm - xx3133 or xx10101110 Cm - x32o31 or xx5565 Gm - xx5535 or xx12121112 Dm - ooo201 or oo7787 Am - xx2232 or xx7757 Em - xx2022 or xx99109 Bm - xx4454 or xx9799 F#m - xx4244 or xx11111211 C#m - xx6676 or xx1191111 G#m - xx6466 or xx13131413 Ebm - xx8898 Bbm - xx3343 or xx8688 Db or C# - xx6686 Gb or F# - xx4344 or xx11111311 Cb or B - xx4464 or xx9899 E - xx2122 or xx99119 A - xx2242 or xx7677 Scales are a bit different in DADGAD, but that is for another lesson. Cheers! and Your Welcome!

I think the real magic of this happens when: 1) you use the whole step interval between the G and high A strings and find scales that use adjacent strings for each note. This gives the effect of a piano with the sustain pedal held down. Pierre Bensusan plays exclusively in DADGAD and uses this technique in almost every song to achieve incredibly rich melodies. I believe he even has a tutorial about it. 2) you use DADGAD to begin playing in other keys and get "painted into a corner" harmonically. you will wind up either discovering something incredible, or else hammering out what you really want: either way, it is great chops for building musicality. 3) you find that the outside chord shapes lend themselves almost supernaturally to resolving as IVminor-I, rather than V-I Serious inspiration time: Vicki Genfan, Pierre Bensusan, Tony McManus Thanks, Tom!

100% agree. But it is an easy, fast and kind of fun way to play major and minor chords.
@oneeyemonster32626 жыл бұрын
I dont have problems strumming chords and I just started yesterday.lol That's becuase Im used too strumming chords in E MAJOR/C# minor in standard tuning. ( I'll let the 4 outside strings ring open...ect) It gives it a dreamy sound,,,I just make simple DIADS on the middle D and G string accordingly in E MAJOR....if I get lost...If I hit any of the 4 outside string it'll just have weird chords names...that's all...Im on the GUITAR not the PIANO...C# min/b13 or whatever.... But I was also familar with drop D already...Doing all kinds metal riffs. I kept the top 2 strings the same...so I can play SOLO...that's all. If you study the fret board in standard tunning in C MAJOR/A min You can BARR across the 10th fret... In D ADG AG....the 3 out strings simply got tuned down a WHOLE STEP. A is the 4th or INVERTED 5th of D ( Pure tones) Im just going to play the middle 3 strings in D MAJOR/Bmin or F MAJOR/Dminor or D dominant I also know other scales...( all 12 notes work.lol) example....Lets say Im in D MAJOIR for the Middle 3 strings....Im just going to pick it....becuse it sounds totally cool.... Im going to KEEP it SIMPLE STUPID...and just play the DIAD of whatever chords.....B , b3....C#, b3.....D. Maj3....ect PUSHING DOWN from D MAJOR... b3 = D melodic min.......Im simply going play the b3 to modulate.lmao b6 = D Harmonic MAJ....reach over and play the Bb note.lol b3, b6 = D HArmonic Minor The DOMINANT...Im just going to make the hendrix chord shape 1, 3, b7...... These are possible MAJ and minor modes... Mix #2, #4 Phrygian b4 Loc b4 In other words...I dont have a problem mixing the b3 or Maj3 from the TONIC.lol B harmonic min b2......That would be the C MAJOR diad Loc b4.... Dorian with a LEADING TONE also = Melodic min D# loc b4 into E harmonic min.lol or D# min diad To make chords on the top side...that's easy The 5th A string is now the 5th ...yes??? Counting from the ROOT from the D string....just make a DIAD b3 or Maj3 from The old standard tuning shape Maj7 = MAJ Dominant = min.lol Sus4 = min or like this D.....................,R A......................5...............................5 G..........b3..3...4..................b3..3 D.....................R................................R A.....................5 D.....................R A.............R.........,2..b3....3 G.........................R D.........................5 A.............R.....

Tried playing these after the video and realized that for many of the chords you can just leave the low D open and play an E shape for the major chords and drop your index finger down one fret for the minors. i.e. A would be 077600 and A minor would be 077500. To really play it open you can just use the 3rd and 4th strings for several chords. Nice.

I gave up every time...Until i met a guy who said he'd teach me...He re-tuned my rather old battered acoustic to open G...An hour later i'm playing a song..not perfectly but not badly either..A few chords and i could concentrate on rhythm and timing .. Eventually i learned to play in standard tuning..but still play most of the time in an open tuning. I have one acoustic and a strat in standard..all the others are open tuned..Including of course my CBGs. I do lessons sometimes and always start people off in an open tuning..Not many give up like they do trying to learn in standard tuning..And who doesn't like sounding like Mr Richards..? I actually find playing in standard tuning a bit boring at times..

I've been experimenting with open tunings since I saw your Open D videos and I've found some fun things in Open Gm as well! But could you explain why one would prefer this tuning over Open D tuning or vice versa when they're so similar and we're playing the same chords just with the G string moved up/down one fret?
@TomStrahle6 жыл бұрын
I think Open D has a definite major tonality whereas DADGAD is more ambiguous and could easily go either way. DADGAD is more modal. When playing the chords I teach in the two "Play Most Any Song" videos they are very similar. But this allows you to keep playing your set of music without changing tunings or guitars.

Also handy, when not needing all the jangly open strings, is a simple DADGAD barre chord: if you're playing the basic D chord (all open except fret the third string at the second fret), just do the same thing for other chords by fretting all six strings and fretting the third string two frets up. G chord = fret all strings at the 5th fret, plus fret the third string at the 7th fret, for example. Quick and easy way to work other chords into it without worrying about whether they'll work or not.

I'd love to learn to play in some alternate tunings, this would be a good place to start!😁 You mentioned a fast way to transpose, I used to apply the numbers to the progression, then pull the correct letters from the scale of the new key to transpose, but I found a much faster way-- just count the steps from the key you're in to the key you're going to, and then do the math for all the chords 😉💖 Example: C to F is 4 , A to C is 3, etc-- so if you're in C, going to F, add 4 to all the chords in your original key, and boom, you're there! Granted, you have to know the scale, to get the sharps n flats right, and understand how the numbers work, but once you get the hang of it, you can transpose REALLY fast! I can use an app like Chordify, where the progression is on the screen and moves in time to the music they're playing, and actually play the song in a different key simultaneously,even ones I've never played before ! It's a REALLY useful trick, and I've never heard anyone else ever talk about it!😁💖

@TomStrahle6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I wouldn't want to do a whole set that way. It would drive me crazy too. But it's cool for a new take on a song. The chords of Teen Spirit sounded pretty cool on my Open D video. Yes, that's some foam I put under the strings on many of my instruments. I spend most of my days doing session work and recording and that prevents harmonic overtones behind the nut when I play short or choked chords. Cleaner tracks that way.

Very cool! Check out the Ben Howard tuning if you havent already it's CGCGgc. Like most open tuning it's super simple, wish I knew it when I first started. Really makes it easy to get strumming chords right off the bat.

I will totally check that out. Thanks!

The F# sounds horrible, even in context. Love the rest. I have been wanting to get into DADGAD for a while cause it sounds so beautiful, and I am Scottish and love the sound. Thanks for going through each chord and letting me hear the notes of them together one at a time so I can hear it better rather than it going y quick in a song. I am ready to do this now. I am going to do a country solo acoustic thing and some of the songs will break down and sound way better in this tuning.

Yeah, that one was a stretch.

It makes sense though because that odd harmonic dissonance is a common trick for Weezer in their music. Nice video btw man, solidified some ideas for me in DADGAD

Yeah, I didn’t know which songs I was going to do. I tried to chose songs that had a variety of chords. That one turned out pretty cool.
