For whatever it's worth, I've been using a Genki ShadowCast with my Samsung Chromebook Pro, and latency hasn't been an issue, at all. Audio sometimes lags for the first 30 seconds or so, then it catches up with itself and I have absolutely no lag, and that's setting it to prioritize quality over performance. Last night I was using it with my PS3 playing Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, no issues.

I was Kickstarter backer, which I rarely do these days, but since it was already an established company took the chance. I had some reservations too considering the specks, the biggest gripe being the usb 2.0, but really the price is what did it for me. I don't need high end capture card for the occasional casting to discord/twitch for friends to watch games like ACNH or secondary input video from my DSLR. The latency has been very minimal when playing games like Tetris or MarioKart but it is there, and yes when timing is critical it can be an issue. I have an HDMI splitter lying around so that might be my bypass solution to another monitor/tv if I ever needed to worry about latency. Genki's software is very basic and strangely I had to hunt for it online as it wasn't obvious in the manual where to go. One note is that don't actually need any software, it's viewable through a browser. It does work better via OBS. Genki threw in some stickers as some kind of bonus freebie, which they were all hyped about the artist, I didn't care much for them. I did find it amusing how the funding tiers included limited edition yellow vs black casing. Not that you can actually see it plugged inside the back of the Switch dock. I'm happy enough with the device. You get what you pay for, a very basic capture card, which is worth it's price for casual usage.

The portable dock has given me no problems when bringing it to gatherings and is a great party feature. But the use case for converting my laptop into a screen just doesnt feel like an item realistically needed for the Switch. How many times do you find yourself saying “I wish I could use my laptop to play my Switch on”? Its a cool idea that a niche audience may be interested in. But it doesnt seem like they executed on it effectively enough. This is based upon several reviews. I have both one of these, and an Elgato Cam Link 4K, and if I'm being honest, no matter what purpose you're trying to use this for, something like a cam link is just better if you want much higher video quality, and if you're trying to be budget conscious then a generic one is much cheaper with very similar quality. Also, if you find out down the road that you need or want the pass through functionality added to something like this, or a cam link, an HDMI splitter will add on just fine. Edit: Also, I found the cam link lower latency in the first place, which was interesting, but I can definitely say that the quality of the video is basically like a native connection. Also, my use case for the Cam Linm is as a sort-of HDMI audio in (using windows "listen to this device), which is VERY low latency, and then also streaming my video as a webcam via discord for friends to see when I'm playing something in a call with them
@karjuho_2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment, I have been looking for someone to compare this to Elgato Cam Link. How much better is the Cam Link latency, compared to shadowcast? Is games like Mario Kart and BotW playable on Cam Link without problems or do you notice the lag?
@Spike-bk6np2 жыл бұрын
@@karjuho_ It's better, but still not perfect. For something like Mario Kart it's probably still usable to "play in a window", the same applies to BotW most of the time, but if you're trying to perfectly time a dodge it could be a bit challenging. Recently I just tested it again just navigating a menu and I could tell there was lag compared to a direct connection, but sometimes TVs that have signal processing are worse than what I experienced. Really, the biggest difference I noticed was just that the Cam Link was WAY better looking than the shadowcast. I personally still use the Cam Link since it's versatile, and haven't touched my shadowcast in forever.

What Genki had done right with the marketing is that they didn't mention the word "capture cards" and just said that it was a way to play switch games con computers, and believe o not a lot of people don't know what is a capture card, but they know the name Genki and wanted a way to use the computer like a screen for their switch. It's a good little device to have if you're on the move a lot and want to be able to have a larger screen to go.

thanks a ton Bob for mentioning EposVox's vid regarding cheaper capture cards. I bought one a few months ago for $15 and searched everywhere for a video trying to troubleshoot it. Thanks! :D

Sticking with the Elgato Game Capture 4K60 Pro MK, too good to be true that a $50 device by Genki could compare to a $250 device from Corsair.

What I REALLY want is someone to come out with something like this, that has an app like zoom, so I can play switch games with my mom and sister such as animal crossing. Also FYI. I play my switch on my stream via the avermedia recentral desktop app and I rarely ever notice latency.

@@KJasonV not the same lol. A lot of switch games are solo. It’s fun to play them side by side so we can see each others screens.

You have 2 methods. Rig up your switch to a PC with parsec application and a Titan 1 adapter so second player from far away can play with you. Or simple method, just use a PC by itself. Download switch emulator and use parsec.

You wouldn't believe me, but its funny. I thought of this a few days before this video even came out. I thought to myself, I wish there was a console I can plug and play with. I mean, I know the switch doesn't need computer support, but wouldn't it be unique to have it? So thank you, for this great video! Have a great day!

So, stupidly enough, they do have more options for quality, but it's hidden behind a "passcode". Press (as arrow keys for directions) "up up down down left right left right b a" and the "mode" option turns into "resolution" and "framerate". Resolution gives you options ranging from 640x480 to 1920x1080 and framerate from 10 fps to 60 fps, so you can actually force 1920x1080 at 60 fps. Edit: Also just tested on my OBS, at least on my end it seems like input lag is more in OBS than in the genki app. Tbh probably a settings issue but when I tested using hollow knight, I was able to flick my left joystick to take a step and already have it centered or pretty darn close to centered again before the little guy moved. Although, that was with 1920x1080 @ 60fps (was the same with having fps set to 30 and to "match output", seems the issue was the resolution when in OBS preview), when I lowered it to 1280x720 @ 60fps the input lag seemed to lower to be similar to in the genki app. In the genki app though, after "unlocking" the extended graphical settings and having it maxed at 1920x1080 @ 60fps, input lag was still mildly noticeable but significantly less than on OBS and, at least by my standards, "playable".

Before I watch the video, I just wanna say that I’ve had a shadowcast for a while, and I noticed that the lag is significant on switch but it’s fine on PS5. Anyways I’m glad to see you making a video on it

I've got one of these plugged into an HDMI switcher and a splitter that runs to my TV. Really easy to plug it into my laptop if I ever decide I want to capture footage or screenshots on systems like the PS3 or SNES Mini. I think it's pretty handy.
@magictoast153 жыл бұрын
I have one and for my purposes, it’s perfectly fine. I’ve been using it to play Kingdom Hearts on PS3 and record Animal Crossing footage. The only time the lag has been bad enough in performance mode that it bothered me was while trying to play Mario Kart 8 online.

Like EposVox talks about, this thing is basically just a clone of those cheap unbranded Chinese USB capture dongle, which are also just about half the price at about $20 or less. And it's probably why it has all those shortcomings, like only being USB 2.0. Because that's all those $20 ones can do. Anyone who wants the Genki Shadowcast should just get a cheap unbranded Chinese USB capture dongle, and put the money they saved towards a more robust and versatile capture device from Elgato or Avermedia.

Not necessarily my use, since I already have an Elgato for this, but my friend and I like to call while the other goes villager hunting in ACNH, and we like to screenshare it on Discord. She's never been able to do it, so this could be a cheap solution for this, since she doesn't stream so an Elgato wouldn't be worth it to her. Most uses are pretty niche I'd imagine, stuff kinda like this, but I think it's good to have a decent capture card for kinda cheap for casual kinda stuff
@micky2be3 жыл бұрын
Got it from Kickstarter. It's working. That's the best review I can give. Also owning the Elgato HD60s, so having the Genki ShadowCast is definitely a downgrade. Appreciate the price, and mostly got it for travel so I can play Switch games on a bigger screen (laptop), but that's the end of it. A bit useless as a capture card due to latency and resolution limitations (ps4, ps5, xbox, ...)
