That darn chord after the chorus just before the line, "....lay down the boogie and play that funky music 'til you die" doth elude me no more! Thank you, Justin - you're a gent.

I think that it's actually happening with a first fret mini-bar on the top 3 strings with the open D - the same Bb9 top chord tones. Why? Well first it's easier to play but there's also a hammer-on in there from Eb to F on the D string which would not work with the fingering Justin is using (minor 7 b5 shape).

Way to go Justin, this really takes me back, a l l the way back to high school. This is one of the first songs I actually learned with the first band I was in. 1976 and I was fifteen. We looked at the video of this for a solid week to try to learn the chords and we did! That was back when there was no internet to show you how to play songs... All the 9 chords, I think that's why anything 9 is my favorite chord...Ha! Great Lesson Justin!

Any chance you could do a tutorial on how to get a good funk tone out of your guitar/amp?
@af2w131f7 жыл бұрын
I'd say get a good American Strat(if you have enough money) and change out the pick-ups. You can see his bridge pickup in this video has been changed out to some boutique humbucker type. Fender's pickups are noisy beasts that destroy the tone. Then second thing is get a nice amp. Amp and pickups are where the tone comes from, also of course you need some guitar skill but you already knew that!
@tonykennedy84836 жыл бұрын
He's playing a Suhr strat, it comes with the humbucker
@SaxJockey6 жыл бұрын
@@tonykennedy8483 In the video of Wild Cherry playing this on KZbin, both guitarist have Les Pauls (Humbuckers). I somehow associate funk music with a Strat.
@SaxJockey6 жыл бұрын
@John Smith Yes, even a basic Squier Standard and a modest Fender amp will do nicely.
@ramseydawg5 жыл бұрын
Why is the E9 chord so fricken hard to play. My ring finger is genetically incapable of barring the first three strings and my middle finger keeps muffling the 4th string. I hate you Justin. Just kidding. Great video! Out of all the people making vids, this by far is one of the best.
@nickarmage83115 жыл бұрын
Little secret...play dom9 chords on the 4 inner strings (like he showed for the E9 in this tune) with all 4 fingers first and get the feel for that solid and then the ring finger will naturally start to lay flat (after 2000 times) and cover all 3 of the high strings freeing the pinky finger up to move up 2 more frets on the high E string. That fingering is all over jazz and blues tunes which is where I started.

Great job Justin! Great sound and very funky. I have a new Tele with Medium Jumbo frets. I am used to the 1970s thin wire frets. It's harder to slide chords across the fretboard. Does your Strat have med-jumbos and have you had any problem with that at first? I guess you just get used to it right?
