And the way Gary Tallent locks in with Max Weinberg's bass kick is part of The E Street Band's signature sound. Really, there are times when the bass guitar and bass drum sound like a single instrument.

Thank you for what you do! I'm an old guy 64, grew up just playing with feel. Didn't learn the technical terms for things I did on Bass naturally thru osmosis. Just grew up hearing Jamerson, McCartney, Jack Bruce, Jack Casady, etc... Always trying to balance the Instinctual and music theory. Every now and then a younger person wants me to "teach me to play Bass". Usually they're more inclined to like more frenetic and frantic overly-aggressive "black metal"- type music, show-off type music. I say "learn the basic patterns and the theoretical mathematics structure and learn how the Bass is a more subtle approach to influence the song underneath the show-off guitars. All but one thinks I'm "being a buzzkill " because they want to constantly show off their chops instead of Serving the Song through Subtlety. I watch your lesson vids because as an old school Bass player I know I have old bad habits. Some of these younger wannabe-players just seem to want to show off, but some of them get it. Some do not. We didn't have KZbin lessons back when I was younger. We just had the records and Instinct. Thank you for your lessons!

Thanks for this. I've been playing this bass part with my band for about five years now, but your description has added useful musical context to the way I play it.

What do you think of flat wound strings? I noticed a lot of string noise on this video. It's not a problem for me, but I know flat wounds are quieter.
