I did too lol. It took me so long to be able to strictly alternate pick. Doesn't feel natural at all to me.

I think it’s totally normal. People just naturally adapts to the more comfortable way for them personally to do things. Some might find economy more comfortable some might not. Some might even find both of them natural.

I always intuitively did this and only learned the term a few years after playing way back. Still can't alternate pick that great (on fast/longer runs I mean, otherwise I kinda alternate between the two), feels unnatural.

I learned the "brake" technique for eco picking and now my world is changed.
@DylanAyalaGtr3 ай бұрын
What is this?
@EL_DUDERIN03 ай бұрын
@@DylanAyalaGtr Something I learned from Rick Graham where when you "sweep" to the next string, you actually hit the next string with your pick while muted but you don't pluck it immediately, but instead use the string to stop your motion before you continue picking it with the follow through. It makes it so that you can keep your timing and also keep your notes articulated individually if that makes sense. (Rick explains it very well but I couldn't find the video right now or if its cool to link it here)
@redshiftdrifter3 ай бұрын
@@DylanAyalaGtr If you're familiar with the Rest Stroke in classical guitar it's basically the same thing except it's your pick coming to rest against the next string you'll be picking. It eliminates the awkward hovering of the pick in no-mans-land between strings and really comes into play at ultra high speeds.

Curious as to what type of pick is being used. It looks rather thin and I'm wondering if that facilitates the technique.

I'm an old school metal guitarist and I know that the shred community are big on economy picking. But did economy picking even exist in the early days of rock & metal ? In other words, did 70's & 80's rock and metal guitarist such as Richie Blackmore, Glen Tipton, KK Downing, Randy Rhoads, Rudolf Schenker, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith use this technique ? I'm going to guess that the answer is a hard No. And when you consider the multitudes of epic solos that were played using alternate picking, then I have to question, if alternate picking was good enough for them then why isn't it good enough for the rest of us ?
@marcusmeira5594Ай бұрын
Alternate picking is good enough on its own, but that’s not the point. Economy picking is another tool in the toolbox. It makes some runs more comfortable for me, makes a few impressive sounding things easier and more consistent. It’s not a mandatory technique by any means, but I’m glad I practice it.

I wish people would spend more time on playing and thinking how to play, instead of thinking how and why give name to everything that exist. I know its not your inventions but people more and more want to know „what to do here and what to do somewhere else” when they learn how to play instead of figuring stuff themselves and actually… learn.
