PLAY WITH PURPOSE! MONTESSORI ACTIVITY IDEAS FOR BABIES 9-10 MONTHS OLD | MONTESSORI AT HOME | Maria and Montessori
Are you looking for developmentally appropriate, engaging, and educational activities for your infant? Trying to raise a curious, engaged, and independent baby? Then this video is for you!
Discover some of the Montessori materials and Montessori activities that have been a staple for us in the 9-10 month period! We focus on developing motor skills, coordination, preparing for walking, learning practical life skills, object permanence, language skills, and so much more! Not looking to buy more toys? No problem! Some of these activities can be created with items around your house or nothing at all! Stick around to find out how!
This time, I have decided to take on the Lovevery Comparables video in the format of presenting Montessori activities for the 9-10 month age range. As the Lovevery boxes progress, they're straying further and further from the Montessori timeline and Montessori style materials. The skills worked in those activities can be found in a variety of true Montessori materials, a collection of which is presented in this video. If you're interested in seeing a Lovevery Comparable guide video, definitely let me know, and I would still be happy to make it!
As mentioned in the video, your child's journey will be different from ours. These activities may be just right or too easy or too hard for them at this age range. The beauty of Montessori is following the child, and presenting the material when they're ready! Many of these Montessori activities will continue to be relevant for babies 11-12 months of age, but there will be additional Montessori materials to tackle then as well, so stay tuned for that video!

That's still one of our favorite activities as well! 😂 All exploration starts through the mouth...but eventually, with a lot of redirection and modeling from mom, we can get some moments of working with the materials as intended 🙈 There are very specific moments in the day when she is willing to work and not just try to eat everything-typically right after mealtime, so she's not hungry 😄

Wow, she's great!! My 9 months old girl doesn't want to play on her own much 😢 plus she loves to empty her baskets, not put anything back in them ... And she puts everything in her mouth too. I guess she's not too great of a Montessori student for now 😅

All things we did at 9 months as well 🙂 There's no such thing as a great Montessori student, just the right environment and adult prepared appropriately for thw child's current needs! Independent play at 9 months isn't going to happen often, but the right activity could keep them focused just long enough. I have a separate video on how to support independent play. Exploring containment and dumping things out is also appropriate at this age-but any time she did this, I'd model putting things back in and invite her to do the same, so she could dump again. Resetting the activity became interesting to her with time. Mouthing goes away at different times for different kids-we still put plenty of toys in the mouth at 9 months too. Of course those aren't the helpful moments to show what an activity can look like! But I promise you those musical instruments, blocks, and all the animals figurines got mouthed in between moments of focus. Again just kept modeling what we can do with the items and when needed, offered a teether as a safer option if the item of interest shouldn't be mouthed!

@@MariaandMontessori thank you for such valid tips 😇 I guess it all looks good on the pictures, hahah, but in reality life isn't as easy. Yes I do model the desired behaviour, to help her get the idea but she has a mind of her own, lol. She's focused more on gross motor skills, she basically started pulling herself up and standing before she sat down on her own. She's crawling for a long time now and walking alongside everything very quickly, keeping her focused for a few minutes on any activity that is still is a true miracle, haha. I've made her a permanence box myself and she already almost destroyed it, she's a small rebel, taken after her dad I guess 😁 But I'm persistent and I won't give up, right now I focus on getting her as independent as she can be and hopefully some other abilities will cam later 😊 I'll look up your other video, thank you once again for taking the time for such a great reply. Sending hugs from Poland 🤗

We absolutely have those days too. There's days when she is 100% into her shelf and days when she avoids it the entire day or only stays long enough to take everything out and leave. This is especially true when she's working on a gross motor skill, so while she was pulling to stand and right now as she masters walking. I've found she has specific windows when she is more willing to engage with the materials (right after breakfast and right after lunch) so if I show her a work in a very excited manner, that is usually my best chance of getting her to focus on it and potentially explore other works. Other times, a change of scenery works too-bringing materials out to the yard on a picnic blanket makes them 10x more interesting for her!

Hello how to explain to the baby how to play with this toys because my baby she puts everything in her mouth
@MariaandMontessori

Model! Show them very slowly how to do it. But also know that it is very developmentally appropriate and necessary for them to mouth at this age. It is one of the best ways they learn about the world. Most of the toys & materials I showed here also got their fair share of being mouthed 😅 I just continued to slowly guide her hands back to do hand over hand and show how to use the item. Unless it was something that can't be mouthed for safety like her diapers or some of the painted wooden pieces that I wasn't sure if they'd peel-those would be redirected to hand over hand right away. If she wasn't interested in that, I'd offer her an option that she CAN safely mouth or see if she's hungry!

Did you teach her how to do this or did she figure this out all on her own. I know many say not to direct your little one while they’re playing but what I find is that when my little one doesn’t “figure out how it works” she gets bored. Then when I try to show her, she fusses and falls out. I don’t force her because I want her to form a natural love for doing so, but I’m also wondering if she’s just gonna be bored with everything

Every activity was a bit different. Many things she picked up from observation, especially simple things like putting diapers into the basket of getting the cubes in and out of baskets. Others she stumbled across in her explorations. But if I saw an interest in something and she wasn't quite getting it figured out and THAT was causing frustration, I'd model it. Very slowly doing it once through, and then let her repeat if she wanted. Sometimes I offered hand over hand. In her infant days, she was much less receptive to it, but she did pick up on the fact that she can get more accomplished with a bit of help and was more willing to accept help as she got older. The rings on a dowel is one the would frustrate her because she couldn't get them on and she wasn't interested in seeing them. What I figured is she could understand what NEEDS to be done but was frustrated with her inability to do it independently. So I would rotate it in once in a while and keep offering it because it is definitely an important activity, but I made sure to have easier options in that rotation that she could turn to if she felt too frustrated after another "failed" attempt. If your little doesn't get an activity and isn't interested in seeing you do it, what does she end up turning to afterwards? That is what I used as my guide to figure out what she would actually be interested in. In our case, she would crawl to the pantry and start taking things out. That's where I could see she was interested in containment. And eventually I gave her a walking wagon and she would transport groceries around the home 😅 But because she showed that interest first, any activity we did around a similar concept was usually very well received.
