I can read music when playing guitar and always passed on this Bach piece though I play several other compositions of Bach. I have a ton of free time and I also practice mandolin as of late and haven't bothered to learn how to read music on it and haven't found a book to slowly learn. I want to learn how to read music for recorder and I think it'll be easier since I can with guitar. I cannot find a good book on Amazon for learning recorder and I tried to find a CD of your music but I need to look again. Anyway, thanks for the delightful videos! I'm a big fan already!

Thank you for this play along with one of my favorites. I had the opportunity to arrange this last Christmas for soprano recorder, cello, guitar, and piano! We did pretty well too. Thank you for leaving in the alto blip. When I heard it I was surprised but then, you are human and perfection must be tiring. 😍

I once knew a concert pianist who told me that if some pianists make a mistake recording, they simply cut out those incorrect notes and insert a couple of correct ones later. That was back in '74, so imagine how "perfect" and "polished" digital recording and editing technology would make a piece today.

@Denise-tg2ok6 жыл бұрын
I have a question. I currently play Flute and Oboe in Band Class and currently the recorder is just seen as a toy in there but, ever since I discovered this channel I've wanted to start seriously learning recorder when I go to music school. (I'm currently in 11th grade) and I was going to learn two recorders the one that matches the Flute and Oboe in Pitch and the one that matches the Piccolo in Pitch and I heard that It was the Soprano(Piccolo) and the Tenor(Flute and Oboe), and well then I said well does it match the range because concert band our music for flute Goes up to like C6-G6 and C6 for Oboe occasionally and C7-G7 for Piccolo and I wondered if I can just take out my recorders and just play my Flute and Piccolo music. Does the Range of the Tenor and Soprano even go near C6 and C7 respectively.

Hi Sarah, I am really enjoying your videos. I have got a burning question at the moment: how can you play top F# successful. It comes up in Brandenburgh 4. Many thanks, Vreni
@cilemusic77076 жыл бұрын
With a G baroque alto ! Oooops sorry... the top F# is always a bit tricky, you can try the fingering of your top G with the bell closed by your knee, and adjust the pitch with the pinky. The top F fingering with bell closed also works, but can be a bit flat. There is also an other one, not often used : play a top E, and quickly remove 1+2, this fingering works ONLY with a tie between top E and top F# and is often unstable (so not for the long notes), this is the fingering I use in the eighth notes passages of Brandenburg 4, even if it introduces an unusual tie.

My guess is at the end of measure 48 in the alto part between 7:30 and 7:35

Hi Sarah, lovely piece and idea but I seem to be having trouble getting IMSLP to play ball. I just seem to get a down load to change my settings in a way I do not want and no sign of a recorder arrangement of Jesu joy of man's desire which I do. I already have arrangements of this in 10 parts by Murray and published by OUP. Can I use that? What key is your arrangement in?
@sarahtoball26064 жыл бұрын
Don't click on the first banner you see on the page, that's a clickbait. scroll down a bit and you will see a text link. That will send you to a page that asks you to accept their terms and conditions, but it won't ask to change any of your settings. It takes you to the PDF.

Hi Sarah! I've been expecting this playalong sooo many time even without knowing it. :-) Last summer I was tackling this score on the soprano part. Question: what is the tempo of this playalong?

The score from the imslp link above shows the tempo as 90.

Thanks Don Bentley, nut 90 tripplets per minute is quite faster than Shara's performance. It could be 70?

Dear Sarah, in the score of your link I can't find '...the bit that the choir would sing' that you also play in your video (4:09). I think it should start in bar 9, but it is not there.
