He might have known Gavin was sick. I think a lot of his friends and family knew. That might be why he made sure to put in all these compliments. But truly it's hard to tell, everyone kind of always spoke about him like this.

But the way he spoke so lovingly about "the beautiful Gavin Creel...everybody loves Gavin" -- the same words his friends and colleagues used in their condolences -- made me think that was Borle's way of acknowledging his passing. Goes to show that he was as genuinely beloved in life as he was in death.

I was Christian's apartment-mate back in 1994 at West Virginia Public Theatre. He was 21 or 22 and cast in A CHORUS LINE (with an indescribably spectacular Laurie Gamache reprising her Broadway role as (the final) Cassie) and worried about the dancing (I was stage managing NUNSENSE in WVPT's smaller theatre). How far he's come! Congrats, Christian!

Just saw Christian in Tammy Faye and was blown away. He really brings it all in a role that calls for it all. Saw him in Some Like it Hot and Something's Rotten too--always brilliant, always physically surprising and emotionally wide-ranging. He's just a wonderfully watchable actor.

Seeing Christian in Peter & the Starcatcher was truly a magical experience. Seeing his face light up talking about Sutton was so beautiful and I'm actually glad to realize he recorded this before Gavin passed so this reverence wasn't washed over by sadness. What a special soul.

I was (and still am) a big Christian Borle fan. When I was studying musical theatre, I was constantly looking up footage of his performances and interviews he did. I was fortunate enough to have done an intensive with the American Theatre Wing in New York where he came in and spoke with us - after which we got a chance to see him in Something Rotten after he won the Tony. A class act.

I saw that revival of JCS in 2000 and HATED IT! And I love the musical. The costumes made everyone look like castaways from a regional production of Rent. Rather than contemporary, it made JCS feel like a past-its-prime show that was desperately trying to make itself relevant. So I LOVE that he fully acknowledges and embraces that it really was not very good. So few actors, especially B’way actors, seem willing to do that for fear of offending someone. I love that he just puts it all out there. What a great storyteller he is, too. I saw him in that production of Elegies with William Finn, Betty Buckley and Carolee Carmelo and thought he was great! This has been so much fun to watch.
