Why no backlight? It's not like people have nostalgia for the Game Boy's worse flaws...
@ligametis5 жыл бұрын
On such reflective, high contrast and perfect for direct sunlight display technology (like e-paper) usually there is no backlight and if there is some kind of light it is often placed around the sides. However, even though such illumination looks cheap I think they should incorporate at least something. Not being able to play in the dark is a too big compromise, for me that would be a deal-breaking drawback.

This looks pretty cool. I’ll wait until ends up on clearance for $20 though.

In defense of the price, that includes 12 games. If you think that’s still too much then fair enough, just saying I think that should be kept in mind.

It's actually 24 games, which are designed exclusively for the console. You're right, developer hours also cost money.

$150 for a small and extremely under powered system with no backlight? Lol no plus i can feel the hand cramps jus by looking at this thing

Yeah, I don't think I'll be getting this. For $100 maybe but it would have to have some kickass games

I actually love the idea of non standard controls... but devs are going to hate it when they just want to copy/paste to as many platforms as possible. Saw that with the gamecube when it had less buttons.
@Patr1ck23325 жыл бұрын
The design looks good, but the games too simplistic, less so even than an original game boy. I wonder what the directors faces were like in the meeting when Nintendo dropped the Switch Lite for only $50 more.

Would love to have it as a collectors item but couldn’t for that price

I love it, you can tell so much though has been put into it, which is so important. Its a great bit of fun without having to pull out your phone.

The people in these comments don't seem to understand that this is a niche product. I'm a game developer and I think Play Date is very interesting. You're paying for the novelty and the experience, and perhaps for a game that is totally new and original. Lots of fantastic artists will be making games for this thing. It's like a music album. If you just want to play dreck then this is not the device for you.

Game designer here, and I totally agree. This is a really great concept, and the fact that it’ll be so easy to make games for it is great. The idea of the games rolling out as seasons is also really interesting.

@Angel Rodriguez - I'm joking around. The Switch is better in every way apart from its portability. I'm assuming the Switch would be a tight fit for most people pockets.
@mr8I75 жыл бұрын
@Angel Rodriguez - I had a look around and it looks like you can just about do it but without a case. But then you risk damaging the fragile analogue sticks. Ideally you'd be able to fit a phone in one pocket and the Switch on another.

I get people arguing about the lack of backlight and the high price. But from what I understand, this was meant to be a little decoration piece that is also interactive. I don't think the intention was for it to be a good value proposition.

There's so much more they could be using the crank for than what they show. The ability to have 120 haptic clicks of input is a kind of precision that could lead to some cool gameplay concepts. The Playdate isn't the most powerful console, but with the right mechanic using the crank, there could be ideas here you'd wish were incorporated into AAA games. All that is if the crank even clicks like I'm thinking it does. If it's just rotates and there's no feedback to it, it's a little harder to picture how this is any different than an analog control stick.

Those 12 games are just some simple Game and Watch style games, the Switch has far more included in the free NES app alone. It's not like it has 12 games as complex as Mario Maker 2 lol.
