A ronin samurai is a swashbuckler. A Katana is a versatile 2/1 handed weapon. The theater of intimidation, the managing one's reputation and honor, and navigating shogunate court politics, are all big parts of the concept of the samurai. If you believe that any samurai worth their steel knows how to participate in a formal tea ceremony, then it fits within the swashbuckler's concept.

Another kind of Swashbuckler you can do: Xena the Warrior Princess! Her whole thing (besides being deadly as all hell) was cartwheeling all over the screen while doing that cracy cry of hers and making enemies shit themselves in fear. She does so much skill actions and finishers while fighting.

Just as a heads up: The Alchemist's versatile bottle reload does not use the refocus action. As per the text you automatically get back two bottles per 10 minutes of exploration, even if you do other stuff. It seems to be more like "I'll put this leaf, I just walked by, into a vial and let it simmer"

I always thought that the monk’s subclass was whichever stance they chose. They have such different traits and will usually have a feat or two to follow up at later levels. Some lean more into dex or str depending on if it has the finesse trait in the stance.

Yes. Crane, Tiger, and Wolf stances give you a DEX monk, while Dragon and Mountain give you a STR monk, and a Weapon monk could be either (I like Bo Staff for reach). Focusing on grappling or mobility can give you even more variety.

I like the Aesthetics of the Monk but hate how it's limited to unarmored punching people. Japan had tons of monasteries with armed warriors that in theme, feel close to a Monk, but had no trouble using weapons and armor. In a more fanastic setting, I hate how the weapons are set up. A Dwarf Monk or Elf Monk might use completely different weapons then a Human Monk. And that includes big weapons, like Dwarven War Axe, which isn't agile or have Finesse. I could totally see a Centaur Monk with a Lance as their "Monk" weapon.

@@gamesandstuff127 Elven monks do get the elven curve blade and the spiked chain can work tmeticly for some races but I concede your point. Limiting flurry of blows lowering the damage die by a step of D12, D10 and D8 weapons that don't have the finesse or agile trait would balnce monks using pretty much any weapon. (The two exmaples above are the only 2 D8 weapons that have agile and are efefctively necked down D10 weapons)

Disney Alladin could be a swashbuckler, like when he is running from the guards doing all fancy, mocking moves. (Fists/claws can be agile and finesse). Sinbad is a swashbuckler, Errol Flynn's Robin Hood, Zorro is obvious, and you could even do Catwoman with a whip.

Here's why I don't hate the Investigator class. a) I prefer skill-based, point buy RPG anyways. b) But whe I play a class/level game, to me the lines between Class, Archetype, and Background blurs pretty quickly. We've all seen a Pirate Pirate who has the Pirate Background at this point. c) In world, roleplay wise, this is how this character would be called in society.

For the monk, my issue is that some of my ideas for a character share some of the trappings of a monk, but not others. Like the Japanese Sohei feels a lot like a Monk, but traditionally, they had not issues using Armor, bows, being mounted or carrying weapons. The Champion is Sohei Adjacent, but the aesthetics feel more Monk then Champion.
