Really enjoyed this series. I recently purchased an AES on ebay, just to re-live those 90s glory days. Amazing how well they've held their value.

I didn't know much about the X, it was sort of like the Switch before the Switch.

@Mr-Fox, I appreciate it! Yeah, I already had some people mention that I should cover it. Need to track down one of those some day and cover it more in-depth.

Fantastic historical information about SNK & Neo Geo. I was well aware of the Neo Geo in the 90’s. I seen it in my video gaming magazines & in stores but passed on it in favor the Genesis, TG-16 & SNES as I simply felt the game releases were too few & far between. By the time I did move onto a more powerful system it would end up being the 3DO. Anyways I have a decent Neo Geo AES & MVS collection now which includes the Omega & Analogue CMVS Slim for my MVS collection and Japan & NTSC Neo Geo home consoles but like you said, it’s expensive. For anyone starting off AES collection give the common carts like early Japanese releases/versions of Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury, World Heroes & KOF 94 a go as they’re easy to come by, much cheaper and actually good games to play. MVS carts have increased a lot in just the past 3-4 years but still far less expensive than AES variants.

I really enjoyed this series! Just a suggestion, maybe edit all the parts into one giant video with chapters. I know I’d watch it all again in that format.

Yeah, it's very expensive and beyond my means. However...........😁..............😁... I got the neogeo mini, an HDMI to S-Video converter and now I can play them games as they were intended at a fraction of the cost all on one little neat looking arcade tabletop console on my Sony CRT. It looks, sounds and plays great.

Tell kids that 30 years ago there was this expensive console that let you have the arcade at home and get the response... "Whats an arcade?"

Great video but one comment. Stone Age Gamer didn't develop the SD cart - that was done by Terraonion. Stone Age Gamer is a terrific place to buy retro 'stuff' though!

I still have my Geo. Don’t have many games for it and I don’t think I bought a single one new, including the console. I got mine in 92 or 93 with the AES, two joysticks, a memory card, and Magician’s Lord and Fatal Fury 2 for $699.

@BillyBet YT, Nice! I would have loved to have one of these back in the day, but man that price point... How many times do you think you've died in Magician Lord? I lost count myself. 😅

@@PlayerOneStart I’m terrible at Magician Lord, I don’t think I’ve been further than the third stage lol, but I can still remember the first time I saw the arcade game, 5th street in North Philadelphia at Fat Jack’s Comic Crypt. At the time it was one of the best looking games I’d ever seen. This was still pretty early in the 16-bit era and the SNES was probably still 2 years away. I miss those days.

My first experience with SNK game was on another big failure system, 3DO. the game was samurai showdown. Like 3DO, SNK amongst other dead systems all one thing in common, piss poor management. Like you, I tried to find a unit, sadly all I found was a few examples on eBay which were used as frisbee’s. The four examples were scratched and dinged, making it a foolish gamble for me.

The 1988 Sega MegaDrive is actually a lower priced arcade hardware machine... that can obviously play home designed original games not suitable for arcade use... at least that was the Sega Japan headquarters initiative and not what later in the 1990s Sega of America turned the "Genesis" into some type of kiddie machine by rejecting, passing on, and refusing to localize many of the Sega MegaDrive home original games which could have been legit arcade games.. like say Eliminate Down, Alien Soldier, and GleyLancer among others. On that note it might be possible to argue that the Super FamiCom aka Super Nintendo was also another low cost arcade machine but initially the game devs needed to learn the hardware better to fully code the SNES CPU and graphics chips to really push the system but neither are on the same level as SNK NeoGeo hardware which was just straight arcade hardware with a home version that just didn't have the insert coin mode. Note that Nintendo used the NES and SNES as arcade machines and so did Sega with their MegaTech arcade machine similar to the jukebox design of the NeoGeo MVS arcade cabinets... Finally the Sony PlayStation had an arcade version that ran on rom storage chips soldered to the mainboard so you couldn't swap them however veteran arcade company Sega had their Sega Saturn based Sega ST-V aka Sega Titan Video arcade machine which was actually used more than the older MegaDrive based arcade machine bit in very weak response to how Sony had Namco, Capcom, Taito, Konami and others basically make original brand new IP arcade games that were running on PS1 hardware and could quickly converted to PS1... The Sega ST-V however was for stupid reasons, just not used enough as Sega's amusement divisions in Japan should have... other than the 32X causing damage to the Sega brand and the management staff at Sega of America having a bias to the 32X and dismissive attitude towards the Sega Saturn as a next gen path and there was no surprise why Sony PlayStation just earned gamers trust. The Nintendo 64 was supposed to have an arcade version too but that failed because of the unstable Sega of America wanting yo put pressure to make next generation jump which ended up costing Sega Japan headquarters multiple millions to develop and ended in a game system that was losing money and bringing Sega to bankruptcy. After that the Sony PS2 and later PS3 were used in arcade hardware version however the PS3 was not used as much as the PS2 was... which was a real shame as the decline of Japanese arcade game makers was happening and its worse because many of those arcade games in Japan never got converted to the PS3.

Megadrive was far less powered than the arcades and far smaller data for the games by the time it came out in the UK. I remember Golden Axe feeling like a proper arcade in the home though,
