Design Your Own Bohemian Crochet Scarf Pt. 1 - The Granny Squares

Hi friends, I hope you enjoy the video. This scarf is inspired by a lovely one sold in stores that can be used as a great resource to design your own. This is not an exact copy of the scarf but hopefully it will help give you some ideas. This week, I’m sharing how to make granny squares and next week will be all about the specialty stitches. That will be a fun one if you want to learn some new stitches for a sampler blanket or scarf! 💕

I’m so excited to make this even though I’ve only made a granny square once to see if I could lol. I organized my yarn and made a bag of scraps. I’m ready for this project. Not enough cotton yarn so I’ll be using acrylic.

This is something I want now! It's so cold outside. I was wondering about adapting this to a cowl or infinity scarf! The scarf I have, I have been wearing for 14 years. I had to make it in a hurry because I had just gotten a new coat, and stores didn't have anything to match with it. If I make this, I won't have to worry about color. It goes with everything! I absolutely luv this!! Can u use another yarn instead of cotton? Will it change the look if I used #4? I was trying to use the yarn I already have. Thx

Use whatever you love and have on hand. If it’s a number 4 weight it should be fine. I’d recommend you make the basic square and measure it. If it’s 3.5 to 4 inches square then it will match what you’re seeing in the video. But don’t let that hold you back from using what you have if it’s working bigger or smaller. It will just affect the sizing as far as the width. I’ll be showing how to adapt the stripes that join it all together next week. 👍🏻💕

I believe any worsted weight (#4 in the US) should give approximately the same size and a similar look. Even if you were using the exact yarn and hook as in the video you might get a different size because everyone’s tension is different.

First I need to say you are my crochet teacher and inspiration! My friend is making this scarf and was winging it with the boutique scarf. Your video came out perfect timing! I have a question regarding grannies. If my yarn calls for say a 4.00 mm hook for worsted weught cotton if I go down a hook size would it be smaller tighter denser stiches? I am still new to grannies and crochet in general! Do you have a video that explores crotchet concepts like that? ❤

Oh good, I’m glad this video came at a good time 👏🏻😀 That’s exactly right, if you’re using a smaller hook then it’s just going to make your stitches tighter and the finished piece slightly smaller. For example my yarn calls for a 5mm but I prefer to use a 4mm because I want the stitches to be tighter and the square smaller 👍🏻 sometimes I’ll go higher than the recommended hook size if I need it to be bigger or looser. I've been crocheting since 1973! I do beautiful work and can crochet anything after all these years 😻😻Granny squares have always been and remain my favorite thing to do. I have books and books of different granny square patterns. So fun and so satisfying. 💗💗Happy Crocheting💗💗
