Playing 20 Different CD/DVD Formats With AI Assistance

I'm using AI to help me play back 20 different CD/DVD disc formats in five different vintage players. The "AI Disc Detector" uses a Raspberry Pi 5 and a Pi Pico along with a webcam, motor, and OLED display in an old coffee maker. As I go through the history of each disc format and the machine that plays it back, I'll be interspersing bits about how the Disc Detector works.

KZbin just randomly recommended this and a brilliant proof of concept! I wonder if with good servos and some creativity an omni disk player would be possible to put together. Also what a great idea to use the coffee maker. Makes it look like something out of a sci fi show.

Absolutely BONKERS! I LOVE IT! This is such a crazy project! I also love physical media. I had an HDCD chip in a LINN CD player bought back in 2002 and I currently have a Marantz SACD Player. There are a few other "formats" you missed such as Blu-Spec Audio discs UHQCD, K2HD. and then Mini-Disc.There are also the various tape formats such as DAT. SACD is a fantastic format and really should've become the industry standard. You can still pick up HDCDs at reasonable prices. For some weird reason a number of HDCD discs were produced that did not feature the HDCD logo neither the disc or the packaging! It's amazing just how many formats were launched in such a short period- inevitably the majority were doomed to fail and as you mention most were obsolete before they had a chance to catch on with the public. Hitching your wagon to the "wrong" format could end up costing folks a lot of cash for very limited returns. Really enjoyed your video- lots of fun- that repurposed coffee machine really is something else man!

20:04 funny thing about that... the original HD-DVD players *WERE* a PC in a box. they were the size of a VCR and housed a pentium 4 PC running a custom linux OS.

Great Idea and video. One Suggestion, add a Laserdisc detection. You don't need AI. Just put an impact detector to the coffee machines case. When the LD hits the case, it has to be an LD (or Vinyl, but that's not optical), just because it doesn't fit 🙂.

I remember back in the days of using AOL Chat Rooms I grabbed my OffSpring "Americana" CD and popped it into the CD-ROM drive....I had no clue that it was an Enhanced CD or that Enhanced CD was even a thing. It took me by surprise....was pretty cool even though my 486 computer couldn't really handle it very well....

You should open a company and merge with a SPAC, your stock will go to the moon, an actual, legitimate AI product that works out of the box and has a finished prototype? That’s more than most current AI companies have to offer.

Cool gadget, Though you can narrow down your player count to just two and able to play them back all, A HD-DVD drive for HD-DVDs and an UHD drive for everything else in a custom computer.

I’m gonna cry if you got that Sony UHD player at a garage sale because I just paid almost $400 for that exact one within the last year. I bought it for UHD but also for SACDs I had a Marantz DVD player from 2008 for my SACDs finally decided to die. It also replaced my low end LG UHD player. I wish I knew you were making this video. I would’ve donated a laserdisc player to you.

As cool as it sounds, I really can't see where the use of AI would be necessary. All you need is to read the disk header and check the format with a simple 10 lines of C code.

I didn't think I needed to collect (at least) one of each type of disc, but now I do. I know i have at least CD, CD+G (Information Society), DVD-Audio (Koyaanisqatsi), DVD, and CD Video... time to track down more! :D (just sub'ed! Yay!)

Did anyone ever figure out why a lot of PlayStation one discs would play in cd players? I tried it in a ton of different cd players over the years and sure enough a lot of them still play even though it's a game.

This is because the audio on ps1 games and old pc games was often stored in the form of regular cd audio tracks next to an additional track that had the data. If you put that into an audio player, it simply ignores the data track. In some cases, it doesn't ignore it, but it still knows to play it silent instead of playing "noise"

You missed Flexplay! It's as dead as DIVX, and even a bit funnier (I think). I bought my first CD player in 1984 and remember that "Digital Domain" CD. I never owned it but a magazine review commented on track 29, "Noise Floor Test, All Bits at 0," since it was remarkable for complete silence to come from your speakers (unless the stereo system was off) in those days of cassette hiss and LP crackle/rumble.

This is why u don't subscribe. I can't believe this is a video....use a pioneer cddc3556 player recorded plays every type of CD/DVD except for LD....if it fits it plays u update software not a Cuisinart

I find this video disappointing, and it's because I expected you were reading the bottom of the discs with a super high-res camera and actually reading in the data that way.
