The aesthetics outside with the rain effect and ground reflection is beautiful, that look like the strongest part of the presentation

He did mention the HL2 beta as inspiration, so I get why you thought about the AI being simple by comparisson. The thing is you said the AI should take cover but there seems to be nothing in the levels for the characters to take cover behind other than running away around a corner. I think the level designs look far more like the earlier FPS shooters, Doom and Castle Wolfenstein, hence why the AI also feel simplistic by comparison.

If the subscriber reads this, here's what I have to say, personally, from the video: 1) Please don't make it inf ammo. It ruins gameplay flow and juist kind of makes it more of... Serious Sam like with cheats. 2) as radhaz said, AI Nodes, or generally better AI behaviour. Doesn't need to be the next FEAR 1, but it also would be better if it was more in style of quake/half life. 3) Lumen shouldn't be on by default. Just my 2 cents, cuz it can thrash your PC. Hope to see this game become a big hit! :D

There is a way to do infinite ammo and that's when certain guns are strong only for certain enemies and weak for others - this teaches the player to switch depending on the enemy type. But I'd encourage you reconsider it altogether. I like the graphics like textures and stuff, they look cool! :)

Imo the projectile bullets are not a bad thing, after all hitscan enemies tend to be annoying in games, what I would suggest is making the projectile bullets faster, but at the same time you run into the whole issue of designing shooting in games; do you go for a cover based system? If you don’t, it’s likely even your most skilled player won’t be able to do a no-damage run so it feels like the game doesn’t reward their skill. Though I feel the player should also get projectile bullets to make it a bit more fair. As for the unlimited ammo, yeah I feel going for the Ultrakill route of not having limited ammo only works if the weapons are all scaled in a way each one of them is good and you don’t have an end all be all. That aside I’d suggest giving the weapon sprites some lightning because you can barely see them. Also the “minimalist” approach kinda feels like an excuse to not add detail to the maps, especially when the visuals are anything but minimalist, I mean, it’s UE5 so you aren’t tricking anyone. I believe you can do the flashlight segment like this game does and execute well, but I’m not sure a claustrophobic maze is the right place to use that gimmick. And as for the enemy models being too detailed. I’m not exactly sure what style the game is going for, is it going for sprites on a heavily post-processed 3D game? Then why aren’t the enemies sprites? Is the world and enemies meant to be detailed but not the viewmodels as they’re just sprites, is that it? Very confusing, but unique.

This is my favourite background music by far! It contains that rad energy while also being immensely dark and gritty. It's great, and fits the video very well. Never heard about this game, but I love how it looks and I'm excited to check it out myself.

I have to put a counter point to the infinite ammo bit, in a game as fast paced and insane as Ultrakill having infinite ammo and multiple weapons allows you to focus more on the fights and staying alive as opposed to worrying about ammo. infinite ammo for every weapon works when the game is basically Devil May Cry but an FPS, much like Ultrakill, while in this game having infinite ammo does seem a bit pointless at the moment but saying that infinite ammo defeats the purpose of having multiple weapons entirely really depends on the game and its style. In like Halo CE yeah having infinite ammo would kind of mean you never actually try any other gun in place of the Magnum (Best Weapons in CE are the Magnum, Plasma Pistol, and Shotgun, don't @ me, I am right.) since it's so good but having infinite ammo but with cooldowns for your weapons like in Ultrakill means you don't have to worry about running out and can afford to cycle weapons constantly because every weapon is viable and every weapon has a niche it is good at.

This game reminds me of Unloved (the one on Steam and paid), which was once a Doom 2 mod. That game is also very dork and griddy.

Not a fan of infinite ammo, but I'm that type of guy that would still change weapons even if there's infinite ammo, because I get bored of using that one weapon only.

I'm not familiar with UE but do know alot about unity and the way it works in unity is using NavMesh and path nodes are quite hard to do. What I'd do is add Radius spheres in areas on the map which detect the enemy and give it information about geometry and also multiple attack/walk animations.

to be honest most dark and gritty games where it's pitch black other than your flashlight, just increase the radius of the flashlight itself... it goes a long way. or add the slightest dim light into the level which at least helps define SOME of the level

my only suggestion is that if you're gonna go with 2d gun sprites, the game looks too detailed and "realistic" and it clashes with it

I must give feedback that few atmospheric setpiece areas aside level design is really lacking, even lack of props aside you could create interesting layouts forcing player to react differently than just run back and shoot, like make them run for cover ahead or etc, but here I saw nothing the like, and no verticality either. By which I imply encounters where you get to exploit or deal with vertical surfaces not just the presence of multiple floors. Like even if going for more surreal and irrational layouts for sake of uncomfortable and weird atmosphere or something, it's better to go for more elaborate and with setpieces integrated into experience , an average FPS gamer's mind is already used to intentional or unintentional maze corridors so this won't feel as disorienting and surreal as such environment irl, you'll just make everything feel monotone and unremarkable. Stuff like columns and insets is also nice, though I hope you make some vortigaunt-style enemies whose attacks hit hard but can be anticipated and avoided to fully exploit such parts of layout, then.

Not a huge fan of the artstyle, but the gameplay looks promising. I will say that outside area looked really nice, so as long as there's dome variety on the environments. Cultic was another game that won me over based on gameplay. This could be a similar situation.

I don't want to be rude to a fellow game dev but there's a lot of things I feel need to be improved on in this project. Firstly the levels look really empty. So many of the rooms look like big grey boxed with red lights in some of them. There's not much in the way of detail. I feel like there needs to be more to really set the games location. Right now I can't really tell where this title takes place. Is it in a factory? An office complex? A Wearhouse? Please add something to make it stand out more. Secondly the actual gameplay looks really basic. It mostly seems to just be running around and shooting guys. FPS games have a lot more they can include to make the combat feel more intense. Linking back to the first point slightly, why not add some cover or boxes for players to duck behind to avoid getting hit? Or perhaps include more enemy types that force the player to react differently. The dev mentioned Half Life 2's Beta as an influence. So think about how different enemy's in Half Life 2 behaved. You had melee enemy's like zombies and antlions which tried to get close to the player to attack. You had combine who fired at the player from a distance and threw grenades to force them to get to cover or run out of cover. You had snipers who you had to stealth up to, then throw a grenade to kill them. These are just a few examples of how combat can be made more interesting. If you really want to go the extra mile try adding enemy in fighting. Perhaps different factions fight outside of just attacking the player. This makes the world feel more alive and less like it's built around the player. If you're reading this dev, don't be disheartened. No one's game starts out perfect. Every game has problems and improvements over development. I really hope you keep working on this and produce a really good game. Thank you for reading if you made it this far.
