there is opportunity cost to playing roles you like substantially less than the others though. it makes sense if you enjoy them all roughly equally and have the time to do so. but there is a pretty big gulf between my enjoyment of tanking and my enjoyment of DPS/Healer.

my gameplay and gamesense changed drastically once i started leveling other classes like tank and healer when I spent most of msq as a summoner, things like, recognizing mechanics in new content I haven't done before, repositioning or prepping for things as I pay attention to the cast bar or my teammates party buffs and health, I was terrified of healing and now I find myself wanting to do extremes and savage content for fun once you get into a learning mindset. Although I now find myself more frustrated watching tanks when I heal because they don't rotate their mitigations or use it at all when they pull

I'd even argue there's merit in playing all 3 dps "roles" Range DPS lets you have a very lax time and can instead direct your focus to learning the fight Melee DPS is all about maintaining uptime so it's a step more difficult And casters need to both know the fight and how to stay relatively close to the boss for heals and buffs so playing the other roles really give you the feel of how to do both of them effectively

Oh gosh, one of my happiest early memories of this game was learning to heal after just playing r anged DPS all the way to the end of the latest patch (3.4 at the time). It gave me so much perspective on what healers go through, why it was important for me to stay close to the party, what a healer has to deal with if someone gets hit... And not only that, but having to multitask the way healers do taught me to actually be aware of what the other party members are doing. It stopped me from tunnel visioning! So heck yeah, play all the roles!!

I graduated from Sprout a couple months ago and one of the main things drilled into me by my Veteran friends since day one was YES you can be a bad DPS. Of course it made more sense the more I played but I'm glad I was taught things like that early on. Like even if I didn't get it at the time I kept their suggestions in mind (keep dots up, avoid DMG/do not rely on the healer healing specifically you, etc) so I formed decent habits before things clicked for me later on.

the biggest thing that helped me get over my fear of healing is just doing it. ask people near the end of dungeons if you're doing alright. if they say no, ask them what's up. if they say yes, move forward with the knowledge that you're doing a good job. another tip is, while levelling, to run dungeons multiple times until you feel comfortable with the mechanics. especially run the more difficult ones (aurum vale, thousand maws) to temper your healing ability. to any fearful would-be healers reading this, just go for it- you got this!

Back when I was maining MCH, I learned the "ranged DPS need to stay near healers" thing when a healer Rescued me over to them out of nowhere. It had never even occurred to me before that I should worry about my positioning beyond avoiding mechanics, but with that one Rescue it suddenly clicked. Now as a healer, it's just painful when the party decides to spread out for no good reason instead of staying nearby

I was doing this pretty much from the get go. I started with Thaumaturge, and got that up to 36 or so, unlocking Black Mage at 30, and then proceeded to level up Conjurer and Gladiator to nearly the same point, unlocking White Mage and Paladin along the way. Even though I main DPS with Black Mage, every single Trial and Raid I've done thus far has been as either a Healer, or a Tank. My Black Mage is lvl 54, White Mage is 54, and I have Gunbreaker at 61 now. Knowing everything that all roles are focused on helps to make sure you're making everyone's life easier, which in turn makes your life easier.

i think there's a massive difference between "played ____ enough to understand how it works" "enjoys playing ____, volunteers, and doesn't have to be goaded into doing it" if you'd asked "how many roles have you played enough to understand the basics of how they work?" i would have answered "3" instead of "2', as I very much agree that even just dipping your toe in is super valuable. But realistically, I have not play tank in any meaningful way since proving to myself that i understood it well enough to feel confident that i enjoy it substantially less.

Now my struggle is to not be greedy in trying to sneak a dps spell too much before needing to heal. I also love your guides as they're very simple, explicit and to the point with how you explain the progression from 1 to 80. Keep up the good work. I’m technically a healer main, and have slight tanking anxiety too. I think it stems from the fact that I don’t always know when I should be doing what as a tank during a boss fight, especially since I’ve ran most content once while progressing MSQ. I’m ok with running a specific dungeon after recapping on the boss mechanics. But doing roulette as a tank scares me cos I’m afraid of not knowing which attack is the tank buster/X mechanic, especially since I know that there’ll be people blindly following me as I do when playing non-tank roles.

i come from a background of high end WoW raiding, so the idea of playing 1 role is pretty common. yeah people multi class, but it’s mostly “yeah i play melee” “yeah i play a wizard” “yeah i tank” “yeah i heal”. if anyone ever completely swaps roles, it’s out of necessity like there being literally no good tanks to recruit. i haven’t touched any high end raiding content in FFXIV but with how the job system works, it seems very very easy to swap so long as you have time and patience.

This is the one game when I feel pride of playing healer/support. Most games I do supporting with buffs of cover (here with bard and Gunbreaker), I usually don't like just healing because it feels like a thankless job, you have to keep everybody alive but if that fails, whatever the reason, you'll get a bad look, it doesn't matter the cause. I main white mage here, when I duo heal i do the bursty heal and my partner my support, she helps me to cover my shortcomings or healing as well when I'm busy elsewhere, I feel like my heals matter and well.. It's well known how manu commendations we get as healers because healer. Yeah it's common here, that feels sweet to me, in other games I feel as a background character as a Healer. Here... I have my spotlight sometimes, LB3, wall to wall... I feel so important in any rol in wall to wall pulls, as tank I pray my healer knows what to do, as healer I feel as a hackerman or a demigod if I'm on Whm (HOLY +Assylum takes care bois) and as a dps... I feel like the others need me, they can't endure forever and they did this to give me the chance to make the biggest damage posible, a great favor guys that's my one job as dps, I feel fully useful no matter what I go. That's why I agree so much on every role is equally important, it's beautiful

When my partner started playing, I levelled WHM with her for fast dungeon queues. She occasionally stayed in AOEs as a Ninja because "it doesn't kill me and I have shade-shift/bloodbath so you don't even need to heal me." Then she tried playing healer herself and was initially extremely nervous about it. She was NOT happy when I deliberately stood in an AOE and parroted her own words back to her. Learnt her lesson though, hehe. She's since levelled all jobs to 80 and is a very good player. It's still fun to occasionally remind her of those days though.

I ended up finding, like he mentioned at the end, that I like it better than healing. I actually switched to tank in my static as we were looking for one. Easier to find a dps than a tank healer. I found this in ESO myself. I played dps exclusively for a long time, then when I started healing there was so much that helped with keeping up buffs and parse healing, as well as contributing to damage which is not innate to the role as it is with healing ff14. That in turn helped me be more aware of where I should be as dps to stay in all the buffs, and when I later started tanking, the learning curve was much smoother because I knew what I would want the pulls to look like in easier fights, and of course keeping up taunts and buffs/debuffs.

Words to live by. My first classes were Archer and Rogue, yet I only learned how to play them efficiently when I tried Tanking and saw strangers play them. Both actually stayed on my toes doing AoEs while I was pulling, and the Archer even stood in the middle of boss arenas in order to deal with adds from a distance while the Rogue played bodyguard for the healer. I thought my job as an Archer was to stay far from the danger puddles, but I realized then that no, it was the Tank's job to make sure the puddles were not pointed our way. My job as the Archer was to prevent unnecessary movement so that everyone else had an easier time. When you have a proactive Archer, the Tank doesn't have to deal with adds, which in turn makes the Rogue happy as they can keep backstabbing the boss. This in turn made me a more proactive healer, as I made sure to stay in front where I could apply DoTs as soon as the Tank got a hit in, which was ok because it didn't generate much enmity compared to eager healing. Which in turn made me want to use my mitigation more effectively as a Tank to allow the healer to deal more damage. Which in turn made me want to better support the Tank as a DPS...

Back when I first started playing this game a few months ago as an Arcanist I think I spent a pretty decent amount of my time looking at my hotbar keeping an eye on my cool downs and dots. But after completing 2.0 I decided to spread my roots a little and try out the other jobs and roles I can say, I’ve improved by quite a bit. For example, with Healer I’ve basically spent like 80% of my time looking up at the fight and my teammates health and that habit has managed to seep into my other jobs. Plus, trying out the other roles has been pretty fun, I might prefer playing as a Dragoon, which is now one of my main jobs, or summoner but it’s a rush when the tank pulls big and you’re trying to keep them alive as a healer, And I’ve noticed so much more about my teammates during fights.

Since i voted in that poll i've picked up White Mage, and since i now play all three roles to some extent i've found that while i understand much more about the healing role, i've also learned how i can tank(i main Paladin) more efficiently. In a way that i never would have learned otherwise, since most healers won't really be picking on the little things in df content. So i can say that i fully agree with pretty much everything you said in this video. I also found out that i actually like healing even though It has never appealed to me at all before i picked up White Mage on a whim. Funnily enough, before picking up FFXIV i never thought i would ever even think about approaching tanking or healing, but now i play each of them more than i play DPS. ive definitely always had this mindset about not even just FFXIV, but other mmos with the same tank healer dps archetype, and have always recommended any of my friends at least try some of the other roles for the exact reasons you mentioned here. as someone who has leveled every job to max, i can absolutely confirm that having played other jobs in different roles, and even different jobs from the same roles, gave me a lot more situational awareness and combat knowledge to understand all of what is happening from different points of view. i wouldnt be nearly as good at the game if i had only stuck to one thing, and i definitely would not have known the potential other jobs could have, or what they bring to the table in a party. one thing you said that i especially agree with was your comments about dps being responsible to kill things faster too. little do a surprising amount of people know, but greed is the best mitigation. when dps, and even tanks and healers, learn to properly greed for dps on fights, while still properly avoiding mechanics and staying alive, they output vastly more dps than someone that plays it safe. more dps from them means enemies die faster. enemies dying faster means less damage outputted on the tank or even the party as a whole with raidwides, stack markers, etc. less damage outputted means less struggle for healer. thus greed is, in fact, the best mitigation. sure playing it safe is good if youre progging a new fight, and still learning mechs, but once you know the fight better, you have absolutely no excuse to not be greeding until you die over and over and learn what your limits are on each fight. also, greed being the best mitigation is why holy on whm is such a stupidly useful tool in trash pulls. not only are you greeding with dps, your dps literally mitigates by stunning enemies, in other words it is the same as using two mitigations at the same time. its genuinely surprising just how many whm's i have seen at max level still not using holy spam at the beginning of a trash pull. as a whm that should 100% without a doubt be one of your first things to do. anyway, to end this rant, and for anyone still reading this, listen closely to wesk's words here because they can apply to not only just this game but any game with this same archetype. its videos like these why i continue watching wesk's content, because he very much knows what he is talking about and is truly helpful.

Me playing white mage before i started tanking allowed me to recognize that the big blue shining dome is a whm's are of effect heal. Thus when i tank i know to look out for that and stand inside the circle, this also made me look up what other beneficial party ground aoe's were so i would know when tanking if i should stand in them or have the mobs stand in them. Playing another job or role even in passing does so much to help you understand what party members are doing and what you can do to maximize synergy.

I’ve done this for so many different games, it’s honestly weird. Im trying to work on just doing what I find fun, not trying to justify reasons I think a certain class would be fine, but just what feels most satisfying to press. Its to learn the other roles - you hit it on the nail when you go on about why the tank is moving the boss that way, healers learning range dps for positional AoE heals. Very good guide but I think there is a slight caveat in saying the earlier dungeons are 'easier'. I've been in a few Haukke Manor etc runs where the tank has tried to wall-to-wall as much as possible, but in these instances there are very few tank cooldowns, healers only have one heal they can spam with no oh shit buttons, aoe dps skills are limited and quite often people at this point might have a weird hodgepodge of underlevelled gear. It's a perfect cocktail for wipes. You're right though, if people have played all the roles at that point, they'd be more aware of the limitations.

I think one of the reasons why people think tanks and healers are so important is because in a regular dungeon there’s only 1 tank and 1 healer while there’re 2 dps. So if either the tank or the healer dies during a boss or a large pull, the rest of the party will most likely share the same fate.

Some people are just rude to be rude while others are having a bad day and snap unintentionally. Pay no mind to random people who have a bad opinion of you because ultimately, they're there till the dungeon ends and then odds are you'll never see them again. My advice for getting better with heals is to literally start from Satasha, slap all the skills up to 15 on your bar and run it till you're comfy. After that, just progress through dungeons at your own pace and add skills as you go. It realllyyyyyy makes it a whole lot easier and will also help shake your healing anxiety a bit since you'll be starting small and odds are will run into a ton of new players too which makes learning any new class easier imo. XD Good luck on your healing endeavors!

This is actually very good advice and something im going to take into practice as of now i raid on phys ranged and plan to raid on healers and all dps categories. I never thought id be playing a healer or melee for that matter but when trying to heal a bit and play caster DPS i realize its pretty similar in how i have to pre-plan rather than just sit back all fight as phy ranged. the more i play/ learn new classes the better i feel im getting as a player since im actively looking out for things

I only started playing this game just over a month ago, but I've been playing MMO's for over fifteen years, and everything that is being mentioned is MMO 101 regarding PVE. People should play all classes to gather a better understanding of the trinity and what each role entails and certainly to gain a different perspective of any, and all encounters. Although, it appears this game isn't huge on PvP, but everything Wesk is mentioning also applies to that area as well, whether it's this game or other MMO's, but knowing how each class or foe functions can sometimes turn the tide in a PvP match. By knowing mechanics of all, or most classes, people would be surprised how much better, and how much more they will accomplish by not having tunnel vision. That's not to put pressure on people to play other roles if it doesn't interest them, but give it a shot, you might actually enjoy it. For new tanks, if you're unsure about an upcoming boss in a dungeon or a raid, do a quick read through before zoning in. The more you're prepared, the better you will do.

I started playing FFXIV as a tank, periodically taking up the dps role when a friend wanted to do tanking. After hundreds of hours I finally ended up picking up healing, and having a decent amount of fun doing it. Having played all archetypes, I ended up learning to see certain tells, noticing if a tank wanted to keep pulling as a healer, or if a healer felt uncomfortable with the size of the pulls as a tank or dps. It's easier to adapt to any given situation if you know more variables, and if you walk a little in each roles shoes you'll have an easier time picking up information, which you can then use to try to keep the situation from falling apart.

I tend to gravitate towards Tank and Healer. Part of it is that I like being able to more directly help the team outside of simply dealing damage (namely, keeping everyone else alive either by heals or by keeping enemy attention on myself) and partly because everyone else playing DPS almost all the time makes DPS queues long and Healer/Tank queues short. I do play some DPS, though. Mostly red mage, because I enjoy the crossover of melee and magic, and I still like having the added utility of being able to heal if things get really bad. And red mage Verraise can be extremely powerful. I am also trying to break out of the bad habit of not using Embolden enough. I also like the "gotta catch 'em all" aspect of Blue Mage as well, but Blue Mage is a limited job in XIV, sadly. I intend to eventually get EVERY class to the level cap, though. So I'll be playing everything sooner or later.

I agree. Learning all roles really expand my view on how the fight proceed and seeing my mistakes. I still think healing is harder to learn because I have to balance between healing and damaging. Usually I play a new instance with DPS/tank and try it with healer after I have confidence on handling the instance.

I usually don't do any damage as healer until I see what the tank can do. When the dungeon starts I tell the tank he is free to pull as much mobs as he dares. We wipe we wipe. At least we know our limits.

I think I answered 2? I play all 3 roles, but I am by far much less confident in my healing abilities than tanking or dps. I’m generally most comfortable on tank but I main dancer for savage as its a more forgiving role, I have flexed tank occasionally when my static needed one so I have tanked savage a bit and it isn’t as terrifying as first seeing. But in the context of casual content, just natural practice and knowing what your abilities do should be enough for most players to quickly become at least decent at the role. (Edit: It may be from playing it in savage and trying to help with healer checks and optimise healing to help healers dps, but dancer has helped get more of the same learning as healers when applied to phys ranged, aoe procs and dances have more limited range so you learn to stay close to the group, and the small range of healing waltz further emphasises this. It doesn’t matter enough in casual content though so again it may be me applying high end experiences into bad the wrong context)

I've been a healer my whole life, since playing WoW from 2006-2014, and giving FFXIV a proper try this year. I'm enjoying the way healers work in FFXIV, doing damage between healing and even getting in as close as the tank to do AoE damage in large pack mobs. I noticed the "adventurer in need" in the roulettes was tank a lot of the time, but I have bad tank anxiety, so I never wanted to try; I worry so much about keeping aggro/emity on everything, knowing boss mechanics, and even leading the party though the dungeon; I don't pay attention where I'm going as a healer, I just follow the group and haven't really learned the layout of dungeons. As experienced as a healer as I am, I would have a lot of fun when the tank does big pulls and I'm actually challenged to heal, but I would also feel pretty miffed when the tank was timid and progressed though the dungeon at a snails pace doing small pulls. A few times in the leveling roulette, I would get a tank so bad that they would not use their whole kit maintain emity, not have their emity generator on even when we tell them multiple times to turn it on, and not even pulling mobs off of allys who are clearly being attacked and calling out for help; these tanks would never speak either, and any amount of advice we gave seemingly went unheard. At this point, I thought "screw it, apparently the bar for good tanking is extremely low, as long as I maintain emity I'm good", and I tried tanking. It was nerve racking at first, but I started to have fun controlling the pace of the dungeon, just rushing though with a huge pull is a blast, and I learned so much! Not only did I learn how to tank better, but also I learned how to heal better; I changed the way I target mobs to make it easier to grab emity, but now I have an easier way to instantly switch targets as my healer to damage enimes and heal the tank. I have also learned more of the layout of dungeons and certain mechanics. I also learned that it's pretty annoying to pull mobs for the tank, and also just running right up ahead or along side the tank as they dive into a group of mobs is kinda annoying. I don't pull as a healer anymore, I'll still run ahead after we finish a group of mobs but I'll stop and wait at the next group for the tank to pull, just as a small sign that "I'm ready when you are". I haven't really learned anything as DPS, other than I don't need to be on top of the mobs as ranged DPS, and that I've given myself a pavlovian response to always keep an eye on everyone's health when in a party. Realizing, multiple times in a single run, that I don't have to heal or protect the other party members always makes me laugh.

I always appreciate hearing how much good dps matters in dungeon runs. I main healing and can't count how many times I've said to my tank buddy: "dps is slow. I'm running out of cooldowns." The worst is when he's pulled wall to wall and we realize one (or both) of the dps aren't using aoe. Good dps are a blessing in dungeon runs. Not just for speed running. But also just... makes healing so much nicer.

I do try all roles. I like Warrior, Scholar and Ninja a lot. I also ended up enjoying Dragoon even though everyone else like you plays it. I can see why people main Dragoon so much, because it was the poster boy for Heavensward. I really think Healers should get some respect. Scholar isn't great on DPS (I use Ruin 2 and Art of War a lot because they are fast casting) but if I need to throw up a shield before someone dies, that's great. I got frustrated early on because Tanks keep running into monsters and taking too much damage, but I need to understand that they might be Level 19 and not have a lot of defensive moves or are using vendor gear.

I think I accidentally learned the game the best way, I started out as a white mage because I usually don’t play support and I’ve heard a lot about the healers in this game being like supports from OW, so green dps Playing support taught me awareness and responsibility for my team Also because it was so simple learning ABC was pretty easy I played dps next ninja, I bigger jump in difficulty but I picked it up quick There were a lot of times when I played support the tank would miss an AD and the healer would take agro because heal enimity And usually the tank would pick up on it but playing dps I would try to be more aware of my support to make sure they weren’t getting murdered because the tank didn’t make sure to grab all the agro Also making sure I was in place for my positionals was different from support since I normally just make sure I’m in the center of my team, but it kept me on my toes depending on the boss/dungeon Then playing tank I chose Dark Knight, not as fast as ninja ofc but not as slow as WHM Having played all the classes making sure I had all the agro was important for trash pulls and from playing healer I knew to make sure and use my CD’s since I’ve had tanks blame me for them dying when I made sure to keep track of when they used their cd’s so I could save my big heal CD’s for the next pull without rampart and so on Also having played ninja I didn’t like when the boss had to move so much since it made it just a little harder but not like ninja has a lot of positionals anyway, but I made sure to angle the boss away and move the boss so that the rear was in a good place for the dps And the awareness from support would be good if I picked up paladin but it’s also good since I’m pretty quick on picking up extra ads that spawn on an instance I’m not familiar with. The biggest thing holding me back is all the buttons I’m not super familiar with everything yet since I just started but also playing 3 classes at level 50 and more barely 3 weeks into the game isn’t doing me any favors XD Love the videos keep them coming ❤

My favorite thing in any game is when someone tells me "Shut up stupid healer/support, you don't know how to play other roles." and I then swap roles around with someone, play that person's role, and out perform them so hard on an alt role that they rage harder while the rest of the group laughs silently. That or I just tell them, "Well I actually do know, I need to know how idiot dps/tanks are going to possibly screw this mechanic/boss up while being arrogant little dorks when they don't listen to the raid/group leader trying nicely to explain mechanics." Usually only do that though when they've been a dork for a while though. Just because I have a healing stick does not mean I won't shove it up an arrogant person's butt if they deserve it. XD

Another reason why I think everyone should at least consider leveling one healer: Few things are more memorable as the first time you perfectly time a small AOE heal to hit right as a stack-marker attack finishes. Damage? What's that, all I see is my entire party at 100%!
