All Abjurer party, Endless Counter spells! Magical BBEG's Beware XD
@Nathan_Talisien5 жыл бұрын
As one more often playing DM than character, I am much more likely to use that idea *against* the party, lol. In fact... I'm building to the final BBEG fight over the next few months, and since they haven't learned just who the BBEG is yet I think I'll use this- the wall combo, I mean, not an all-wizard group. I'm thinking a mixed-class, all-caster party. Two Abjurers for the Wall of Force and party buffs, a Pyromancer sorcerer for the Wall of Fire, two Grave Domain clerics for support to cancel crits/revive those who get downed, a Circle of Dreams druid for support/control, and a Celestial pact warlock for Sickening Radiance (and more heals.) All of those would be at level 11, and aside from the warlock they'd all be able to cast at least 1 Counterspell or Dispel Magic in the fight. I might include a couple Shield Guardians to add some physicality; they're only CR 7, so not that imposing, really just glorified meat shields. I know that sounds like a lot to throw at the players, but there are 8 people playing in this particular group (plus an animal companion and a pair of NPC's, if they all survive player shenanigans that long- there's been some close calls, lol!) and they're all level 12-13 now, and will be 14-16 by then. I kinda *have* to throw tougher fights at them... Doing mobs isn't really viable; even with smaller strong encounters it can be ten minutes or more between a player finishing one turn and starting their next one, running real mobs is just too slow to be much fun.

I know an idea for an all sorcerer party. Maybe they are the only magic users of the setting. The player characters are discovering their powers for the first time...
@dmingdad5 жыл бұрын
My D&D kids game uses the magic school trope and an all magic user PC party (Wizard, Sorcerer, and Warlock). The school has an exchange program with other schools, like the bard college, that allows for NPC, guest players, and multi-classing. Having the school as a base provides all kinds of benefits for both the DM and the players. We use a high magic setting with no restrictions on resurrection magic. I use the "waves" method of monsters to keep from overwhelming the PCs and TPK'ing the party. There have been a few close calls, but they have managed to pull the party through everything I have thrown at them so far. Many of the bad guys will run away and return in a hit-and-run recurring villain style of play as well. I thought I would have to pull my punches more than I do because of the armor class and HP issues, but that doesn't really happen. I just make sure that I avoid any one-shot-kill monsters to through at the party.

Part of what makes an all-Wizard party challenging is that, without _really_ tanky characters or _really_ potent healers, the party must change how they approach battles and adventuring in general. _Avoiding_ damage becomes all the more important, because the PCs can only take so much of it. Spells that obscure the battlefield become more important, like Fog Cloud, Darkness, and Silent Image. If they can't see you, they can't hit you. Of course, if a Wizard can't see _them,_ that's also a problem (then again, that's what Divination and Familiars are for). For that matter, such spells and others (like Invisibility, Disguise Self, Charm Person, Sleep, and many illusions) could be used to avoid fights altogether, allowing the party to seek better opportunities (like when most of the enemies go to sleep for the night). Divination spells and familiars are also good for scouting the area for this reason. When your PCs are squishy, battlefield control becomes vital. Walls of fire or force or water, Cloud of Daggers, Flame Sphere, can make moving in to attack perilous for the enemy. Ways to create choke points help this; if you've got time to prepare the battlefield, Mold Earth is great for this (and for digging pits that foes can be dropped into), as are various illusions. Even the humble Grease spell can heavily disrupt enemy action, when positioned correctly. What might get overlooked by any discussion of party composition is that deficiencies can potentially be overcome, for the right price. I'm talking *Hirelings.* Procure the services of some hardy Shield Bois, and suddenly the lack of dedicated tanks become less of an issue. It can even be a source of synergy, as the Transmutor uses buff spells to enhance the hirelings in combat. An Illusionist, meanwhile, can "bolster the ranks" of hireling fighters, making the party's forces appear larger and more formidable than they really are. The services of non-fighting hirelings can also be acquired; laborers can reorder the landscape to one's liking, while medics can serve to keep everyone alive (even if just with base use of healer's kits, un-augmented by the Healer feat).

One of my best 5e campaigns was an Eberron Campaign where each player was a Wizard working for the 12. Where each player had a research goal. The other main suggestion is to start at level 3 or 5. Having an expanded spell list really helps the party compensate for limitations.

Good video. I think I want to riff on The Dirty Dozen. Start with NPC cleric (Lee Marvin character). Take 6 wizard wannabes on death row. Offer a chance for a pardon. But you must complete this here quest (set across first 5 levels). At some point the cleric leader is removed ( think Gandalf at Moria). Play up the character flaws too and reward that with ample inspiration. Although this idea might work better with an all rogue party.

Halfling mark of healing? Turns a wizard into a healer instantly. Pretty cool combo. Still said there is no healer wizard yet, imho it the class that it makes one of the most sense for (of the classes that don't have it in their spelllist already), if you have magic powers in the real world, what would you prefer, being able to heal or casting fireball? Why did no wizard ever learn to heal? Even sorcerers and warlocks can heal, but still no D&D doctor. Outside of a halfling mark of healing that is (even that is limited).

An idea for a backstory and starting location. Think the monastery from Doctor strange. A place secluded high upon the mountains where monks wizards and sorcerers all trained in the perspective fields of study alongside each other. Their grandmasters.. archmage's and Master sorcerers would be responsible for both training their students and protecting the world from chaos! To get a sense of the people all d&d races are represented in your game in some form or another.. would be on this mountain. the most skillful and the outcasts of society! You're more likely to see races like tieflings.. aasimar and ginosi! mystics are there but not nearly as common as the above classes! there are also some Bard's.. paladins and clerics that make their home in the mountains. Straight up combat classes would hardly ever be seen except for when called on by the council to deal with a grave threat!! Warlocks are almost never part of the monastery with the exception of Fey and celestial pact warlocks! The party will be sent out to investigate a disturbance. It's believed to be some small anomaly it may be a few undead that needs to be cleaned up or something of that nature. But instead the party discovers a grande threat and are unable to reach their masters!! As Han Solo would say this is where the fun begins!
@mactireliath23565 жыл бұрын
Wyatt Perry Nice man. Being able to establish a good base of operation for the 1-5 levels, that also doubles as a world lore hub is great. After level 5, you’ll probably have to force them out into the larger world. Perhaps the threat you have encountered attacks to mountain stronghold, forcing the players into the world. Lots of options there
@wyattperry44845 жыл бұрын
@@mactireliath2356 yes after level five the party would be skilled enough take on larger threats!! The monastery would stop sending them on small missions like dealing with a handful of undead. And start sending them on missions of more importance. And again hindsight's 20/20 and things can always get out of hand. But in terms of Star wars level 1 through 4 would be considered Padawan. 5 through about 9 depending on the campaign would be considered a Jedi. And after that Jedi Knight and Jedi Master! And yes I'm using Star wars analogy for d&d. but I feel like that gives a good idea of how the world and their order views the party. And yes an order 66 scenario on the monastery could be fun to play out!! but depending on the game you're playing I probably wouldn't pull that quite at level five. Not unless you want them to feel like they're hunted down like in Jedi fallen order!!

@Natasel there is a line from the movie Incredibles. if everyone is super then nobody is. Swords.. guns and nuclear weapons are all Force multipliers. There are always crazy people in the world. Some are dangerous some are not. So yes anyone could cast fireball or similar magic and killl or injure someone. But a flurry of blows from three or four individuals stunning the assailant. Magic missile aimed his head. There's also conventional means of taking down someone who's crazy like tackling and pinning them to the ground. It would be like attacking a military installation in the 1960s. Yes. Not everyone is carrying rifles but everyone was trained and more likely than not carrying sidearms. In this scenario most assailants cannot get more than three or four shots off before they are taken down one way or another. insurance off does not mean targets hit or people killed. Unless they launch a full-scale assault or vastly over power their opponents. Then the risk would be minimum. Using the analogy of mass shootings majority of them are in gun-free civilian locations. Good reason why less risk.. slower reaction times and higher kill counts. Unless a civilian is able to do something in the first few moments we are left waiting for law enforcement to deal with the problem unfortunately they don't travel at speed of light. So in short although the dangers are different it would be far safer than many cities. of course knowing Murphy's law if something were to go wrong. it would most likely go horribly wrong. But this is also mitigated by the talent on site. so if someone opened a portal to some unknown location they are better equipped to deal with the threat.
@wyattperry44845 жыл бұрын
@Natasel nowadays select individuals are given exclusive guard duty. Meaning that are own base personnel that are trained for active combat are not allowed to carry guns. Which is why I use past tense when dealing with military installations. The point I'm trying to make is that nothing is perfectly safe. But some places are safer than others. Take for instance a more dangerous weapon one far older and more powerful. Politics. At first it sounds laughable but in truth far more insidious. Take the Nazi party before world war II. They really weren't that powerful and didn't launch much on the way of attacks. So why do we remember them? Because I want to see gane power they terrorized all of Europe and had the world fearing what they are capable of. They use subtle political maneuvering to cram as much power as possible. After world war 1 people were desperate and the Nazi party was their way out. But when they get finally gained power they use that power to grab more and more power!! Germany could have taking over numerous European countries and then stopped. But They overextended themselves and made too many enemies. So yes A fireball can kill a few people. but politics can both build up and rot down the foundation of everything they have built.
@wyattperry44845 жыл бұрын
@Natasel( Mace windu) you are on this council but we do not Grant you the rank of Master. (Anakin) what!! This is unfair!! how could you do this how can you be on the council and not be a master!!? 3 hours later Execute order number 66 Yes politics is everywhere. ever hear the tragedy of Darth plagueis the Wise? He became so powerful the only thing he feared was losing his power which eventually of course he did. Those who gain power are afraid to lose it. Those who find wisdom are afraid to lose it. Those who know love are afraid to lose it. And a machine that loses it's purpose will know fear.

i've been thinking of running an all wizard group for a while now, they'd probably all be part of some sort of mages guild so they would have access to guild houses around the world in the larger cities, mostly these guildhalls would be places to strike out from to investigate ruins and uncover secrets of forgotten ages, occasionally they would be sent out by the guild to deal with matters of magic for the surrounding town that the commoners have no knowledge of, that sort of thing, they would probably be wise to bring along some hirelings to act as bodyguards and porters and the like.

@numbug12345 жыл бұрын
Have you considered Mark of Healing Halfling from the Eberron books? Their additional spells all fall into the vague area of 'healing' spells, and they even get one free casting of Cure Wounds per day. As a bonus, not a single one of their spell options overlaps with the wizard, which is handy since they're not auto-learned.
@sharkwang15425 жыл бұрын
I won’t be able to watch this till I get out of work, but my first thoughts on the title are as follows. As a DM running this all wizard campaign, I would have my players do a sports style snake draft for the spells they want. Repeat the process every time they hit a new spell tier. Maybe even do the same for the wizard types. Maybe include the full spell list from the start, so there’s some strategy along the lines of “do I wanna have fireball when I hit level 5, or make sure I have shield from the start” . I mean if the party wasn’t down then obviously just let them do their thing. But the fact that they each had their own signature spells would be pretty rad, and could even be worked into setting.

A simple idea for a Necromancer wizard: they're a Halfing with the Mark of Healing. It rolls nicely with my personal headcanon about the various healing spells, like Cure Wounds and Healing Word, being 'White Necromancy'. You know, the good kind of manipulating life and death. That aside, it'll give you access to healing that's objectively better than the Aasimar; you know, because of more options than just a flat number once per short rest.

A while back tried starting a discussion in the Wizard forum on D&D Beyond, it involves the schools of magic. In particular, it's an attempt to talk about why certain schools of magic are more preferable with their spell lists. I noticed that over all the spellcasting classes Evocation has the largest pool of spells, so much so that that it has around double the combined spell list of the 3 schools that are basically tied for the smallest spell list. Divination, Illusion, and Necromancy all are tied for the smallest spell list, they all have the same number of pages worth of spells on D&D Beyond when you search by school of magic (last I checked, 2), while when searching by the same criteria, Evocation has six pages worth of spell, last I checked. I get it, combat-oriented spells are going to take priority because that is what is preferable over most of the player base, but that's no excuse for not working to expand the number of spells in schools of magic that are more lacking while leaving the more bloated schools of magic alone until the more lacking schools are bit more caught up in terms of spell options. I always feel like Divination and Necromancy Wizards are getting shafted because of the lack of spells in their chosen magic specialty, and the special features they get for their chosen schools of magic don't seem to really compensate for the immense lack of spells from their chosen disciplines. You can see my discussion, and the polls I put with it, here: www.dndbeyond.com/forums/class-forums/wizard/35333-why-do-the-spells-show-more-preference-for-certain#c3 Honestly, I'm a little disappointed that Nerdarchy, Taking 20, and some of the other D&D KZbin channels haven't talked about this sort of thing

I think the Bladesinger is the best "tank" wizard. Not in the conventional taking a lot of hits way, but with their AC. They can generate the highest AC in the game. A 16 in both Dex and Int results in a 19 AC before the shield spell. With 20 in both that reaches a 23, without magic items/feats/spells. My Bladesinger could hit a 32AC after shield. (Mage Armor 13+5)+(Int 5)+(Bracers of Defense 2)+(Haste Spell 2)+(Shield 5)=32AC

I’m playing in a campaign where we did this, but there’s only 3 players, I played just straight wizard, and there’s a wizard/rogue and we had a wizard/cleric who just died last session (rip) and we decided that since we all were wizards we all came from the same wizard school and it’s been a blast

I just started a campaign. I floated the idea if an all wizard or bard party. I had no idea how it would work. I just thought it would be fun to watch. In a lot of ways, it would be more natural. When I was a grunt, I hung out with grunts. As a cop, I generally worked with cops. Now as a lawyer, I hang out with lawyers. Just imagine an adventuring party today, a cop, a lawyer, a nurse, and a hacker. ... Okay, now that I write that it does sound like the latest version of NCIS.

Abjuration, war mage, and necro and conjurer cohorts frontline, diviner, evoker, and squishy middle, dwarven armor and blade singer in the back. Wizards are disgustingly versatile and polymorph is 150 free hitpoints.

I'm very, very surprised genasi were not mentioned in races, ESPECIALLY Fire Genasi, their skills are exactly what you want (intelligence and some constitution), dark vision, and built in fire resistance.

You could do a wizard school campaign without all wizards, just make sure all have some connection to the school. Another good one would be a master wizard calling together apprentices to investigate some looming threat.

I really liked the idea of sending the detention room out on a quest, like some arcane powered Breakfast Club. It's like "Headmaster, there's a problem. Should we send our brightest students to handle it?" "Hmmmm.....no. Who's in detention right now?"

One of the campaign ideas I've wanted to do is that of a wizard secret society. I'd called it "The Order of the Iron Ward", a group made by arcanists, with the intent of not just pooling resources to further their research, but to covertly defend the world from magic and to defend magic from the world. Their elders were around during the Burning Times - when a frightened populace tortured and burned folks as witches, whether they had spellcasting or not - and want to prevent that kind of backlash from happening again. They do it by secretly tracking down rogue spellcasters, seizing errant magic items, recruiting sorcerers whose powers erupted, collecting spellbooks, and otherwise working to mitigate problems or potential problems that could arise from the presence of magic. That the Order of the Iron Ward gets to keep all this magical swag for themselves, and either co-opt or kill random magic users, is why they're kind of a morally gray organization. Sure, they keep magic out of the hands of people who really shouldn't have it, but they also presume to be the arbiters for who should or should not have it. They'll save a spellcaster from persecution, but in a "join or die" way, at times. Part of any game where characters serve such a secret society is players having to make decisions about what they'll do in service of the Order's mission, and navigating internal politics. I imagined that such a game could have many different classes, so long as they 1) have some ties to the arcane (eldritch knights, arcane tricksters, even Arcana Domain Clerics), and 2) are nominally down with the Iron Ward cause. But, indeed, you could go full Wizard if you really wanted to.

At some point just as a joke you will have to cover what types of fitness or working out each class would do, some are obvious monk is martial arts training but some not so much how would a druid workout? yoga maybe?

Depends. If physical training in animal form works for the druids fitness i could see him become birds and wolves for the workout

@@Olav_Hansen I was just using druid as an example of one that would be harder to come up with, anyway its all meant in good fun. I see barbarians doing powerlifting/strongman and Paladins doing a classic bodybuilding routine, rogues maybe doing parkour or something like that. For me its fun to think about, I posted this topic in a roleplaying forum and they said my post was "fat shaming the gaming community" and banned me.
@Olav_Hansen5 жыл бұрын
@@ACarpenter89 lol. Those buthurt neckbeards were pretty self centered then. Wizards would probably do riddles (or read in their book), with fighter i get an image of legionary training (using wooden replicas of the real thing so they won't tire in battle stabbing a pole for accuracy training) even though each fighter has a fairly obvious training regime. Sorcerers would probably just fool around with magic trying to do a new trick, warlocks.... probably go suck their patrons genitals, rangers would probably do a bear grills without the pee drinking, clerics would get their physique mainly by helping others out with heavy tasks and bards just train by talking themselves into underwear.

All wizards makes for a great evil campaign. Just make them part of an evil cult! Could get into some fun base building especially with a bunch of wizards. Quests for ingredients for dark and maddening rituals, and having to clean up the mess of experiments gone awry! Not to mention the best part of oops all wizards. All the delectable spell sharing.
