Man did this strike a "chord." I spent ton of time learning just like Jim. Still do to some extent. But, I just retired and I am beginning a whole new journey where I will have the time to play a couple of hours every day. Its all about hearing the changes and understanding the function of every chord or interval. Thank god for music.

Wonderful stuff -- I learned sax, harmonica, banjo, and guitar from junior high to high school, and never did much with any one of them, I think BECAUSE I didn't have that wealth of musical knowledge Jim talked about. Now in my 60's I'm having a ton of fun on bass and ukulele, BECAUSE it's unlocking so many great songs I've heard through the decades (well, it feels like centuries, but you know :-) ).

During my early years of playing guitar I always asked for someone to teach me theory. All the way up until a couple years ago I’ve been seeking someone to teach me. Then I found Gracie T!! So thank you for starting me on the theory journey. Grateful for you ❤❤❤❤❤

Gracie I want to thank you for getting me through theory one. Your teaching style is clear and methodical. No professor I've had can explain music concepts as well as you! Please make more videos on theory. I've watched all of yours. I had my whole college class watching! I'm a pianist and love theory!

What a great interview. He's an interesting guy. I'm interested in learning how to play by ear more. I'm on the way, but not there yet.

Fantastic video post! Love this guy! Thank you Gracie! I learned to play guitar and sing about 9 yo by listening to the radio and 8 track tapes after dad taught me some chords. It came fast and easy for me to learn any song by just hearing them. Still can’t sight read but I can play along with any band or song playing, as I did all my life. Played in many bands in the southwest over the years and retired from playing live in 2015 thanks to arthritis. Blues, Rock, Jazz, Country, etc., I play and love all music. My twin still plays in a C&W group in Texas. But still play nearly every day, by learning new songs, or just play for fun.

Great interview. Gracie helped teach me music theory. And my piano teacher was impressed with my knowledge. Whiteboard magic.

This is how I learned to play the Uke, Banjo and Guitar. Totally by ear. I can't read music at all. Wish I could though.

The Circus Jig had a very Allman Brothers fingerpicking sound to it. Interesting.
