As a future teacher I love this idea of including games like chess and backgammon In curriculum! I grew up playing both games with my family and I still play them daily. Such a great way to get children to think more critically, not to mention fun!

Hi Guy - When I was an Apprentice cabinetmaker I made an Oak / Rosewood Chess board in a coffee table with a draw inside that housed all the pieces and if you took all the peaces out the last one allowed the draw to open further to allow NZ$10,000 to be stored

Amazing items, God bless, wonderful! In Bulgaria chess was not mandatory but really looked up as a national sport until 1990, then it became optional yet wiedley popular in schools. As you know though with the passing of time, things changed. My dad and grandpa used to be great in both backgammon and chess. You're completely right as always that everything connected to rationality is usually dealt with patterns. Backgamon is great as well, as it is the relative opposite of chess. Both ancient games, both creating and forming character and certain viewpoint. Me personally - never been good at both, but hey, there's time. On the 4 move checkmate, after the queen captures the pawn, the bishop next to the queen could block the bishop protecting the queen, BUT the bishop protecting the queen could capture the black bishop, and then its checkmate. Just letting you know. But besides that, GREAT video. I would enjoy more chess videos.

Definitely love the game :) I do have at least one more video that I will be doing after going through a few more boxes. I'd like to show you all the pieces and the board/set that we kept from my childhood. It's the wooden one I showed a few pieces of when I was showing my board game collection. I don't think we have all the pieces for it but it is a gem for us. It was bought in Italy in the 60's or 70's, traveled to Iran and then to Canada. That's how much we love it :)

Wow, great video. It's funny I purchased the exact same chess set used on eBay which was virtually brand new, except the black pieces were dark green to match the board. This was to replace a cheap board I was using when my teenage son and I played. My goal was to have a nice board to keep set up as you had, I find this will get you to play more often if the board is visible. It would be great if you did another video on moves and strategy. Another game I've been meaning to learn is go, have you ever played it? Thanks Chycho.

Thanks, Joe, love the board and love the game. As for more chess videos, since putting this out and cracking open the set I've actually started thinking about starting a chess series. It'll be a while though since I have to plan it out and right now I have a lot of my plate but it did get me excited, so for sure I'll do more in the future. As for Go, no I've never played. At some point though I would like to. Looks like it's a serious contender in terms of pattern recognition when compared to chess. By the way, may I ask how much the set cost you on ebay? I bet the shipping charges were insane, so heavy.

That's a great deal! Think I'll check out some chess sets on ebay and see what I find, the only downside is that shipping in Canada is very expensive. As for the probability video and the graphs, I do have a couple of them on my article on craps. It's a write-up I did a few years before making the video. Thanks for the love Kody, and welcome to my channel. As for chess strategies, there are way better people to learn chess from than me. I'm just a casual player who really likes the game. One day I do plan on delving deeper into it and when I do, I'll see what I can produce to share what I've learned. Chess and backgammon, which I'm way better at, are well worth mastering that's for sure.

I think I have to watch the checkmate sequences at least a second time to fully understand them :-) One interesting game-related article which I read recently is www.wired.com/2016/05/google-alpha-go-ai/ Lee Sedol, the grandmaster who lost to AlphaGo, is quoted by Wired in another piece with: "There is chess in the western world, but Go is incomparably more subtle and intellectual". (Of course he's not completely unbiased!) I like that the article on AlphaGo points out that AI superiority in "perfect information games" also plants a seed for human master players to become even better. So it's not all doom and gloom!

Raoh the Queen goes on the D-file, from whites perspective the fourth file from left, and from blacks persoective the 5th file from the left. Also, with a white square in the bottom right, the queens has to be on its own color square. Kind regards, a chess player :-)

For many different reasons, one of them, of course, being that the underlying rules for most games is mathematics. You also learn economics, politics, risk management, finance, strategy, diplomacy, etc... you could build an amazing curriculum centered on games, and one day i would love to slowly see this happen, if it's not out there already that is.

Your voice is very relaxing and this video is excellent ASMR, but the chess is very much not so. Why on EARTH would white play 1.e4 e5 .d3? Nothing is attacking that pawn yet! I was curious and checked it in my database. In its 900'000 recorded games that open with e4 e5, d3 was played less than 1400 times, and in those white almost always lost. It's a terrible move. And that's not even mentioning the fact that you're talking about the scholor's mate here. Someone would have to be essentially literally brand new to chess to not know that the f pawn is weak. Nobody gets mated that way. NOBODY. If you ever do want to play chess, you could always visit your local club. A great thing about chess is that players can be objectively rated numerically according to their skill using the ELO system. It's nice sometimes to know what one's skill level is and how much it improves over time. You could also play online. Millions of people do. I should just warn you that if you try cheeky shit like the scholor's mate you will: 1) piss people off and 2) lose every time, because playing the Queen out that early is almost an instant loss.
