Playing Difficult Violin Concertos on the Viola

I thought they all sounded cool on viola but my favorite was Bruch. The key of C minor added a whole new element of darkness to the piece which I loved!

I think that Tchaikovsky did not sound that well i thought the Mendelsohn blended in very well same with Korngold i really liked the playing good job.

Yes, the Bruch sounded like it was meant for the viola! Absolutely fantastic! Korngold was my second fave.

Love how much depth Tchaikovsky gains. The only one that loses on the viola is Sibelius imo. (The 2nd movement would be brilliant though. Could you do Halvorsen's violin concerto on the viola? I like it except there's too much e string. The violawould remedy that.

Although I''m normally not a fan of the Mendelssohn, it was just *chef's kiss* here. The Bruch and Korngold were also great- since I'm learning the Bruch, it was so interesting to see what a different approach you had to fingerings!

Beautiful! Good idea to see if any could be transposed and rearranged for orchestra. The orchestra arrangements could be hard, I guess -- the transposition for the solo part seems obvious, but transposition won't work for most of the orchestral instruments and would have to be reimagined.

I think the only ones that didn’t suit the Viola’s darker tones were the Tchaikovsky and Korngold. Bruch was great, took on o whole new dimension.

Try Barber's Violin Concerto. It's not the most virtuosic, but damn do I wish he wrote something significant for viola.

@@ViolaKing I love his first symphony as well. Check out Walton's Violin Concerto as well, or any of Vieuxtemps's 7 violin concertos, or any of the Rolla Viola Concertos. Some of my favorites.

I felt the dark character of Sibelius really suited the timbre of the viola, probably better than the violin. The Korngold and Bruch also worked well. To my ear, both Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn are much brighter sounding pieces, particularly the Mendelssohn and were not convincing on viola. Maybe this could be compensated with a combination of slightly less bow, a little more weight and slightly smaller, quicker vibrato sometimes (I don’t know- haven’t tried this out- maybe you can, it might add a little violin ‘zing’ to compensate for the key change?!)

I wish there were more concertos and similar for viola. I often times prefer them as the solo instrument. The higher register of the violin sometimes just isn't for me. I think the viola is actually my favourite of the string instruments. I don't understand why it is so underappreciated.
